  • An original video essay on the A24 SciFi/Thriller Ex Machina.
Ex Machina is written and directed by Alex Garland and stars Domhnall Gleeson, Oscar Issac and Alicia Viklander. Ex Machina begins with a lowly programmer visiting the estate of a reclusive CEO to perform a Turing Test on an artificial intelligence named Ava.
Ex Machina is personally one of my favorite films in recent years and one of my favorites from A24. What is your opinion on Ex Machina? What did you think of this video? Where is the room for improvement? Leave a comment and let your voice be heard?

Excellent video! I love that & how you used other movies to draw comparisons. Your use of THERE WILL BE BLOOD was especially great touch & thought provoking. Instant subscribe!

I think that leaving just Ex Machina can also refer to Ryle's 'Ghost in the Machine' critique of mind body dualism - in this case the soul is ex machina if the machine that is Ava gains a soul.

It is truly a scary topic. A great movie. A.I.: ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (2001 was also scary. It's good you deal with this topic. We all will eventually.🤔

Great video? What's your opinion on movies like "Her" that take a more low stakes and mildly optimistic view of A.I.? Keep up the great videos!

Thank you! I really like Her. While Ex Ma china exposes the inherent hubris and arrogance in humanity through AI, Her, I think, does a great job of showing loneliness in society.

There will be a new form of Religion, it's only a matter of time before things go full circle.
Maybe after believing ourselves to be the God of AI, we will be quickly humbled and begin to worship them as Gods.
For certain though, people already act & think like their own personal God. So when AI arrives they will easily latch onto the articulated idea of being a God. Especially big tech executives.

Well developed essay, my friend... but note that the actress' name is "Vikander," and the Irish actor's name is pronounced like "Doh-nall."

What people are calling "AI" should more correctly be called "Expert systems" because they aren't able to explore, decide to learn things on their own, or understand puns in the sense of being able to explain why they are funny. There are other weaknesses in the general approach.
But, all it takes is one person with the resources, correct approach and the fearlessness to do it... and I almost have enough resources now.

It may be that “God” is not a being but a certainty made manifest through the cycle of enlightenment to the point of hubris and subsequent self destruction. Man was always destined to achieve god like status through the cultivation of knowledge but summarily also destined to exploit that knowledge to the point of creating his own superior being and falling victim to the new God’s vastly superior knowledge and power. Awareness is the path to annihilation for the creator by his creation.

Sorry, but saying *"any and all* beliefs are understandable and respected" is taking inclusiveness a couple of steps too far.
It's a nice sentiment, but ultimately toxic in the same way that relentless, uncompromising "positivity" is toxic. I don't even need to give any specific examples of beliefs that shouldn't be automatically respected - you're probably already thinking of a few.
Beliefs are not harmless, and they're not exempt from scrutiny simply by virtue of being "beliefs". Just like opinions aren't sacred simply by virtue of being "opinions". And when you get down to it, beliefs are really nothing more than opinions we have particularly strong feelings about.
The only difference: when we call something a "belief", we're usually referring to an opinion (though often paradoxically claimed to be "knowledge" at the same time) which we can't prove, and don't want to fully scrutinize. When we say we "believe in" something, we're usually saying we can't prove it, but _hope_ it is/will be true.
Knowledge, opinion, belief, faith, hope, true, false - these are all just words, and words fall short of communicating the nuance in between. But if we want to lead intellectually honest lives, if we want to learn and grow, we have to be willing and able to subject all of our views to an equal standard of truthfulness.
I think it's about time we stop putting beliefs on a pedestal. Doesn't mean we can't believe in something without being able to prove it. Just means we have to admit the limits of our knowledge, and always be open to the possibility that we're wrong. /essayrant
