  • Our discussion focuses on the author's interpretation of the Sinai event, which he sees as a representation of the entire Old Covenant and Mosaic Law. He focuses on the ambiguity of the event (whose voice is it?) and on the extreme distance that separates God and man; God is inaccessible.
The author notes that Sinai can be touched (that is, it is physical and earthly), which for him means that it is superficial or external. It's also true that those who touch it die. In contrast, Zion is supernatural and reflects a more profound reality that Sinai (see Hebrews 11:3).
We also explore the mystery of Sinai and of Zion. Sinai is a mystery in the colloquial sense; it is a puzzling event that is obfuscated and frightening. Zion is a mystery in a theological sense; an external reality masks a more profound and deeper inner reality.
