I have just discovered that I love owls. It has always been a special treat to see one, but I've just lately observed their personalities. Such fascinating birds of prey!
We lived in North Western Ontario as a kid and there was a Snowy Owl that would hang out around our home..we could put out some live Mice in a large crockery bowl and he or she would come in and take off with it and would just perch it" self on the power pole until we trapped a few more in our Minnow trap.
I understand your attraction to these glorious birds, Hasd! It is best for them to be free and wild:-) We are fortunate that some raptors visit our conservation center with a highly skilled teacher. Sometimes injured animals that have and rehabilitated cannot be released back into the wild as they are left with injuries that will not allow survival. Some Ambassador animals have been bred to work with humans helping to educate the public.
On the TV show "Paranormal Caught on Camera" this past Sunday, a man was freaked out by a screeching creature on his roof. He was indicating it was some kind of alien. I yelled at the TV, "It is a snowy owl!" The man tried to climb up to the roof in the dark and startled himself when he caught sight of the "creature" and dropped his camera. He claims he had to move because of this scary alien. I just laughed and laughed.
Unless I am mistaken, most Owls nest up in the trees for safety, but Snowies just nest right out in the middle of the tundra. No fear at all of any threats, it seems!
In Prior lake minnesota I spoke to guy that claims he saw a Snowy white owl resting in a tree.. Its 300 miles from canada. Very unlikely but we are watching and reporting to the Audobaun society.
