My husband’s name is Jim, so I love his hat. My mom’s older brother Jim, was a wonderful man, he looked Indigenous, but it’s our dark German heritage, my mom had hoped for a 2nd son to name Jim, but she didn’t have another biological son, she got two son-in-laws named Jim/James & our foster brother, another Jimmy, so my mother was very happy, our oldest sons middle name is Jim, same for our little grandson, I wanted Jim’s too. My uncles, my mom’s brothers were and are fantastic men.❤❤
This is the song that was playing on the Kent State University radio station when my father died. I was in school there in the 70s. All these years later and I always felt that Jimmy's amazing music was what Dad heard as he entered heaven, the next life, or whatever ultimate destiny may be next for us. I hope I cross that threshold with something this good playing.
@@kerryfranklin1841 I lived at Kent State and worked at Ray's and Mother's Junction, The Townehouse and The Deck and Walter's Cafe over about a seven year period. My dad was in the hospital in Akron and passed away while I was actually sitting next to the pool at Dale Terrace apartments when we got the call my dad had passed pretty suddenly. Jimmy Pepper just happen to be on the radio at that moment.
53 years later and I am still in love with this song...especially Jim's rendition on his album POW WOW....I swim in the cold waters of coney island during winter months.. afterwards as the wind dries me off I dance in a circle singing Witchi Tai To....thank you forever ever Jim Peoper!!!!
Heard this song on the movie Sleepers and looked it up. So interesting that Jimmy Pepper was such a great talent and I just found his music!! His music will last forever!!
Jim Pepper is one of the most inspirational musicians to have graced the planet: we are lucky to have encountered him. His voice on the horn is unique and completely his own. His story--also his own. The spirits he channels to share with us are a true gift and comparable to no other in the jazz idiom. Thank you to my special friends, both still on the planet and those departed who shared Pepper's wonderful gift with me. Jim...may your spirit live on!
Thank you for posting, We can never have enough Jim Pepper. May his spirit and the memory of his musicianship live on and on forever. What great song !
I love ❤ this song Hearing this song it is filled with warmth and joy.I never tired of hearing this song in all the versions I have heard.my favorite version is the one done by the jazz quartet Oregon. RIP JIM PEPPER,may your legacy live on.
Witchi tai tai, hemorah Hora nika, hora nika Hey nay, hey nay, noah Witchi tai tai, hemorah Hora nika, hora nika Hey nay, hey nay, noah Water spirit feeling Springing round my head Makes me feel glad That I'm not dead
Harvey Mcknight just came across this and i cant stop listening to it...it's definitely not my usual taste in music, so i was wondering...what's this song like, supposed to be about or mean? i figured i'd ask since you posted lyrics...just really curious since im so picky about music and its nothing like what i usuall like so much that i can listen to over and over
the english lyrics I know are "what a spirit spring is bringing round my head, makes me feel glad that I'm not dead..." which makes me think it's a celebration of life and the seasons. It's based on a Native American chant. Jim Pepper was Kaw and Creek, I believe. He first recorded this late 60s/early 70s. It was something of a staple on top-notch free-form FM stations like Boston's WBCN where I first heard it. Beautiful as all get-out isn't it? Definitive version I think on Pepper's album "Pepper's Pow Wow." Another great one by him in a similar vein: "Yana Ho."
I am so glad TH-cam’ algorithm definitely knows what type of music I love. I hadn’t heard this since I was a teenager, but I remember and have been singing it all week, this is just so beautiful, thank you, whoever posted this, few things make me cry but this does, in a soul cleansing way ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤I love sax and Jim’s Jazz fusion with Indigenous Music, wow I love this so much. Jim Pepper was one of the good ones. Oh so beautiful 😊👏👏👏👏✨

Just a lovely version of this song! Awesome piano solo by Amina Claudine Myers! This was a year before Jim Pepper died of Lymphoma. Nice sax solo on his song by Jim!
Good sax solo too. I remember when this song was played on underground FM in 1969, a short version was released as a single. th-cam.com/video/Sg9LT4qR_Dw/w-d-xo.html
I went to see the indie-rock band Pavement last night, and they closed with this wonderful song. I had never heard it before and am now listening to all the different versions. Its grieving vibes are so marked. Jim's intro on this one is especially remarkable. Thank you for this.
tears started flowing with that first triplet at 5:49, glasses completely fogged at around 6:31 and what he said -- what he said (manuel valcarcel), we're not dead !
Someone was asking about the meaning of this song, and amazingly enough I knew the answer for some reason. Mr. Pepper's grandfather taught him a peyote healing chant from the Native American church and he turned the chant into Witchi Tao To.
Thank you so much for sharing this remembrance friend. I have wondered for a long time and it is really important to acknowledge the sacred cultural roots of this song. Thank you so much and many blessings
Thanks for your sharing my friend..It makes me re-thinking again about my musical approach...great song..great man...great music....Rest in Peace Jim...
