But still, in some way that can be called a miracle, Russian aircraft designers created their creation. Later, V.V. Putin himself gave the go-ahead for the production of this model.

Russian engineering has a history of doing the 'impossible' - the trick, it seems to me, is to see it as just the 'extremely difficult'. best example i have come across is the Tu-160; where the original Rockwell B1 project should have been followed through, Tupolev proved the concept with one of the most incredible aircraft of all time. here, the B-200 similarly proves how the Martin Seamaster could have influenced future development. I myself visited Russia in '93 and '95 - a privilege I will never forget.

These are magnificent aircraft. But possibly not suited to bushfires downunder due to a lack of inland water bodies large enough to take advantage of what it can do. I just had a look at the map near the last few fires I attended, and there's only one lake even close to big enough, and until recent rains, it was so empty that there was an island in the middle of it. And it's 80km from the fire. There's a reservoir 20km from the last fire-front which is a third of the size.. But not too small for an 802F Fire Boss. So, all things considered, I'd be leaning towards a team of 4 fire bosses. Offering more litres per hour delivered at a lower operating cost for this location.

Bigger faster and heavier loads ... Its limits are defined by the side cargo door as a freight relief or support aircraft .. its other limit is the sea state if i recall its about 1.3m max.. for landing and take off.
Turbo props tend to be cheaper to run and when Beriev was still based in the Ukraine they did slate a prop version but it may have been more of an un shrouded prop jet.
The Russian millitary are due to receive ASR Maritime patrol versions.
They also offered a 80+ seat airliner version .
A great pity this was not taken up by airlines serving remote maritime communities ... No runways or conventional airports required. 😎 Just a ramp and standing area to work from and wash down following Salt water operations.
The turbo fans hulls and UC have all been developed to withstand the corrosive effects of salt water on metal components. Its hull is compartmentalised to limit flooding due to a hull breach.
These can fly vertical following a drop ... quite a sight..

US MC 2 stol flyingboat. ASR and ASW patrol aircraft. Which can also handle seriously rough wave's.
I've wondered elsewhere if say the A400 military Stol Airbus transport could be converted to an Amphibious cargo aircraft ...though the real solution may be the Airlander HAV hybrid airship..for massive lifts on minimal fuel over land swamp, snow, ice and water.. and global ranges though slower than a fixed wing aircraft.
Look up the Convair tradewind.. the version with the opening nose door. It was the early turbo props that let it down and the fact it was a pure flyingboat Not Amphibian.

You hear all the time about bringing back certain past aircraft and for the most part it makes no sense but i would say it would make sense to bring the largest helicopter ever built back to fight fires and while there at it they may build a few for the military and for civilian use. There are a lot more fires than there used to be, they are a lot larger, and people have moved into many areas they once didn't live and these fires take place in.

    • @M3rVsT4H

Obviously it's not ideal. And it depends what's growing there. Some hardwoods can be surprisingly tolerant. While others like maples struggle. But it would take a lot of seawater to have a big impact. If you could save a few thousand acres of forest with 40-50 thousand litres of seawater, it would likely be worth it in most cases.
