turned out good.i did a similar experiment with burnt copper wire from transformers it turned out well. only thing I didn't use after I rinsed the copper with water was baking soda. Great video 👍
Great information. Just wanted to share when it comes to sizing. The 'larger the number, the smaller the gauge only works until you get so far. Once you hit the 1/0, 2/0, 3/0, 4/0 and then go into the 'hundreds' 250,350,500 the wire gets substantially larger/heavier/more valuable. :)
vinegar and salt, then its weedvinegar and tabel salt, to Remove Gold from electronic, DONT WASTE TIME to soak it, better to leave it as it is, because you get dirty toxic vinegar insted that you have to deal whit great video
Ok I’m confused I see videos saying bare bright has to be a certain thickness for each wire strand(roughly the size of pencil lead) but some of this here looks smaller
The bare bright confuses me because i stripped romex and it was a bright color but after storing it tub with a lid it turns a darker color not tarnished but darker copper color anyway to stop that from happening??
yep, that is oxidation. with bare bright you should sell soon after stripping. try using the vinegar method. It might go back to BB. (not sure, but it will at least look nice and clean)
Try first using alcohol to disslove laq. or shellac insolation frome the wall, THEN use a small voltage, home made flashlight electrologist gun barrel cleaner, to further clean the wire, perhaps in an ammonia solution, in a metal bucket. This tool method is used by shooters, who have it all take place inside the gun barrel, to remove copper/brass/lead fouling from the bore, but they are careful no to use it more than 15 minutes or risk damaging the bore. A thin walled steel stock pot or turkey fryer, should give you good service but, some real rubber sheets, for plumbing, etc, from a Home Depot, to insulate the full bottom and up to about four inches, (about a meter and a half) if the lower side wall, should be enough to keep the copper from touching the pot's metal, and allow you long enough to get the copper "bright". If you have an insolated endoscope that can connect to a phone or laptop, use that to record the process being done, from the perspective of being in the pot, watching the formation of hydrogen gases being produced as tiny bubbles on the copper wire, for your favorite school classes. Good luck and Godspeed, Eli
I find Bars Keepers Friend and a wet rag does a great job and it's $5.00 Canadian at Home Hardware as long as the wires are not all twisted up waiting to take some into the scrap yards here in Edmonton Alberta and see what they grade it as!
@@TinManScrapper bars keepers friend it like powdered brasso kinda cleans as you wipe it down I do it to as I strip and bundle up the 16 gauge and thicker wire.
i was looking for a better way to turn number 2 pipe into number one without using a wire weel ... the wire weel although fun puts particles into the air and it makes it hard to breathe.. being 65 with lung problems no need to damage my health . ..
Good question. I am sure any type of acid has the potential to clean....coca cola would as well. Thanks for the comment. I would not use ketchup, apparently we are heading towards a ketchup shortage and it will be like gold.
I tried cleaning my burnt copper wires with vinegar salt n lemon juice but after a day I rinsed. it and left to dry when I got back in a few hours o noticed it turn green and I never used baking soda after that maybe do it from scratch n see how it goes if anyone had an experience like that I would love to hear their comment thanks
some places are great. I work 3rd/4th grade combo class. (back of the room with the slower kids) What is not so great is the closest scrap yard is a two hour drive over a mountain range. (and they are cheap)I mail the good stuff to Ohio and Las Vegas .@@TinManScrapper
I think it really does depend on who is working the scales when you go in. There have been times where I have thought I would get downgraded and did not and other times downgraded when I thought I should not have. It does work to clean. My dad has also threatened to gather it back up and take somewhere else….that seems to change there minds too sometimes.
I have seen some throw in fire to get the glued stuff off., but not worth it it my eyes. The core of the motor I just throw in to copper motor pile and take the 10-15 cents a pound.
Bend it till it cracks then scrape it with a blade or pull it across a piece of broken granite counter top. I'm thinking they no longer varnish electric motor windings. I was told thirty or forty years ago it was enameled wire. There's a chance it's been upgraded to urethane. However, the mention of sticky reminds me 4 months ago I broke down an A/C compressor and removed the windings and they were indeed sticky. I attributed it to the oil and freon . If I could remember which contains horse hooves between Shellac and varnish that's what I would guess. Then again Shellac may come from beetles and they are sticky to my shoe. :)
And for the younger crowd... DO NOT SMOKE FROM COPPER tubes or fittings. Copper outgasses toxic gasses that among other things makes your hair fall out. Ask anyone who has worked at Wolverine Tube in Decatur Al.
Yes we are North Americans. Not sure what your point is, since I am highlighting that there are different prices and rules depending on if you are from Canada or US
Very thorough explanation. I can tell you are a wonderful teacher. Thanks for taking time for these videos.

Thanks! Yeah, kids are great for sure. Thanks for the comment.
Great info. Thumbs up fellow Scrapper and planet lover
Thanks. Have a great weekend.
I'll be trying this for sure thanx for all the great info Tin Man 👌
Interesting experiment with the vinegar cleaning the copper. Not sure I would spend the time doing it. 😎😎🔥🔥⛏⛏
I’ve used sulphuric acid from a car battery, that worked great!
What a mixed copper go for in a burnt copper
I think your absolutely awesome!!! I dont believe i need to state why (the obvious). Thank you, i truly appreciate all you do, and explain.
Like a golf score with the lower numbers
Thank you so much for your help.
Glad it helped. Thanks for watching.
I can’t believe there is only a 30 cent difference. Between bare and #2
Because it’s still copper
Ok I’m confused I see videos saying bare bright has to be a certain thickness for each wire strand(roughly the size of pencil lead) but some of this here looks smaller
Ok sorry it looked smaller from afar

I did the vinegar test but copper changed to rust coulor

My question is ....is the cost of the vinegar worth doing this ??
I bought one container and use it over and over

Expert opinions say Vikings didn’t have horns on their helmets. You were a great looking Viking 😂. 🐎🌻✌️
Lol, true. Thanks for the comment.
Wonder if citric acid would do any better, does a hell of a job on a moonshine still , ketchup cleans some what somebody try it out on wire

Muratic acid !
If you had some sort of flap disk agitator you could potentially turn that into bare bright.

the Baking sofa helps neutralize the reaction afterwards. I have never tried burnt wire, I wonder if that could hinder the cleaning with vinegar
Great tip
Thanks. Stay well.
I’m sure you’ve mentioned before, but what subject and grade do you teach?
I actually teach FSL to grades jk-8
what is FSL? french as a 2nd language? down here in Cali we have ESL (English) bet you can't guess why.@@TinManScrapper

Try mayonaise ! It makes copper shiny and bright after a few hours.
and very oily
That's is great.
The air tarnish is no issue for the recycling process, it’s just made to be by you in the scrap biz to rip people off.
wrong! selling to hobbyists I do not get as much if it is dirty, selling as clean I get much more $
Why is your garage so clean?
Oh, if you only saw the left side, I have not been able to park in that side for at least a year.
It's number one regardless
thumbs up bud
Add a little salt to that vinegar and heat up that wire till it's red hot and dip it in and it will pass for bear bright my guy
do you realize how much work and time that involves? I have 46 pounds of very thick wire. I will stick with vinegar.
I heard it's really worth using vinegar if you have burnt copper
I got over 100 pounds of scrap copper gutters at home . I need to try this so the scrapyard won't try to fuck me over . Thak you

Clean copper peroxide mixing water and baking soda in it so clean copper

You can make copper shiny by using lemon juice and salt.
White vinegar salt mix in it to clean copper
Yeah it cleans it but does not make the copper bare bright. It does up it from #2 to #1 though
Don't do it when u rinse it off turns BLACK not a good thing

The vinegar cost $1.29 for the jug.
What kind of teacher does not know the word oxidation?
Sorry, not a chemistry teacher for one and not sure why I have to get all technical when I am merely explaining that vinegar can upgrade your copper.
hehe, vinegar cost you 1.29 a pound. You are too cute.
