    Downhill skiing is one of the most thrilling sports out there, but it's also one of the most high speed sports with most crashses. In this video, we'll take a look at some of the most known downhill crashes ( abfahrt sturz). The races were in the alpine skiing world cup from the 1980s all the way to 2020s, under supervision from experts and under controlled conditions. Featuring Herman Maier Nagano 1998, TJ Lanning 2006 in Lake Louise, Todd Brooker in Kitzbuhel, Hans Grugger Kitzbuhel, Brian Stemmle Kitzbuhel, Daniel Albreht Kitzbuhel 2006 , Pietro Vitalini in 1995 in Kitzbuhel, Lasse Kjus in Kitzbuhel, Chad Fleischer in Kitzbuhel, Urs Kryenbuhl crash in Kitzbuhel 2021, and the honourable mentions of Aksel Lund Svindal Kitzbuhel, legendary 2016 crash Lasse Arnesen and Scott Macartney in 2008 Kitzbuhel.

    Ex racer. I had a ski accident end my career aspirations my sophomore year of highschool. I continued to race into college but I was never the same. I was convinced to take one more run before lunch after a HS race at Northstar. Jerry had stopped below a 💯 blind knoll and I came over it at GS speed. Nothing I could do but put my helmeted head into his chest. We were both knocked out. He broke 5 ribs, clavicle in 3 spots and bruised his heart. Had to be life flighted to Reno.
    I destroyed my left arm. Radial and ulna were both shattered. 18 screws and 2 plates. As we now know, concussion science was vastly different back in 1996 so all the focus was on my arm. Never went through a concussion protocol. I suffered a moderate borderline severe TBI according to new standards. I lost my FIS and USSA national points because it was early in the season and I didn't have any results. Went to New Zealand in the early winter for camp and FIS races and knocked myself silly again (I'd also had 2 decent concussions in the fall playing JV football). It changed me mentally looking back on it now. I stopped doing off season training, started partying and tried to rely on talent. You can't do that at the elite FIS level. No matter how much talent you have. You gotta work your ass off 💯 of the time.

      Sucks you had a life altering injury and you were not even in a race. You must have been pretty good to have FIS points at 16....

    All crashes apart Number 1 and 2 were from Kitzbühel. Quite often the inquiries were worse that what was told in this video. Fences like the one in which Stemmle crashes were replaced with safer sheets, where you cannot poke through with your skies. Maier won the SG olympics 3 days after the crash, not 2.

    And then there was Gernot Reinstadler who suffered the same kind of accident as Stemmle, in 1991. Only in his case, fatally. He pretty much bled dry on the spot. Two years after Stemmle's accident, and nobody bothered to do anything about these nets that are supposed to exist for safety. It is reassuring to know that FIS remains the same administrative flustercuck as 30 years ago.

      No Reinstadler will be shown, Even though it May be worse

      Skiing needs some safteypushing guys like F1 has had in the 80s/90s

      Agree, however, safety is pretty good now compared to the old times

    • @shooter7a
      @shooter7a ปีที่แล้ว

      Come on. Safety netting looks pretty damned good these days. It is 4 rows deep in the critical locations, and quite tall where needed. When Gernot died, they were still using wood latch fencing in may locations. You never see that any more.

    Not sure where the person who did this video got their information from but a lot of the facts about the athletes being uninjured like Chad Fleischer, who blew his knee apart, wreck the hip, did some femoral damage and other injuries did not simply walk away. It amazes me when idiots get the facts wrong on simple videos and think that no one's going to check up on them. Makes me think that any other video they make is totally wrong as well

    • @speedkingz
      @speedkingz  ปีที่แล้ว

      Reply to that: Every comment is mostly on how they recovered in the long run. On Chad, he recovered well and to grt away with somr broken bones from that one is pretty good

    • @shooter7a
      @shooter7a ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah....Grugger had a very serious head injury...THAT ended his career...not his knees. He underwent a five-hour emergency brain operation and was kept in an induced coma for 11 days due to brain swelling. He lost full motor control of his right leg. Basic research.
