  • The first step in successfully treating capsular contracture begins with carefully removing the complete capsule. This includes any free-floating silicone, which may have leaked from a ruptured implant.
The capsule is then sent to a microbiology lab, where DNA identification of bacteria is performed. This increases the ability to identify positive culture results compared with traditional cultures, which typically miss up to 50% of breast implant infections.
After removal of the implant and capsule, the breast cavity is then aggressively decontaminated with pulsed lavage antibiotic irrigation, which is essentially an antibacterial pressure wash designed to remove and minimize bacterial contamination of the tissue.
Once the implant and capsule have been removed an internal bra is created with biomaterial collagen sheeting that comes from the deep layer of the skin. The sheet helps resist contracture by providing a protective layer between the breast and the implant. It also breaks up the spherical nature of the capsule so it is less able to tighten down around the implant. This not only reduces the risk of infection, but it also helps support the implants after your own capsule has been removed to help keep your breasts in the ideal shape and position.
Finally, a drain is placed, and the surgical field is closed. The drain is necessary to avoid developing fluid around the new implant and sheet matrix, because collected fluids may harbor bacteria and prevent the implant from healing with a healthy, appropriate sized capsule. Oral antibiotics are also prescribed until the microbiology lab results are obtained.

Good to see the explant shift or choosing against implants. There is a lifetime of future surgeries ahead with breast implants that isn't discussed... aged implant exchanges, capsular contractures, weighted implant breast lifts, plus numbness, etc ... not to mention the serious BII health issues!!

What's the cost on using the sleeves for under your implant? I heard it was about 3000 each that's not even the cost of the surgery or the medicine that is required. So can you give me a ballpark figure? Would appreciate that

It varies based upon the size and type of graft used. $3000 is probably at the high end of the price range.

When you send out the sample, are you using PCR? If so, are there any studies showing better outcomes with this method?
