In summary do not, do not become a truck driver is a total waste of time. Long hours up to 70 hours per week, stress, away from family for weeks on end. Is a lonely life with a lot of shady characters.
I have driven a semi for over 30 years, and I no longer wish to do so, but it brings home the bacon! We are in a generation that at uneducated for the position they hold. I don't need a high schooler calling me a STUPID truck driver and second, I have a college degree for some punk with a brain the size of a pea getting in my face.....NOT good. My boss was hiring during COVID-19 and got little to no bites and what he got was underqualified people. I am so sick of listing to grade schoolers saying, "We are conducting an internal investigation" Vs the State Police that have real investigators. They have Pre meetings of pre meetings, of meetings and have it catered at company expense, that is THIEFT.
Trucking is diverse. Blanket statements are ridiculous. Deregulation is a misnomer. We are now OVER REGULATED. The Federal Government is sabotaging the very best, the safest drivers, the Owner Operators. OOs have completely different needs from company drivers, yet are caught in the net. Hours of service are ridiculously over complicated. It's fine if a driver can only drive 11 hours in a 24 hour period, why not just simplify it to that? That's just one example. Interstates are now terrifying. To avoid the hours of service law, unscrupulous companies just put two drivers in the truck, neither experienced or well trained. The truck never stops. The drivers never really sleep. Foreigners dominate the industry. These guys drive with their eyes on their phones, so they stay in touch with their friends and families. It's truly terrifying.
Even if you are able to purchase a new truck you will need a good trailer then the brokers are not going to work with you because your authority is not old enough.
I knew a guy many years ago who went to a mega carrier driving school. He was there about a month. He said it was mostly classroom training on how to pass the class A written test. A large part of the training was preforming pre-trip inspections and about a day in total, broken up over a couple weeks, driving in the training facility yard. The testing examiner was an instructor from the same driving school. This all happened long before Biden showed up, so don't make this political. This is about deregulation and deep pockets of the mega carriers. Also, why show all the European stock video when talking about the US trucking industry. This makes me question the accuracy of this video even more.
The entire middle class is in a decline. This includes railway etc too. Will have super rich and super poor. The labouring person is in massive decline.
