  • Gibraltar’s new Roman Catholic Bishop, Monsignor Carmel Zammit, was installed at a ceremony on Saturday at the Cathedral of St Mary the Crowned, a few weeks after his ordination in Malta.
In his homily, Bishop Zammit thanked all visiting clergy, dignitaries, and guests, and said being a bishop was not a promotion, but a call to serve. He said he was apprehensive about the challenges of his mission, adding his prayer was that he would not fall short of what God, the Church and the community all expect from him.
Bishop Zammit said Gibraltar, along with most other developed countries, was facing a “flood of secularisation”, adding his mission as a bishop would be to lead the community in its response to these challenges. Bishop Zammit argued that the Church has a role to play in society, and the freedom to express its views on important religious, social or cultural questions; adding this should not be considered as “inappropriate interference in the political sphere”. He added there is a place in the Church for all, and all are entitled to the same dignity and respect in society.
