    Maureen O'Hara is one of the great singing beauties. It's so sad that we only have a few recordings of her glorious voice.

    She would have been amazing in the film version of “The King and I” and was at the height of her beauty at that time.

      I agree.Because of Richard Rodgers and Yul Brynner blindness she didnt make The King and I.

    How lovely! So many of the stars of yesterday had wonderful singing voices. I think it is a skill that today's stars have no interest in acquiring.

    I can't believe it. O'hara singing admirably? I have never heard her sing before. A great stage voice. Wonderful. The same problem with Ava Gardner in "Showboat"? Really a great loss for everyone in both cases.

      She actually did star in a Broadway musical, "Christine," which was a flop, but you can still find the original cast CD on Amazon, as well as two vocal albums she did for RCA and Columbia.

    She desperately wanted to play Anna in the film of THE KING & I but Oscar Hammerstein wouldn't seriously consider her because of the "pirate movies" she'd made in the past. Such a shame.

      +ttsheldy I never thought of her for THE KING AND I and now that I read your entry, I totally get it. She would have been fantastic. Imagine her voice singing that beautiful score. (Don't get me wrong - I love Deborah/Marni - but Maureen could have done it ALL.)

      +Star Sky her broadway show "Christine" was a "King and I " of sorts....a rip-off some said...some nice songs but the book was a mess, not a funny mess but a dull one...she was indeed a far better singer than most Hollywood icons that essayed Broadway but lovely as the songs for the King and I are it is essentially the great book that carries it off, the original production starred two very mediocre singers(lawrence and Brynner) but they had wonderful material to work their highly polished showbizz skills on...Maureen had neither.

      O'Hara was actually cast by 20th Fox for "The King and I," but it was Richard Rodgers who said "I won't have that pirate queen as our Anna".

      Yes,they wanted her because they knew that she woul dhave been excellent as actress and singer.it was a pity that she didnt make the film...Later Rodgers listen her singing one of his songs and saw his mistake and called het for the Lincoln Center revival but Maureen was making a movie and Rise Stevens played the role;

    She could made my fair lady. Eliza isn’t necessarily much young

    • @aeichler
      @aeichler  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Fox had her scheduled for "The King and I," and could have easily sung that score, but Richard Rodgers said, "I won't have that pirate queen as our Anna." So Kerr was cast and dubbed by Marni Nixon (the singer who dubbed Audrey Hepburn in "My Fair Lady". As for your comment, yes, Eliza could have played a little older and her romance with Rex Harrison would have been more realistic. O'Hara would have been great as a cockney!

      As they didnt want Julie Andrews in the My Fair Lady movie they could have cast O Hara as Eliza with Rex Harrison and she would have sung her songs and better than Audrey as Eliza and I agree ahe would havr been a more fiery Anna and sang her songs too
