    Thank you for this video. My day has been awful and so this information brightened my day alot since van life is in my very near future. You never hear much of this stuff just more about how cool it is to live in a van. Thanks again....I appreciate it.

      +Naturally NeCee you’re welcome. Vanlife isn’t all good or bad, it’s just living in a van. There are downsides for sure. But there have been more options, at least for me.

    I hope you completely ignore those weird, off-topic comments down there. So incredibly weird!! I like your genuine videos, and you have a simply wonderful, soothing voice for video. You’re a soft soul, and a good person. I enjoy your videos... no hype, no empty click bait, just real, thoughtful content. Thank you.

      +Charity G. Thanks. Strange comments are kind of the norm here on TH-cam even if they are unique to my channel.
      You’re too kind. I’m just a regular guy who lives in a van. Thanks for nice words.

      Static CamperVan, Haha I’m just a mom who’s adult daughter recently told me she wants to live in a van so I started watching nomadic youtubers to try and wrap my brain around it all and begin to embrace and support her choices.

      Charity G., bravo for being a supportive mom! There is a wealth of information to be found about "van life", and it's great that you are searching it out so you can be positive support for your daughter. I hope she enjoys whatever path she takes. 🙂

      +Charity G. That’s awesome. I don’t want to encourage anyone to take up vanlife but I do hope to show it’s an option. It’s great you’re supportive, Nate from Element Vanlife has struggled with his family over his choice. I think we need friends and family more than ever.

    When I was younger (right out of college), I took a temp job in a factory. It was very multicultural...the immigrants shared their wonderful lunches (and stories)...Chinese food, Indian food (my favorite), vegan food...great company and food. I got a call for the professional job that I wanted three months later. I was very lucky. I think of them often, and smile. Best wishes to you. Happy trails.

    Just because you choose to create TH-cam vids on van dwelling doesn't mean you have to give up more privacy than you want to. Well done. Pointing people in the general direction of how to find work is, I'm sure, still helpful to those looking to work, and interesting to those who dig the lifestyle.

    I'm happy for you that it has worked out for you and that you found a job that is a good fit in Seattle.
    Moving to new place, starting a new job and settling is often a daunting process. I would think that one of the benefits of having a home on wheels is that in spite of all the changes that come with the new places outside your doors, you bring your home with you. Inside your little four walls is totally yours...and consistent.
    Btw, it must sometimes be a challenging line to walk between being open and honest with the people who watch your videos, while also protecting your privacy. I hope that your viewers respect that. And you do a good job of finding a balance between the two in your videos. 🙂

    It’s great that you are sharing this information with people because it gives them great information on how to make a living while working in a van. Temp agencies get a lot more than a couple of dollars an hour off of you. For example: if you make 20$ an hour, the temp agency might be charging the company $40 an hour for your work. They are your employer and you cannot discuss with the contracted company as to how much you are being paid and vice versa. They are putting you under their workers comp and taking care of many things, but they definitely make a profit off of you-or they wouldn’t be doing it

  • @dominiquebt

    Thanks for sharing! I've moved often and traveled a lot - temp agencies have been a great resource when I've been new to a city and want to get my foot in the door at a company or make some money on a temporary basis. The industry is huge and jobs range from day labor to finance to healthcare to... A few of the companies are even international. The quality of the "franchise" can vary from one city to the next, though, even if they operate under the same name - I think it is important to find a few different companies in the industry you're interested in and "interview" all of them when you get to a new city you want to find work in. A great thing is that if you leave a city after working temporarily and return at a later time, you can often reactivate your file with the agencies you've worked for by simply calling them with your availability. They'll be glad to put you back to work ASAP if you've previously done well by them. Whew, long winded! LOL

    💜 again, I know this is a video from a long time ago, but thanks for sharing in this video. I am also aware that you were no longer working at that particular place. However, your advice here makes great sense. And it’s a good reminder for people that they have options and choices when it comes to work and where they want to live. I think a lot of times people feel like they don’t have the ability to move or change. And for some, it will be more difficult than for others. I’m glad you were able to make changes that made sense for your life.

    There is a lot of work for medical staff that is portable work. Jobs like nurses, phalobotomist, physical therapists and so on sign cntracts assignments for generally 3 or 6 months. They can sign a contract for another city or stand down until they want another assignment. There are also portable jobs for security staff which are by assignment. Customer service jobs are often portable and can be done from lap tops with company softwear. The airlines are hiring agent's and they can work from anywhere just some things to consider. Schools and institutions will hire seasonal and project workers for jobs like painting and preping dorms for the next school year. If you have some sills like driving a fork lift or if you can do office systems aps like excell or teams you can work from anywhere. 12:12 If you love what you do its not like work but an exercise in an adventure.

    I temped for a few years when I was young and single and never had trouble getting work in California, but when I temped in the big coastal cities, I found it financially impossible to live close to work or the ocean (no one was living in a van then). It would have been wonderful to have the job flexibility, the City and beach all within easy access on my days off. I'm glad you discovered the means and opportunity to have them in a place as beautiful as Seattle.

    Good information man, this should, could be helpful for alot of the dweller/nomad types for sure. I'm lucky in that way of having a job that i travel for a living but im away from my girls so its a give and take kind of thing. And with a dweller/nomad lifestyle, theres minimal finances IE - electric, mortgage, in my case, paying daycare for my child, property taxes, home gas, water, trash etc etc. u get my drift. So im sure yall can save a butt ton of money and dont necessarily NEED to make a huge amount of cash to live COMFORTABLY.

  • @kabukiwookie

    Thats what my company does. We go through temp agencies to weed out the not-so-good employees to get the one good one. Then we we buy them out from the temp agency and pay them more then we paid the agency to get him/her. We will go through 20 people before we hire one permanent. I personally didn't get hired this way.

    • @StaticCamperVan
      @StaticCamperVan  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I had no idea that’s what companies do but it makes great sense.
      After a set number of hours the temp company releases a worker to be hired directly.

    • @51249ca
      @51249ca 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The temp companies make mint off hiring companies that buyout a potential temp employee. They probably spend less than 2 hours on an individual (simple paperwork, testing, a few phone calls). Then they get reimbursed up to 20% of a yearly salary payout from the hiring employer. Seems like total gravy money to me.

It's hard to find employees who show up on time, actually give their attentention to the job at hand, not acting like they're doing you a favor by being there. I found that you might get 1 or 2 decent employees out of 10 prospects. As an employer, a temp agency could serve well as a pre screener. I just drove through your city the other day. This may not be an advice video but it does illuminate the thought process, many of the considerations for nomads who don't already have a livable fixed income they can live on. Not every TH-cam channel is a big moneymaker either, so people have to think about these things.
    Temp companies: I worked for a famous temp company in office work back in the day (think green) and one day I happened to see the invoice for my services. They don't show you, it was sitting out on the desk and I looked down as I turned and BINGO. I made, like, minimum wage plus (typing and filing work) and they charged the company a LOT more than I made. I don't remember the multiple (I have blocked it out it was such a shock) but clearly I was on the losing end of THAT deal.

    Great video. Temp agencies are great, but tricky. I work for a stage hand company that is national. But they aren't connected offices (just like you talked about), so I only officially work for the northwest office. Unless another office request some help from out of town, you can't really do it while doing massive traveling. Which was a let down, but I've had plenty of short term work through them that paid way better than my gig economy jobs. I consider gig economy jobs my filler and the agency work more a primary. Fully freelance is the dream for me tho.

    I worked all though college summers with temp agencies. All the weird and strange jobs gave me a lot of stories and change. There is another type of agency that is more permanent placement too. Once I applied in a jobs paper that was for international jobs and I got 2 interviews out of 3 tries, but I got a job and didn't go. They will fly you there too one was Virgin Islands and the other Mexico. But that was a long time ago and now replaced by internet.

    have done temp agency work in the UK. its a zero hour contract and you have to be ready to go with every call or they dont call you again. they own you outright that way. you end up living by the phone a phone that may never ring again. glad its working out for you bro. getting in with a good firm that asks for you by name is a good gig. it is less jumping around when it is a regular place

    Good info! I've worked at temp agencies in my past. Like you said, some assignments are good, and others are so-so, or bad. If the job was horrific, I suppose one could state to the temp agency the reasons why the particular job does not fit well? It also sounds like this is an option more if one is willing to work at least a month on an assignment? I hope not to have to do that frequently when I retire into a van lifestyle, but I'd do a 1-month stint here and there if that's what I need to survive. Thanks for the info! -G.

    Hi Scott, I am new at your channel and I am trying to catch up on some of your videos.
    Last video I watched, u were in San, now u in Sea. Great!
    What I don’t understood or maybe hv not yet come across ur videos, is why you don’t monetize some of the things you use or talk about.
    Amazon FBA, you tube monetization (even though they changed the algorithm), while you don’t hv lots coming in, any is always welcome.
    I also understand you don’t post regularly, and that might be the reason. But you can grow your channel and list the items you use or talk about.
    That should bring you some commission.
    Any thoughts?

    • @StaticCamperVan
      @StaticCamperVan  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks for your questions and comments.
      I’m not making videos to earn an income, I believe that I need to work a regular job. I make videos as a hobby. But I do monetize my videos with TH-cam. I don’t believe in always buying from Amazon so I try to encourage people to Google where they can find the products that I recommend, and then buy them locally.
      If there is ever a product you need help sourcing, please ask me here in the comments section and I will do my best to help.

    That sounds like how temp agencies work here in Australia. But here most places WILL ONLY go thru temp agencies. NEVER hire off the street. Temp agencies here can be very good pay or kinda pretty average. I have heard of some having HUGE pay. Like over 35 an hour.

    Have you ever thought to put away some silver bullion as another form of saving money for times in need? When you have two or more forms of saving money, your safety net is diversified. Making enough income to save 10% (5% cash & 5% silver for example) would be a very advisable move for a low budget traveling nomad. Silver is VERY EASY to buy and sell. There is TONS of videos on YT to help guide you into a decision that is right for you. Silver also does not cost a lot. Nor does it take up a lot of space in your van. It takes up no more space than pocket change.

    Thanks for this video, I'm gonna try temp agencies now... I'm still living in my cargo e150 van .... Love it. L, but need things to do.... Say how is that floor hole idea working out. Are you ever afraid of a car pulling next to you and the exhaust getting in? Anyways I'm gonna start poking holes in the van. My head is on the passenger side so I want a hatch or boat type device in the exterior of my Van. And when it open I can get. Better wifi from Shaw go or Starbucks... Any suggestions on a hatch or weather tight window or something their can't crawl thru ???

    • @StaticCamperVan
      @StaticCamperVan  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      In over five years, I’ve never once had any problems with my floor vent. I’d like to add a second one.

    Love that you're discussing this topic. What type of home address did you put on their job application? Did you tell the Temp company that you lived in a van? Were they ok with that or reluctant? (Ooops. Ignore that. I read your answer on same question as I read the comments below.) I worked full time as a temp for years in the 80s & 90s. Loved it. Paid weekly. New assignments, short & long-term, meeting new people, etc. I currently am temping. However I've found that temping in bigger cities is ideal, vs. smaller cities, where I currently reside. Sadly, the pay difference for temping in a smaller city, pales in comparison to the larger metropolitan cities that pay bigger bucks for workers.
    Glad you found a good temp gig. Priceless!

The rest of the interview wasn’t like a traditional interview. They mostly wanted to know what kind of job would best suit me and my situation.
      I don’t know if they contacted any of my references but I don’t believe they did.

      Larry Kramer, typically, due to healthcare reform, the temp agency will have to supply healthcare. It might not be great, just meeting minimum standards of “affordability” and “minimum essential coverage”, but those base-line standards are set pretty high these days, nationwide. That would be my guess.

    It's good you actually HAVE A JOB because so many of these van dwellers DON'T and then make sssttrraannggee videos trying to explain their "work". And you know they don't work when the first thing they say is "youtube is my job/income". I thought day labor WAS temping agencies. I have spent YEARS going to different temping agencies. In fact it's almost the only way now, here in Australia. You ONLY get permanent by STARTING as a temp. Recently quit after 2 years at one place. Wage went down although I had 2 sidekicks under me. Hopeless untrained management who "favorited" their way into the job. Things became a complete mess with no sense of priorities. I am having a few months off. Still got enough cash that I bought a 11 year old large sedan last week. Done about 120 thousand miles.
