  • What is BLHeli_S? What's the difference between BLHeli_S and BLHeli? Is BLHeli 16.x the same as BLHeli? Can you flash BLHeli_S to your BLHeli ESCs? Does BLHeli support multishot or oneshot42? Why can't you adjust damped light on your BLHeli ESCs? Is BLHeli_S really better than BLHeli? Have you ever said a word so many times that it lost all meaning? BLHeli BLHeli BLHeli BLHeli BLHeli?

    Is it possible to flash an older version of BlHeli on a BlHeli_S ESC as I really need some features of the old BlHeliSuite?
    If not, is there and advanced mode on the BlHeli_S Suite that can invert Input Polarity?
    Many Thanks
    Jonno

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      BLHeli_S ESCs cannot run older BLHeli firmware. It's not possible. If you don't see input polarity in BLHeli configurator, I don't think it's possible. BLHeli_S removed a few options to make life simpler for users. Maybe input polarity was one of them.

    Hey Joshua, is it ok after you calibrated in betaflight and go over to check the settings in BLHeli suite I have 4 esc load, 2 not synced with master. The values of 3 and 4 have different Max and min throttle. Is this going to cause any issues or is this just how it is? Thank you

  • @leecyrille
    @leecyrille 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    if you look at channel output on the taranis while you move the throttle you can see the indexing is not firm enough to limit you to the resolution of the clicks, although I agree there is more resolution than we can deliberately use.

    I think we actually are hitting the erpm limit on 5" props. I can't remember the technical details, but I've heard QMF say that BB1 can be limiting on some setups depending on motor type and motor update speed. Its something like erpm/poles. If running 2600kv 5x4x3 and 16k update you will have upper rpm issues.
    I hit the limit on an xm20a trying to run 16k. When I go max throttle the topend speed drops off fast.

    Joshua. I'm got pleasantly suprize and I think this is something you'd like to know. I went ahead and got the runcam swift and to my suprize, unlike my last one, this runcam swift had the piece of foam behind the plate on the camera and the whole front of the board is epoxied so the crystal and light sensor don't break off. these are the things that make me happy.

    g'day Joshua, thanks for the video. So not just blheli suite but in betaflight config, we also treat them the same, like min throttle etc. And do blheli_s benefit from top end calibration? cheers

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      BLHeli and BLHEli_S both have improvements to the throttle calibration routine, but I still calibrate manually just because I like to. That being said, when I am in a hurry, I have used Motors Tab calibration and not had any problems.

    I used to use blheli multi firmware for my 250 gram single rotor direct drive copter. Now the demped light is trying to actively brake my main rotor and the motors get really hot, and I dont have the option to turn it off. Also blheli_s removes PIDs governor from the esc. It is useless for single rotor or big prop variable pitch projects. Wish I had watched this episode of yours before I bought the Es .

    Commonly Bleheli_S is disussed for Racer. I have another aim: I want to drive 22-Pole Pancakes with stable MINTHROTTLE as low as possible - just because I like it very much starting up 17" Props really slow (saw this several YEARS ago with Mikrokopter really smooth).
    Do you think Blheli_S has advantages driving high-pole-low-KV(390)@low Speed?

  • @BumpierDrake960
    @BumpierDrake960 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Biggest difference I noticed with BL -heliS, I can run my min throttle much lower without risking Dsynch issues. This allows better inverted hang time with slower turning props. Also I no longer have to have 2 PID profiles for when Ai run with or eithout a GoPro...I love it and to me, totally worth the upgrade to S!

      There is no OS42 build of regular BLHeli as far as I know. You can have BLHeli with PWM/OS125, or you can flash the MS firmware and get BLHeli with MS. Not sure if the MS firmware also supports PWM.

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Jack Truong the name indicates the FET layout and dead time. Many ESC's share layout so instead of using the ESC name, blheli switched to a name that is descriptive of the layout.

    I'd also add that I can clearly tell the difference between blheli and blheli S and I can't tune well at all. I'm totally sold on Blheli S, even on a cheap setup they make it so much smoother and feel like twice the resolution. I just don't feel this feeling is down to how well you can tune a quad, more on throttle stick finesse which is pilot skill.

    Are any ESC able to damped light, considering that they have FETS? Or do some ESCs have an alternative to FETs to handle damped light?

    • @mrlazda
      @mrlazda 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      In theory any ESC can do regenerative braking, it have nothing to do with FETs (MOSFETs) it is due control scheme how pass element (FETs) are driven (and in case of FET from FET driver).

    • @octapc
      @octapc 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joshua stated that FETs can't switch fast enough, or did I miss hear him?

    • @remotecontrolaholic
      @remotecontrolaholic 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      All ESCs have FETs, the question is how fast these FETs can switch.

    • @mrlazda
      @mrlazda 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nicholas Heidl
      Speed of MOSFET switching is limited mostly by MOSFET driver.
      In theory you can make regenerative braking on even slowest switching MOSFET, but you then you will limit PWM frequency, which will in end have pure resolution ...
      There are some ESC that drive MOSFET directly from MCU, MCU have limited sink/source current on output pins (more 50 times less then worst dedicated MOSFET drivers, and 500-1000 times less then modern one), which limit speed of switching (turn on/off time is inversely proportional to driving current) and for PWM speed that are used for ESC there is "impossible" to do regenerative braking.

    • @octapc
      @octapc 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you know where I could look to find out?
      Can I flash Bl-heli on a BL-heli S esc?
      Thanks a bunch for responding :D
      It's been pretty tough to find real information and this channel is great.

    • @brandonr49
      @brandonr49 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Especially because the RPM power protect setting still exists. That means the ESC is still aware of the RPM on the motor. So the loop could be closed.

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you were to dig into BLHeli_S's assembly code, you could potentially write your own closed-loop mode. That would be beyond the skills of even most coders.

    • @brandonr49
      @brandonr49 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm definitely not qualified to do that. Just wondering about backwards compatibility with BLHeli. If I can change from BLHeli_S back to BLHeli I should have closed loop back, I'll just lose out on some of the newer code changes.

      Did you check the bolts with a multimeter, or visually? Only a multimeter can really tell. Check for continuity between the ESC output pads and the motor screws. Check every pad and every screw together.
      Other things that can cause one motor to get hot: bad bearing, out of balance bell or shaft.

    I just built a mini tri-copter from rcexplorers.se and it came with the Emax 2205 KV2300 motors and Aikon SEFM 30A ESC's. I seem to be having sink issues unless the fact that i'm running the motors without any props is the problem. I kind of doubt it but you tell me. I have the latest version of BL Heli Suite and when trying to use Silabls Cleanflight passthrough it works great up to the point where I click the "Check" button. And then the ESC goes kind of crazy. sounds like they are starting the calibration process and the rear tail motors spins in a real jerky fashion. The ESC never stops and goes on and on with a series of double beeps. then BL Heli times out with an error 31 or an error 121. Like I said...it works fine when I first plug it in. It sees the three ESC's and when I plug in the battery i get the three beeps. But when I click the "Check" button the blue circle just spins and the ESC beeps are not anything like yoru video shows. I have the lastest version of Cleanflight that you can get. I use the one that is an app on Google Chrome. I'm also using a Spektrum DX18 with an AR7700 using SRXL / Spektrum 2048. I'd appreciate any advise you could give.

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you hit "check" and the ESC does anything at all, it's not in programming mode. It's not detecting the programming signal from the board, and it's mis-interpreting it as throttle signal or something. I don't know what the fix is though.

      Those are the different models of ESC, which require different firmware builds because they have different types of FET and different physical layout.

    i have the racestar 4in1 20amp. i flashed it with 16.3 and did one flight. changed the stand off to shorter one and now i lost one esc. blheli isnt seeing it.
    fast fwd 3 days later trying to get the one esc to connect blheli osnt seeing any esc. how do i reflash these. everyrime i try it ask to cycle esc power.. no matter how many times i try nothing happens.

      Does the ESC actually work? Like does it spin the motors?

    • @Batitoh
      @Batitoh 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes just 3. if blheli sees it i can flash and what not. takes like 30 tries to have blheli even see it

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm sorry I still don't understand the answer. Does the ESC work? When you said "just 3" I'm not sure what you meant. Only 3 ESCs spin, or only ESC 3 spins, or what?

    • @Batitoh
      @Batitoh 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes esc still work and it can spin the motors, but one 3 out of 4 will work.

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm sorry, but I'm still not clear.
      3 out of 4 ESCs work to spin the motors?
      4 out of 4 ESCss spin the motors, but only 3 out of 4 can be seen in BLHeliSuite?

    Unless it's maintained by the same developers, you should be very, very careful with claims that a fork obsoletes the upstream. Developers don't take too kindly on this kind of thing.
    It seems like it's just a hardware specific port of BLHeli to 8-bit SiLabs controllers. The reason such port would naturally have a reduced number of options is because of conservation of effort - some options no longer make sense on the new target platform. For example high-resolution hardware PWM deprecates Dither functionality. Performance conserving trade-offs may have also been obsoleted because they have little impact on the SiLabs platform while they may have had significant impact on AVR.
    Everything bound to exotic hardware doesn't have the best long term odds though, in my opinion. I think wind is blowing towards ARM Cortex M3 and M4 microcontrollers - they are cheap, power-frugal, and there are multiple competing sources for them. I think STM32 embedded peripherals are particularly attractive, but no big deal.

    hi Josh, the S stands for "smooth". Imho, the significant change is the one you mentioned, hardware PWM.

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree hardware PWM is huge. The additional memory is also nice. It's why we can have OS125, OS42, and MS in the same ESC now.

    another video with no audio! i know it may just be me, but this is so strange

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I really have no idea... There is literally no difference in my production process, and I've never had it happen myself.
      I don't want to risk getting another community guidelines strike by directing you to do anything in violation of TH-cam's TOS, so I don't suggest that you find any other way of watching the video, especially not as a strictly diagnostic tool, to see if the raw file has audio in it.

      Sorry Josh just frustrated getting BL Heli to read my esc. All the video's that explain BL heli and Beta flight are greatly appreciated but when things go wrong, and it seems common, then were SOL LOL. I tried updating the driver on my esc using zadig as explained on another you tube channel, not yours, and it failed and won't let me do anything at this point. The esc is this, pirofliprc.com/HGLRC-XJB-F428-TX20-Omnibus-F4-Flight-Controller-28A-2-4S-BlheliS-ESC-25100250mW-Switchable-VTX_p_4210.html

    Please stop calling "damped light" active braking it is regenerative braking, active braking is totally different technology.

    • @mrlazda
      @mrlazda 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Goat
      Simple NO.
      Active braking is not category of braking, it is just one of methods of braking, same as regenerative braking or dynamic braking (...) in terminology of BLDC motor drive (and that terminology are in use long before they was used in RC applications and it is inherited from PMSM).
      Active braking is a method of braking obtained by reversing the applied supply voltage so that the input voltage assists the back emf in forcing armature current in reverse direction (sometimes also called "Plugging" and you can look at it simple as slamming motor in revers).
      On other hand regenerative braking is method of braking where power generated during retardation is fed back towards the source i.e., the motor works as a generator developing a negative torque which opposes the motion and the generated energy is supplied to the source (contrary to dynamic braking where power is wasted in some resistance on heat).
      Active braking is most efficient in terms of braking, but it use energy from source for braking, on other hand dynamic do not use energy from source or return energy to source during braking and regenerative braking return energy to source during braking, but dynamic and regenerative braking are less efficient in terms of braking.
      edit: Using your division (if something like that would be valid for BLDC) regenerative braking will be in passive braking category.
