Besides the fact that a lot of plastic has been recycled, I can't believe how beautiful the bench looks! Its colour is gorgeous and you didn't even have to paint it! I hope this type of furniture goes in fashion in the future. Awesome work guys!

@Dog 🐕 I call my local hazmat whenever I see one on the ground outside of a store or at a gas pump. I suggest everyone adopt the practice, one can never be too safe. 0.003% of the population is at risk, we should stop everything, just for 2 weeks.
Amazing, finding ways to re-use not only plastic waste but any kind of waste from food to even gadgets that are made from many different kind of materials but still be able to make something out of it is just amazing,
Man this is pretty innovative imagine all the park benches and cities we could build if we collected all the ocean plastic and melted it down. I really want to see a test comparing the strength of non steel mesh reinforced beams and reinforced beams.
I love sharing your channel because my community is big on recycling and you give so many of us so many great ideas on how to use plastic recycle waste that we know is not getting recycled properly by our government.

I like how you use normal woodworking tools to show how accessible this is for everyone but (and I imagine I'm not the first to suggest this) I wonder if some kind of hot wire cutter might be a lot less wasteful. That way you wouldn't have all the stray shavings to worry about.
It seems like a great idea, but without the proper commercial equipment to extrude this stuff, trying to do this at home it take you a year to make that bench might be great for playing around and experimenting, but anything other than small scale items you really need to build an extrusion device😍😍😍
@@sand3882 there are plenty of products made of plastic for outdoor use. Plenty of places have recycled plastic benches, very similar to these ones. Plastic composite decking is made to be outside for decades. Adding uv stabilizer is very common, and it almost negates the uv degradation issues.
@@littlejackalo5326 , thank you for responding to my question. I am aware that these recycled benches are all over the place. A lot of these are being made as "projects" for schools and groups. I don't imagine they all consider UV stabilizer, so my question was about how much they would degrade without any additives.

I had been thinking of trying to build an adirondack chair (named after the adirondack mountains in the northeast USA) out of hdpe, but after watching this video, I wonder if it would work.. I may still try one day.. Party on dudes!
Love the bench. A couple of comments. You could embed some rebar in the plastic to avoid snapping. And I wish we could see more of the pelletizing. How do they get rid of the metal nose strip? Or do they simply grind it and incorporate them into the pellets?
Inserting rebar could work. But it would also make the final product significantly harder to recycle in the future. Not sure how they remove the strip. There is no evidence of it in the plastic as it would damage our machines. Possibly using magnets during the shredding stage?

You both look like you're really enjoying it and, at the same time, giving great, simplified descriptions of the 'how'. I know nothing about these processes but can follow what you're saying easily. Fabulous result. Surely someone could take this further and make the benches commercially? There must be a demand for them from all sorts of places - hospital grounds for instance - that would close the circle nicely! Thanks!

YES! Can you imagine if a hospital saved it's daily plastic waste to have benches made! Think of all that plastic tubing, gloves, masks, even the bags everything is wrapped in. There could be benches Everywhere!!! Enough to share with libraries & schools!

I've seen this first hand, perfectly good equipment because of some management policy. Its an awful waste. How good would it be to have it recycled into something that can benefit the hospital.

@@88Timur88Bahmudov88 yes, but it's a vernacular use. "Wouldn't have" sounds like "wouldn't of" when you drop the "h" sound at the beginning of "have." The dropped initial H is pretty common, especially in England. Over time, the "of" and " 'ave" have become completely muddled, to the point where you'll hear some people say "woulda, coulda, shoulda" or "wouldn'ta, couldn'ta" etc. I've even seen it SPELLED "wudda" for "would have". English is a language that was left unattended in a park whilst the parents were otherwise occupied, left it's jacket and shoes, and came back with toys stolen from other children.
I foresee ocean trawlers using their nets to scoop up valuable waste plastic for projects like this. One day ocean plastic waste will be an endangered product. No more waste plastic in the ocean. Problem solved. Please keep up the good work and sell those benches to the city.
Watching the extrusion reminded me of a senior year university field trip to a place that produced high-density foam extrusions. As our group walked through one room, an alarm went off, and a couple guys ran in to saw off the stuck end and hope the foam would continue extruding instead of cooling in the pipe. All went well.
10:30 when you sat on it the bench bent. I could easily see this breaking on someone and would suggest adding one more bottom/ back support in the middle. Other that that I think this is great. I didn’t realize that about masks. I have pretty much used a reusable mask since the start of the pandemic but this is great. 😷 + ♻️ = 🪑
Yeah we did address this at the end. Individually the beams retain some flexibility but across the 5 slats, the weight is spread and it holds the combined 28 stone weight of the two of us with no hassle.
@@BrothersMake But when you both sit on it you each have around half your weight on the legs. If someone like myself who is 270 pounds or someone heavier sat on it alone in the middle, I can see it breaking. I do think a center support or even a third leg (so what if it looks weird, just reuses more plastic) would definitely be best. Also how is it gonna do standing up to the heat of the sun on really hot days?
@@bellydancingdog A slat connecting all the horizontal beams does help with this...even with the extra weight. PP is far more forgiving than timber, and the flex is just a natural poperty of the material. I know maybe a bad example (because they break) but plastic garden chairs gram for gram are a lot stronger than wooden ones.

I had no idea the disposable masks were made of plastic. Ive been using the same 2 cloth masks for 2 years now. They are still useless at preventing infection, but at least everyone feels safer looking at me? I wonder what you could build from a bunch of used cloth masks? A Parachute? Safety devices recycled into a giant safety device... I like it!

I just watched this video and was thinking of things to do like this. One idea I had was to make strips for chain link fences. You wouldn't have to buy them just make your own. Of course I only have a small amount of fencing so it wouldn't be so daunting.
I will suggest all countersunk screws little deeper inside and the top gap to be filled with waste materials. so that no screws or bolts will be visible. and will look like uniform single material bench.
Good job on the extrusion and build. Though I don't think it's a good idea to keep it in direct sunlight long term as the plastic will suffer from UV degradation. Unless of course you coated it with UV protection.

Those look like 2x4s. If you stood them upright could you build some walls? Project idea: tiny house or even something the size of a playhouse with these beams as vertical supports and flat sheets as the walls. Windows made with resin the same way with the lamp project.
I am in the prosthetics and orthotics field and we use a lot of plastic. Especially co poly and poly pro. Along with MPE. A lot of recycling places will not accept the the scraps from us.

I cut them up and use them as stuffing in throw pillows that I make for my home. Works great!
How is the lateral strength of the bench? I’d be inclined to add a cross bar to help stiffen the bench up a little.

It completely startled me to see those plastic boards come out of the mold with a woodgrain-like texture on the outsides. Who knew?

Would it have been viable to melt some plastic and cover the screw heads, to avoid any rust and provide a consistent blue finish? Just curious!
