I really don’t get how people came to the conclusion Dororo is trans. I think it’s pretty clear she is a girl. If you’ve seen the ending of the show she acknowledges her femininity and becomes more feminine looking as she grows up. In a world where being a woman meant either getting sexually assaulted or killed for funsies, I think her parents only raised her as a boy to protect her. In the end, Dororo knows she is a girl but plays the act of a boy as it’s easier to pass for one since she is still young. Again, because people will call me transphobic for “assuming Dororo’s gender.” Is it so wrong that when that era of war and plundering is over, you finally see Dororo freely expressing herself as a woman? To me, finally seeing more of her feminine side come out is hopeful that she can be who she is without hiding herself, which is truly beautiful. So instead of turning it into gender identity agenda, why not focus on how Dororo being a female and embracing it in the end as a sign that the era of oppression of women from the war is over is a great thing and a great message that fighting over a system that prejudices against women in this case will end up with hopefully a better world where women will be free to express their femininity and not be seen as an exploitable object or trophy. That to me is how you write through your story a neat message without telling it directly to the viewer and on that aspect Dororo succeeded pretty well. Edit: The imagery of Dororo transitioning to her adult feminine self is surprisingly pro-feminist without even having to say it out loud.
Nobody even knows what "trans" means anymore. 90% of people claiming to be trans couldn't even tell you what they're transitioning to, or what they're transitioning from. How can someone transition from a _man_ to a _woman,_ or vice versa, when they can't even define what a man or a woman is?
I'm pretty sure there's someone out there trying to point out she's a binary-train with a past in the Japanese empire and related to A. Lincoln. She's a good person and she's a girl ffs, not that hard to get.

In that episode Dororo also said that her mom could have been involved in prostitution as well, but she avoided that fate. Basically what was I trying to say: young women and girls who are travelling alone might get coerced in prostitution or get raped. Dororo hides the fact that she’s a girl to avoid get sexually abused (since she perfectly knew what might have happen with her mother).
Pretty sure her dad as a bandit chief and when both the dad and the mom died Dororo decided to act and dress like a boy because travelling around as a girl at that age at the time was very dangerous. There was an episode where Dororo recalled her memories and she was dressed in beautiful girl clothing and was literally referred to as a princess by her dad’s subordinates.

His dialogue in that scene makes it clear that her father raised Dororo as a boy since she was a baby. And in all the flashbacks, she's dressed as a little boy and treated like one. I always assumed her parents did that because what they did was dangerous and they knew at any time Dororo could be left without the protection of her parents.

The amount of transphobia in this comment section is baffling. People who see Dororo as trans are just as valid as people who see her as a girl disguising herself as a boy or even simply a tomboy, as that is what the story implies. At the end of the day everyone is entitled to their own interpretation of fictional characters, there is nothing wrong with seeing her as a trans man: while it has indeed been getting better over the years, the severe lack of (proper) LGBTQ+ representation has made our community understandably very eager for even a crumb of characters that defy the binary that is so overly present in all types of media, especially shōnen anime. So it shouldn't be so surprising that characters like Dororo who reject that norm are very important to us, as we feel finally seen in a way that isn't pejorative. The term comfort character doesn't exist for nothing. What really annoys me is when people share their interpretation online and some assholes talk about pushing an 'agenda' without even knowing what that is and throwing the word around whenever they see LBGTQ+ themes on the internet.
