I have to comment because these have been really great. The funniest of all the set reviews you have done i can't wait for the rest of them, so glad that you put these on youtube!! Thanks !! :)
Your thoughts about Unleash are correct, btw. I think it was MaRo himself, who wrote the article talking about the origines of all the keywords, where it was stated that unleash at first forced an attack, but they felt the ability to block in the first turn nethertheless was out of flavor, so it was changed.. Love your review so far, keep it going!
@cheesecraftia- Dreadbore is a sorcery, not an instant. Dreadbore uses two mana one red one black, downfall uses 2 black 1 generic. There is a huge difference between the two - just because the ability text is the same doesn't mean they are the same card.
does ash zealot make it to constructed? i think lobber crew is great in edh and multiplayer platforms like two-headed giant. it helped me keep those centaur tokens at bay and ping the other team. it has potential to ping multiple times when you play hybrid or multicolored cards also, so that damage was just building up which helped me beat the other teams in two-headed giant.
I'm looking to get into mtg, but I'm not sure where to start or what to get. I tried a few years ago but never really got playing a lot. Now that I have transportation and can get to places, what do you suggest that I get? Duels of the Planeswalkers is not really something I'm too high on though.
at the end of the review (and every other one after this one) you guys should compile a list of all of the cards that you think are playable in constructed and limited. this would be greatly appreciated. thx
Rix Maadi Guildmage is exactaly what Rakdos wants in limited btw. It totally prevents your opponent from blocking all your unleash guys and it gets around regeneraters in the later game.
Carnival Hellsteed was a champ in my deck in the pre-release, when one hit the board, most of the time it was game over. i was Rakdos and i got 2 Carnival Hellsteeds and Rakdos. Unleash was good for me because if i did not attack, some people forgot about the unleash cost that was paid.
@Shade The Hedgehog Brad ment old ravnica "bounche lands" that added 2 mana to your mana pool but you had to retrun one land to your hand when you played one. "as big as the Karoos" - Karoos was on of those type of lands.
Cryptborn Horror basically won me my pre-release. I would swing with my Rakdos Cackler and Gore-House Chainwalker turn 3, do 5 damage and then play a 5/5 trampler. What I'm finding is that because "real" removal is fairly scarce in RTR limited, people don't like trading their guys for cheap unleashed creatures (or they can't because their guys are unleashed). He's a solid limited pick.
I feel like Cryptborn Horror is missing Flash and "by your opponent" was added in. Now how good would a flash trample gets x for how much life was lost(by any player) this turn?
I'm in love with the new Rakdos ever since he let me cast 2 Huntmasters on turn 5 after trampling over my opponent's turn 4 4/4. Rakdos starts the party, if any of his damage gets through, bomb creatures are getting dropped for next to no mana.
0:47:18 Well, I guess its depending on what you expect Ash Zealot's ability to do; yes, it hurts, but you get it *knowing* your opponents will be playing to avoid that hurt, such as with Zombie decks. Doing so takes out plenty of options, so I'm still in love with the ability (besides, you know, that aforementioned first strike and haste) With Ash Zealot and Elite Inquisitor, I see my R/W Humans having good sideboards versus graveyard/Zombie decks in the rotation.
if you play a planeswalker, then play another planeswalker thats the same person but a different card itself, (for example, you play ajani goldmane the ajani caller of the pride) will they kill each other like legendary creatures?
Rakdos Charms third ability got me a nice win in draft the other day. I was losing momentum with my rushdeck, and my opponent had two keyrunes that he had been turning into creatures as manasink, attacking against my unleashed creatures and lobber crew that he wanted to slip by. He was at 4 life and a round away from winning, when he activated his keyrunes i smacked Rakdos Charm down and pinged him with lobber crew. Then there was like a 10 seconds intense reading ;)
Ash Zealot is one of, if not THE, best two-drop Red has had ever. Yes, you should be running it in Constructed if you're playing Red, and it should be at 4. Especially with all the Zombie decks running around.
Rix Maadi Guildmage won me a pre-release tournament. People underestimate that -1/-1 ability it has and sometimes they forget about it all together, leading to easy kills.
hey mroangeguy you do know that the rakdos charm says that the creatures do the damage.. so if yours have life link.. or your opp. use infect or something like that it will trigger.. btw keep up the good work.
Both of those cards are very expensive so they can have more powerful effects at lower rarities. But a two mana instant at uncommon shouldn't kill planeswalkers.
The next core set will have some Kamigawa themed cards for the same reason the last had Alara themed cards: they had unused art in the basement somewhere.
goyf was in high demand because of legacy, extended and vintage, it just happened to be in standard. Anyways its just a vanilla beater and believe it or not, standard plays more removal than other formats
The flavor of Rakdos Lord of Riots is made by the second ability. Once you hurt them, you start a freaking riot by flooding the board with creatures. We all know riots start when somebody gets hurt. I dunno, it makes sense to me.
The thing with "Rakdos, Lord of Riots" is (at least in my humble opinion): You play a black RED deck. To be exact (and mostly for the sake of flavor), you play a Rakdos deck. How tough can it be to push at least one damage through in order to play him?
Just wanted to put it out there, cryptborn horror in my commander deck can be redicoulous. I had him up to a 9/9 on turn four. I understand he isn't the best, but you get it right, he is just broken.
It died in combat vs a creature that came back to the battlefield (undying, voice, doomed traveler), or could not attack profitably (or block with the counter) to begin with. At the time of the video the format had so many much stronger one drops that cackler just wasn't worth it.
Dying in combat is what all creatures do, not being able to attack profitably happens to all one drops, but you still want to play them for early aggression, just like when they were in the aggro zombie decks. There were better one drops, but either they were in different colours or the deck wanted 16 of them, like aggro zombies, at which point Cackler was included. The point I'm making is that Cackler ended up the most constructed played unleash creature, which Evan and Brad failed to predict. It's still being played in standard even now.
The only reason cackler gets played because 1) it is a one drop and 2) there aren't that many good one drops in the format. 42% of all the one drops in the format have seen constructed play. Why? Because aggressive decks need something to fill the on-drop slot. Foundry-street denizen sees play in constructed. Why? It costs one (red) mana. And what Brad says about caclöer is exactly why it is not that good. At that time there were a lot of one drops that didn't have to downside of losing to a 3/3 for nothing so saying he doesn't like it etc is a completely fine argument. Going back to these videos and pointing out these things is pointless. Some people feel the need to point out they didn't think balustrade spy was constructed viable. Of course it isnt as a 2/3 flyer for 4 with a random ability. The random ability it had made it viable in some fringe legacy combo deck? Fine, but no deck plays it for its power. They cannot foresee the future and how the format changes so putting them on the spot on something like a random one-drop that only ended up seeing play because the one-drops got substantially worse in the new standard environment than what it was at the time of its release. You should instead point out the 'actual' mishaps they did and didn't see the power of the text of a card.. like emissary! :)
Lobber crews amazing! 3 on the field tap deal 3 damage play a two mana cost black red spell 3 more damage do again there 9 damage in one turn, lobber crew has so many ways to hurt
All damage dealt by creatures in the Damage Resolves step is combat damage. Just because you cast a searing spear during combat does not make it deal combat damage.
Cryptborn actually is much better in numbers. Had a few matches where I had nothing but a keyrune on board. Swung with keyrune, made a 3/3, then next turn made a 6/6. Person had to scoop right then because it cut their deck to only their bomb being a good draw. It has done work for me so I do like it.
Selesnya is pretty good, but a proper Rakdos deck can almost guarantee 4-5 turn wins if left to its own devices. Azorius, Izzet, and Dimir are really the only guilds than can stop an early Rakdos onslaught. I went 10-0 at a RtR draft. A good early- game for Rakdos = you lose. However, Selesnya, if you let them set themselves up, can just get more and more and bigger and bigger creatures until you can't deal with them anymore. And then there's the counters, tokens, life gain, etc.
rakdos, lord of riots is a great card due to the fact that it's GUARANTEED to hit your opponent and get that damage done. but the best part is that when rakdos does get combat damage, you can summon monsters without cost based on the life the opponent lost. in other words, start a riot to end the game
I have to comment because these have been really great. The funniest of all the set reviews you have done i can't wait for the rest of them, so glad that you put these on youtube!! Thanks !! :)
The best one of all Magic Reviews here on TH-cam! Your show is really amazing, can't remember when I laughed so much about a TH-cam vid.
Your thoughts about Unleash are correct, btw. lol I love these reviews, these guys are so organically funny!
I feel like the noises that Evan makes are the best and should be the noises for a final boss in a Lego Videogame.
does ash zealot make it to constructed? i think lobber crew is great in edh and multiplayer platforms like two-headed giant. it helped me keep those centaur tokens at bay and ping the other team. it has potential to ping multiple times when you play hybrid or multicolored cards also, so that damage was just building up which helped me beat the other teams in two-headed giant.
Best duo on TH-cam

What should I replace for Deviant Glee and Shread Freak in my Rakdos deck??
Guttersnipe is great in two headed giant because it deals it to each opponent; so each "head" takes 2, for a total of 4 damage per instant/sorcery.

Thank you for the upload.
Yes!! Awesome sing along blog refrence
What about Auger spree'ing the blocker of splatter thug? works perfect!
I feel like Cryptborn Horror is missing Flash and "by your opponent" was added in.

OMFG. 6 minutes in and I love you already...
Rakdos Charms third ability got me a nice win in draft the other day.

Lord of Riots' second ability actually was supposed to be Rakdos' set mechanic (called Paincast) before they thought about Unleash ;)
I just bought a booster box and did a practice sealed deck and got golgari the unseen and Rakdos's return
@ 7:36 ya lifelink is sometimes a black ability but tpically only on vampires
What I learned most from my last draft: Guttersnipe + Unflinching Courage. It's a good thing ^_^
what cards are they talking about at 20:00? Karous? how do you spell it?
Rix Maadi Guildmage won me a pre-release tournament. People underestimate that -1/-1 ability it has and sometimes they forget about it all together, leading to easy kills.
what's the lands they are talking about at 19:36 ?
as big a the ... ?
hey mroangeguy you do know that the rakdos charm says that the creatures do the damage.. so if yours have life link.. or your opp. use infect or something like that it will trigger..

Brad's goblin guide moment was priceless lol 0_o
Why was this released before the Golgari/Black review???
You can redirect any type of damage you would deal to an opponent to a planeswalker they control.
Won a couple games during the prerelease just because of Chaos Imps...awesome in limited.
I went Azorius and I got Nightmare Horse foil in my first booster pack.
Not to mention, Rakdos lord of riots is amazing in limited as well.
Is it possible to call of Unleash? Thats confusing me....
goyf was in high demand because of legacy, extended and vintage, it just happened to be in standard. Anyways its just a vanilla beater and believe it or not, standard plays more removal than other formats
So are you two not doing Gatecrash?
The flavor of Rakdos Lord of Riots is made by the second ability. Once you hurt them, you start a freaking riot by flooding the board with creatures. We all know riots start when somebody gets hurt. I dunno, it makes sense to me.
Hours of entertainment. Thank you so much for these vids. Evan is awesome......oh yeah and that other guy is cool too *Trollface*
Ash Zealot, the flavour text should have read "Let me see you outsmart my mace, Snappy".
He's saying you can use the charm to insta- gib Vraska the second she uses her ultimate, unless she's built- up a TON.
No, sadly they don't re-review but usually they talk about the cards that will be affected when innistrad goes out.
What is the opening music?
Rakdos's second ability was the original keyword of the Rakdos Guild before it got changed to unleash.
Kamigawa Limited GP? That wouldn't be Detroit, would it? That was my first (and so far only) GP.
Is rakdos cackler good?
Actually playing Trading Post in a draw Life Gain deck with Serra's Avatar is freaking AMAZING!!!
I think its funny that you guys gave lobber crew a low limited rating and turns out, its pretty awsome.
The thing with "Rakdos, Lord of Riots" is (at least in my humble opinion):
You play a black RED deck. To be exact (and mostly for the sake of flavor), you play a Rakdos deck. How tough can it be to push at least one damage through in order to play him?
That is probably the most hilarious way to win a game ever.
Utvara Hellkite in a dragon deck with Whelps and Hatchlings, i got 68 dragons on the fieldby turn like 10 or 15
Just wanted to put it out there, cryptborn horror in my commander deck can be redicoulous. I had him up to a 9/9 on turn four. I understand he isn't the best, but you get it right, he is just broken.
Lol Rakdos Cackler is the one Unleash they put down, turns out to be the most widely constructed played...
You have to realize you got zero for oned a ton for playing cackler back when this video was released.
How does zero for one work? Also, I'm still including its play for all the time its been in standard, not just limited...
It died in combat vs a creature that came back to the battlefield (undying, voice, doomed traveler), or could not attack profitably (or block with the counter) to begin with. At the time of the video the format had so many much stronger one drops that cackler just wasn't worth it.

Goyf was heavily played in all formats including standard.
@Cryxboy
Cards like druids deliverance are really strong against Rakdos. They can stall amd improve board precense.
great idea
Hero's Downfall is basically dread bore but for one more mana.
Instant speed & mono black change it a lot.
Augur Spree: "YOURS IS THE DRILL THAT WILL BREAK THROUGH THE VAULT OF HEAVEN!!!"
Lobber crews amazing! 3 on the field tap deal 3 damage play a two mana cost black red spell 3 more damage do again there 9 damage in one turn, lobber crew has so many ways to hurt
With Skull rend in 2hg, it hits both players so they take 4 total, and both players will discard two...ALL the value.
Destroys only artifacts, doesn't it? That's not a problem for red. They can do that for one mana (Smelt) or two (Shatter etc.).
All damage dealt by creatures in the Damage Resolves step is combat damage. Just because you cast a searing spear during combat does not make it deal combat damage.
That's a specific weakness of red and black. They don't really have ways of dealing with enchantments.
(Concerning Crypborn Horror) "When you top deck it, *shivers* go....."
EPIC! xD
I use Splatter thug, Dread bore, or Spike jester
Rakdos is an amazing commander
Cryptborn Horror is so Awesome, how can you dislike him? he won me so much games
no D Demon?
in an aggro deck?
15:02 best seinfeld reference ever.
And then Rakdos Lord of Riots WITH Lobber Crew is just awesome.
There are 5 cards named festival in Magic... a long way to go for EDH :(
Lobber crew + Rakdos, Lord of riots =
I just realized, isn't rakdos return the exact opposite of shinxes revelation
if you do a little digging, you will find a couple different cards that can help deal with enchantments and artifacts
And then there's the counters, tokens, life gain, etc.
i had a hellkite at my pre release and i went 5 and 0
"GRRR....GETCHA"
-Evan Erwin
anyone else see what they did there with the Blood Crypt land (gangs and territory)
Thumbs up for BadHorse!!!
Havoc Festival actually won me two games in sealed.
rakdos, lord of riots is a great card due to the fact that it's GUARANTEED to hit your opponent and get that damage done. but the best part is that when rakdos does get combat damage, you can summon monsters without cost based on the life the opponent lost. in other words, start a riot to end the game
For some reason I still think Rakdos is good in a red/black aggro deck. A possible turn 4 6/6 flyer is rough
so good.
Cryptborn Horror is made for multiplayer. You earthquake for 3 in a 6 player game and then drop a 15/15 trample creature.
oohhh yeah!!!!
i have this deck but i added some cards and removed some
Sweet!
EVAN IS STILL BOLD!
people say selesnya is better in limited than rakdos black red agrro
thx i thought so too
