    Honestly, if the knives they're counterfeiting are actually decent, I don't see why they wouldn't just put forth the effort and start their own knife company. If they're good enough to excel in looking like real name brand knives, they might excel in actually being a knife company.

      @HVKfps 9 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      SoimVan Probably easier to make a knockoff and sell it for people on budgets that want a certain high dollar knifes look vs making your own designs. The work is done for you because you already know what is sought after, just copy it and throw a lower price on it.

    Me. Personally. When I was younger, everything I owned was fake. LOL Until I grew up and realized something. That kind of represents you. As a person. If you are buying fake things and passing them off as the real thing. That shows what kind of character you're made of. Now buying something that's fake and admitting "Hey it's a fake but I loved the design and couldn't afford the real thing." That's a different story. But for me, personally, I don't buy them.

      I'd also like to add the, case of "Hey, it's fake, it's adequate, and I don't want to spend so much for the real thing"

    This is the reason I only buy from reputable dealers. Its crazy how close the fakes are to the real thing these days. If you didn't know what to look for most people wouldn't know the difference.

    One thing to keep in mind though, these knockoffs were supposed to be sold in China as alternatives because we do not have easy access to legit brands. Knife collecting in China is technically illegal. Though no body really cares including the police, it is still extremely hard to purchase any legit foreign brand knives(or extremely expensive. A real Spyderco PM2 costs around $200 in China, most of the extra was used to pay for the "shipping and handling"), yet the local demand is big, and that's where knockoffs come to play.

    • @mrjumbolegz6483
      @mrjumbolegz6483 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      So China churns out all these knives and they don't let their own people have them. This is why I buy USA stuff almost exclusively, when I can at least.

    The thing that really gives it away is the rounded edges on the handle. The squared corners is one of the first things I noticed when I got my PM2

  • @JulianZeezer
    @JulianZeezer 10 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    One good reason to buy authentic stuff is that it supports the people who advance the state of the art, rather than supporting people who just try to sponge off other peoples' innovation and branding. If knockoffs were all that people bought, nothing would ever improve. We'd still be using sharp rocks to cut things.

    One of the fastest ways to tell a fake is on the liners. If it's stonewashed, it's a fake. Spyderco only uses bead blasting on their liners.

  • @blanex1

    i think this is so said,for us people who love our spyderco's and are willing to pay the extra to get the real deal,there should be a law banning copy's made from china,i don't support it and will never willingly buy one! or even show a unboxing of one of them.

      It's one think cloning a design and calling it something else but out right copying the whole thing including the Manufacturer's name and etchings... This is outright stealing and robbing Spyderco!
      We should avoid at all cost giving these thieves a stage to market their stolen goods.

      Blane Biondolillo: there is, just like there is a law that soliciters can't call you on your phone. Or that criminals can't lock up you computer and charge you a random to unlock it. To stop the ransom ware on your computer, all they have to do is go after the banksters that channel your money to the crooks. But it never happens because our government is corrupt.

    I handled a fake Military at our local flea market.
    This one was $50. It was smallish like a Paramilitary.
    All of my Spydees deploy smoothly out of the box. The fake one had a sticky blade.
    The jimping was sloppy and the black paint was runny looking on the spine jimping and inside the pivot area. The lettering looked different and was stamped a little closer to the handle. The liner lock was made of a different looking material than the titanium on my Millie. The G-10 was a little cheaper looking, and a little more raised. Everything else was pretty convincing. At a quick glance it did look like a Para 2.

    Jeff, where are your pipe tobacco preferences, if any, leaning these days? Have you sort of zeroed in on a certain style, i.e., Englishes, Balkans, VAs, VaPers? (I'm basically a straight VA and VaPer smoker with an occasional bowl of Penzance or G.L. Pease Westminster).
    Hard to say anything about the materials used in that fake. Could shear, chip, bend easy. I guess it might make a good beater. Definitely let us know with a follow-up.
    Finally, I would really appreciate you letting me know what you think of the CASE blade steels, both CV and SS. Been thinking of collecting a few, but if it is nothing beyond the quality of, say, a rough rider, I may just stick with better blade steels. I use everything I buy, so performance always trumps looks or pedigree.

      Sometimes even the legit ones have laser etching errors like this. I've experienced this on both spyderco and benchmade. But I assure you it doesn't mean they are fake that depends on the blade finish and what not. But yes atrention to detail is important

    Hey jeff of all the youtubers, even nutn, you have been the most consistant on your channel. Everyone "takes a break" for a month or so, follows some tactical fad. Lookin back, you have grown (and shrunk) and changed, but are still true to your core. Always a gentleman and really cool. Keep up the amazing work. You are a man of many hobbies and i think that makes for a cool dude and youtuber. Iv prob learned more from you than i did in high school lol. Mostly because we where probably very similar in that fashion cheech!
    As for the knife imediately i noticed the handle didnt have satin liners poping out. And on the real pm2 isnt the lanyard holl through the pocket clip? Also can you carry that for a bit and see if it takes an edge. If it does and the action can be KINDA worked in i would def buy for 20 bucks.

    and frankly i wouldn't really mind if it was fake since i could return it easily, but more that i'm not gonna tell if it is. any good advice? i've only held like 2-3 spydercos in my life. so i'm not an expert.

    Personally these fakes don't bother me. I went and checked some out and I'm actually thinking about getting some, but I'm not going to try and tell people it's real. Most of the ones I'm looking at are ~$20 but are copies of $100+ knives. The only people that would buy the fakes can't afford the real deal so it's not really taking money from the genuine companies and it also lets me see if I like a design. Maybe it will encourage me to spend money on the real thing if I like it enough.

    I had the "pleasure" of purchasing a fake PM as well, however this one is quite a bit closer to the original than mine...
    Mine has a good grind, looking better than on this one, but it has a liner lock (!) instead of the original compression lock, the screws are with rounded heads, and has no jimping on top or bottom edge. It has all the proper markings and signatures, not unlike this one.
    I doubt that the blade is really made of CPM S30V steel, but so far it's been holding an edge pretty well.

    Thx, CL. Unless you're broke, why buy junk? knives are tools and tools last a man's lifetime. If you work on cars or any skilled trade, you throw junk tools at the wall - they are repulsive to hold and when you think about it, a waste of resources. Can break or damage what you work on. No pride in craft.

    The obvious things you can look out for in the KO is the letter that's included uses very glossy paper when the real deal uses regular paper. Also, the engraving on the blade is a lighter color when the real one is darker.

I really like that as someone with little income I can buy china made stuff, my reason I can't get into these is the brands! Why do they have to put the brands on! I'm going to guess that it's an OEM that makes/made Spyderco stuff at some point and those are the ones that don't pass QA and don't qualify to get the Spyderco name on it. Check to see if it has the 'ding' (exact location changes per model, worth a look-up) of a faulty Spydie. Cheers.

    hey what i found as well to check spyderco for fakes easy method is to check the trademarked hole there should be a sign of the high carbon steal so it has layers in the hole where in a fake there is a smooth surface

    The easiest way to pick the fake box is the absence of the trademark "R", below the spider logo. There should be 2 "R"s on the front of the box, not 1.

    I see a lot of negativity toward Chinese knock off knives in the comments. I guess the quote "Imitation is the highest form of flattery" doesn't apply to cutlery clones. I wonder if attitudes would change if the knife was an unlicensed spyderco tenacious that was an exact copy for half the price of a licensed one. People might think that it serves them right for outsourcing American jobs. Companies that send their manufacturing jobs to china are at risk of having indistinguishable duplicates flood the market.

    I know some will probably hate me for this but i ordered a Fake Spyderco PITS, because i live in Germany and with our stupidly strict Knife Laws the PITS is the closest you get to a locking Folder. But i am not paying this extremely high Price Spyderco asks for. They really should make a budget Version of this knife, without Titanium Scales n Stuff to make it cheaper because some People like me do not have a second Option rn. I am 18 and still going to shool so there is no way i can spend around 400 Bucks on a Knife.

    I have a real PM2 and I admit I bought the 8$ fake from wish also, but only after I bought The real thing.. I bought it for a cheap junker knife I dont nessecarily care about loosing if I did, and to practice sharpening it so I dont ruin my good one.. yes i know the steels are not the same, so it wont be the same for sharpening. But that was my idea on it.

    One of the (many) problems with fakes/clones, IMO anyhow, is that they give legit Chinese mfgs. like Maxace, Rike, Reate, We Knife Co, etc. a bad name by association ... these guys put out a quality product, and they are not producing 'clones' - some may be "similar" in appearance to other knives, but they are not stamping blades with a Spydie logo and trying to pass them off as legit Spyderco products, for example. That's the big difference.

    It's very easy to see the attraction here,esp the 80+% of the knife for 20% of the cost aspect! BUT the knife you have is NOT what it claims to be,and you know it.If it fails in any way,it's your fault!
    Also the guys at Spyderco (esp. Sal!) are some of the nicest,hard working,dedicated 'Knife Nuts' there are.They genuinely want to make the best knives they can.When you buy a fake you rob hard working honest people and reward fraud.If they want to sell copies they should not use the copyrighted Logos or patented design aspects.I speak as a sinner I bought one in the past and I got what I paid for a cheap inferior copy,and a feeling that I'd sold out myself and a fellow worker!

    But if you get a wavy grind from spyderco, and you call them and ask. They will make it right. Between that and me browsing bladeforums and just seeing the stand up philosophy of the company, they have earned my loyalty as to never buy a knock off. That said. 20$ really? I'd be lying if I didn't say I saw the temptation.

  • @roncharest7981

    The reason this knife, and other knock-off knives, may be such good quality is that they may have been manufactured in the same factories as the "real" knives. Companies outsource manufacturing to China and in many cases help set up the factories. The factory managers will manufacture the branded goods during day shifts and meet their quota. Then, during night shifts they will manufacture the very same items "off the books" using the same tooling and perhaps even the same workers, and sell through channels other than the brand owner.
    So in essence, you are receiving the same product, but it's cheaper because you're not paying for the brand label markups. Not trying to excuse he factories for doing this as it's still illegal and unethical.
