I respect Brands dedication to the sport, but he is the proverbial deer in the headlights in regard to knowing how to close the gap between them and first place. This season, largest loss at home ever, coaches son gambling, Ferrari Flu, their 4 AA’s 3 were transfers, placed fifth and were behind by over 100 points, lost overall team score record, and here is something I think you can use on how far Iowa has fallen - when Griffith won at big tens over Iowa, and got hurt, he was limping off the mat, and slid his singlet straps off his shoulders 2 feet from the edge of leaving the mat, and MORNINGSTAR started screaming at the top of his lungs begging the ref for a penalty. 🤦♂️🤦♂️
You’ll never get anything out of him. One thing I like about dresser, who isn’t as good of a coach, but he tells it like it is all the time. Lol brands is crazy
Gotta love when TB talks because he generally tends to say or offer nothing. He should stay behind the curtain because he hasn't got it done in years. Lee gave them some ink, but he's gone now. Settling for second is no longer a given now.
Tom brands signed a contract through June of ‘29. According to Des Moines Register. Pretty sure he’s not going anywhere. It’s a huge salary for college wrestling.
I loved watching brands brothers growing up but unless Iowa fan are content with getting second then unfortunately they and John smith need to go, the gap between penn and literally everyone else is quite embarrassing at this point, and they have done all they r capable of doing at this point, Zain train would be great for Iowa because of his ability to stay in the circle and beat u no running just old school wrestling
He usually just says, "we gotta get to the legs, score more points, want it more." I like this guy, but wrestling has gotten a lot more technical, and simply out working your opponents isn't enough anymore. Iowa can't and won't catch Penn State if the atmosphere doesn't change. They will get some good guys for the next 4-5 years based on legacy, but eventually, there won't be any young kids left that remember the glory days, and they will go elsewhere as well.
Congratulations Coach Brands. You handled that post-NCAA tournament interview well. Keep doing what you and your staff will do to get the most potential from your wrestlers.
@@askeen333 I haven’t spoken with Coach Brands. In the wake of this tournament I don’t know what may be running through his head at all. And we do know Iowa is a very competitive program year in and year out. I do believe Coach Brands cares about the wellness of his student/athletes. He is a proven successful competitor as a wrestler and as a coach. I am also certain that Coach Brands doesn’t like to lose. As a tactician Coach Brands will now go back to his office during the offseason and reassess the situation that will improve the potential of each of his wrestlers for next season. Lifelong winning and success is coded in his DNA. Success is all he has ever known. I wouldn’t be so quick, not even close, to write him and his Iowa coaching staff off yet.
@@joeguerra8435 Iowa wrestlers, aside from a few transfers, wrestle like they’ve never heard of far ankle defense or scrambling. It’s not 1993 anymore. The sport has changed. Iowa might catch Penn State in a down/rebuilding year once a decade but until they bring in a non-Iowa guy and completely rebuild the program, it’s a distant 2nd at best.
@@askeen333 I’m not an Iowa fan. I’m Penn State all the way. PSU is just clicking right now and everybody, and I mean everybody to include Iowa, is eating their dust and chasing them. Watch out for Ohio State next season. They have young wrestlers who performed well at the NCAA tournament. If anyone does give Penn State a challenge next year it will be the Buckeyes. I still give Tom Brands the benefit of the doubt. Unless, of course, there are unpublicized issues behind the scenes that are disrupting the traditional Iowa flow. No question, he has to restock his program with quality new and young talent. Now, if he is able to recruit that highly vaunted talent and they are still willing to bail on him through the transfer portal, well, that may then raise questions about the quality and value of the Iowa coaches themselves. It’s got to be tough, but not an impossible situation, for all college wrestling coaches who are left chasing this juggernaut called Penn State Wrestling.
What’s with the Iowa guys not going out there and trying to completely dominate matches? For the longest time except for Spencer they haven’t had anyone that does out and and tries to completely be dominate. Very frustrating as a Hawks supporter.
The story of Morningstar just blows me away. He’s gotta go at least . He was the expert at the 2-1 no takedown victory. How can he teach wrestlers how open up he can’t. Griffith just blew out his ACL still beats Kennedy and Morningstar does that shameful.Telford and him have to go for a start. Terry who I loved as a competitor is embarrassing matside. Tom is in a tough spot. But think he keeps the job as long as Gable supports him. Gables cronies bring the money in to Iowa. The old goats have the money . Don’t think Gable will turn on Tom. That’s his boy, we’ll see. David Taylor would be the guy after he gets second gold. Somebody gonna hire him. See opening at Wisconsin coming Bono program in tatters. Maybe Askren but I doubt it.Again we’ll see. If no changes Penn State a lock for next 4 years. That could motivate Gable to act . Cael the winningest coach would drive Gable crazy JMO
Not sure where Iowa goes from here. Think Real Woods laid an egg in the semis, he wrestled not to lose, and didn't seem agressive enough to win. He lost his fire somewhere this year. I see Nebraska and Iowa State as having a better shot at challenging Penn State 2025 but that would be pretty far fetched.
@@williamoleary9330Not likely with the amount of Talent that PSU is pulling in right now. Even with going 4-2 in the finals and 6-2 in the semifinals, with 8 all American's and the other two just barely missing off the podium, there's a lot of talent that's still to come into PSU.
Penn State is a powerhouse no doubt, but things can change. I mean look at what Iowa did a couple of years ago. It is amazing though with what they’re Coaching there is just so dominant. The defense and top game is just other worldly. I do miss watching Zain, Nolf and Bo. Just dominate wrestlers that looked to pin or tech fall everyone. IMHO, it is the culture at PSU that makes their program so successful. Cael and staff are calm and calculated with their tactics and athletes. Look at the national wrestlers that have gone to PSU to compete on the international level. I just don't think the Brands brothers offer that cultural component.
$100 says Brands will NEVER win another national team title. Ok, no one will take that bet. $100 Says Brands lead IOWA team will not be second or Higher in the next 5 years. anyone care to take that bet?
Iowa gonna spend some cash and get some punks for the room! I will hate them forever because of the Ferraris. The clowns will ruin a great, humble sport.
Tommy B has ran a good run but let's face it. Iowa has some business acumen graduated wrestlers that would have never watched the roof leak. I'm a Buckeye, I'll give ya Ryan back. He had too many blue chips NOT to re-load. 8th? o.k.
I really feel for Tom Brands. He’s a real competitor. He has a genuine love for the sport and he cares about his team like they’re his kids. They found themselves in a bad situation this year. He will come back with some fire power and deliver some payback to Michigan and maybe Penn state if they can get their line up right

Iowa will NOT win another national title under Brands.

It is a fair representation of where Iowa is.
Iowa had 4 AA's....3 of them were transfers if they didn't throw a ton of money $$$$$ to get them IOWA has 1 AA and finishes around 20th place

Under Brands leadership, Iowa has ONE national team title in the past 13 years. Spencer Lee gave him a reprieve. He will not get another Spencer Lee.
Brands, Smith, etc are still elite coaches. Penn State is just that good. No change of coaching anywhere except for PSU will change that.
