im the guy yelling "YEEAAHHH!" after every dope ass change. this was on or around fleas bday cus they brought in a cake and sang happy birthday to him. they stuck around and talked to people a bit. omar's brother marcel was there too. this was arranged by chuck dukoski black flag's og bass player. as of yet a once in a lifetime type deal
For all those dissing Omar, all the music was basically written by him, that's why originally this 'project' was called 'Omar, Omar, Omar'. So the parts that John and Flea are playing (apart from the odd solo) were written by Omar.
I love the way he plays, its really crpytic and erie... You can hear it in ATDI and TMV quite distinctly, I thing its really what makes a LOT of their sound (both) id love to jam with 'em
John is one of my favourite guitarists, always has been and always will be,I love the emotion he plays with, Omar- a lot of his stuff I really like and some I don't, however I respect him alot as a musician and while I don't think this jam is his best work I think he's a very talented musician, Flea is just Flea and who doesn't love him? :)
Yeah I know. Omar played the solo on Especially in Michigan too. And I think it was Inside of Emptiness where he played on John's album mainly... Check us out with good music taste. I'm going seeing the Volta live next month. Looking forward to it =)
It's frustrating seeing these videos and seeing people expecting Televators pt. 2 when they watch. The organic interaction between the three instruments is quite beautiful.
Yeah, I have a great teacher and he actually made me listen and learn a lot of cool music that I didn't know. And the best thing is that he cares only about the music, not all the fame and stuff. He just plays anything, from Coltrane to Van Halen.
for you guys that don't understand omars improv technique, look up Larry Harlow and how he approaches improv soloing with piano and you'll see where he draws a lot of inspiration.
he's the guitarist for the mars volta, and before that, at the drive-in. try to get his solo work though, especially this album called "a manual dexterity: soundtrack volume one." it's amazing.
Well I dig Omar's input during this jam. Flea and John obviously vibe with him too, I mean they are performing with him. I doubt any of the Omar haters in this comment section will ever have the pleasure to do so. Improvisation is improvisation, no need to get weird about it.
i was here yelling "yeah!" repeatedly. flea was the star to me and just cause it was his birthday... which i thought it was weird he spent in east l.a with a buncha "anchor babies" like me. my favorite part of the show was when we all sang happy birthday for him. i was chillin talkin to omar's bro marcel who seemed extremely stoned. i talked to omar about beefheart, zappa, and crimson it seemed he took offense id compare what they did here to those. eventhough that's where the genre comes from.
no, its not. that is an SG II or junior, if my memory serves me. but i am pretty sure it is an SG (not a standard one of course). though omar typically plays modified ibanez jet kings now, he used a gibson for this little gig and has used it on past recordings. also used a squier supersonic back in the day. omar typically likes only bridge pups (particularly the seymour duncan jb, which i also use in my bridge).
that's kinda what i was thinking when i first heard omar's playing...like a year ago...but i'm kinda use to it now i guess? so it doesn't sound as weird to me any more.
@k0stil Exactly. Sometimes he plays in the "right" key, but then it sounds a bit boring. You have to know what you are doing to hit all of those tri tones and weird intervals, that shit isn't just chance. That's what makes him sound like him.
well the three of them are all huge captain beefheart fans, where the first jam comes from, and in general they all do equally complex things. omar just wears his prog on his sleeves with tmv. i'm pretty sure john sits in his room transcribing aphex twin songs all day, anyhow.
i agree. my experience with lsd has lead me to apreciate tmv and omar a great deal more. at times it was the only thing that kept me from freaking out. and i think omars style has something to do with him being left handed. hes really spastic and kind of wild. ZEKE
I agree. He kind of paints a picture that is hidden. Or something. It's floating. Sorry for the hard to understand text, but music does this to me sometimes :)
I'm tired of people calling music pretetious only because of the musics "complexness". Omar is fantastic, both as a guitarist and a composer. He seems to love what he does and I think that is heard in his music. His music can be both complex and primitive but I don't give a shit about that so long I enjoy listening to it. So please don't say things that about a person just because you donät like his music. Especially if you don't know him personally.
yeah john frusciante asked me to press record on his mp3 player when they started playing. when they were done, i picked it up cause it was about to be stolen and john's friend yelled at me as if i was stealing it lol then i saw them under a bus stop just chillin, omar and john, we chatted a bit and the night was sadly over...
@EvanTheMute John is def eclectic. He's the reason I started playing and he proves that he has a very tasteful ear, I mean dude has written some of the most epic rock riffs/solos of all time. But for some reason I feel as if his obsession with Omar is more to do with energy than it is with music. I mean I've heard Omar play some pretty rad shit but stuff like this just throws me off. I can understand tryin to leap into uncharted territory but sometimes that has to just stay in the studio.
no its not. i think it is a gibson sg with a p-90 but im not sure. it definately isnt his ibanez, which resembles a jet king except has only one pickup. the signatrure is black with a reddish pickguard.
John and FLea are fans of Omar..keep that in mind - they have been around a LOT longer, and he got the attention of two wonderful musicians..that says a lot right there..and yes, his improv skills were not up to par in that vid, lol ...but he is a mastermind, innovator, and pioneer, like Led Zep and King Crimson back in their heyday=)
(continued) Then also you have to put into perspective that this guy is Jamming with Flea and Frusciante!!! I mean that alone has to count for something and it seems pretty obvious that Flea and John enjoy playing with him, so there you go!
Before posting childish commentaries about Rodriguez' playing, you might want to go get some music and guitar lessons. Rodriguez' atonality is almost perfect in its execution. Don't forget John and Flea play in a band together and by now instinctively know what the other thinks or will do next. See the look on their faces at several occasions. This is an unforgettable document. Thanks for posting & sharing. I loved it. 5/5 (Never heard of Rodriguez before. Must hear some more of him...)
Possible, i dont know omar that much. but i know modern music is all about inconsistency . I got mixed up. It could be that omar like this kind of music and replicates them the way he hears it. Because a lot of self taught artists are very melodic. They emulate what they like to hear or rather what they want to hear.
well if this sucked in u're ear, i recomend u to star by listening to hanson or the back street boys, i'm sure ure baby ears would love and totally get that sound this is for peapole who knows about music,
@tweenboxyeah but you can learn to enjoy it, it doesn't even take much. appreciation of music is somewhat acquired over years ... I mean when i was 13 all i listened to was punk music .. and now i can appreciate and love music by Schoenberg. you know how boring music would be if it was ALL on the major scale and each note placed on the beat? I mean, composers basically threw out the regular triad harmonies and major scales like 200 years ago...and thats still what most people today like.
People who say Omar sucks just don't understand that he doesn't care about pleasing you. Different music appeals to different people, just because you don't like it and he's not doing something generic sounding doesn't mean he sucks. It means he likes something you don't. He composes nearly everything the Mars Volta does, hands it to the players and they play it- so if you can say that sucks, I don't know where your musical experience lies, I'd like to see you write a Mars Volta tune.
There are plenty who misconceive Omar's harmony style. If likened to the piano, he would make more use of the black keys than the white. I see Layne Staley's vocal style the same way. Controlled chaos makes the tight moments tighter. Meshuggah?
im the guy yelling "YEEAAHHH!" after every dope ass change. this was on or around fleas bday cus they brought in a cake and sang happy birthday to him. they stuck around and talked to people a bit. omar's brother marcel was there too. this was arranged by chuck dukoski black flag's og bass player. as of yet a once in a lifetime type deal
This jam session is amazing, you can hear the funk, afro-cuban and salsa styles rolled into this piece of audio soundscape!
I love both bands too and JF's solo work and Omar's. I agree with you about the emotion that John puts into each note, it's amazing!
awww....the hug in the end! what a sweet end to such an intense gig...would kill to see them play like this live
man that was so great. my three favourite musicians. I hope they make cd of this one day.
this is amazing! the chemistry between these 3 guys is amazing :P
Just great!! At 6:02 WOW!!!...abslutely unique these guys! So interesting to watch and hesr this! Thank you for posting this!!!
For all those dissing Omar, all the music was basically written by him, that's why originally this 'project' was called 'Omar, Omar, Omar'. So the parts that John and Flea are playing (apart from the odd solo) were written by Omar.
This is the newest comment and it was 7 years ago. thats fucking nuts
I LOVE Flea, I love John, I love Omar and I absolutely love this.
awesome trio... without words! :O
thats awesome! John, flea and omar rocks!
A+ 100. Would watch again!
I love the way he plays, its really crpytic and erie... You can hear it in ATDI and TMV quite distinctly, I thing its really what makes a LOT of their sound (both)
id love to jam with 'em
wow, those my three fav bands too!
i agree. every time i hear him, i think, this is just random notes, and the more i listen and watch, i see there's such a science to it....brilliant
Omar Rodriguez's brash tone and almost Sun Ra type phrasing in his soloing makes for mindblowing neo-jazz.
Great video. I absolutely love that groove at around 6:37
awesome jam
Wow Why nobody told me about King Crimson before?? I checked their music and is so great, thank you so much for this comment Panx Volta Hernandez!!
they are the some of the best musicians in the world!!!!
what an amazing session, remind me a lot to an Al Di Meola record i have
John looks so beautiful when he plays.♥
I love what frusciante does!
Yeah I know. Omar played the solo on Especially in Michigan too. And I think it was Inside of Emptiness where he played on John's album mainly... Check us out with good music taste. I'm going seeing the Volta live next month. Looking forward to it =)

briliant!
u said everything what needs to say.. i found omar after this vid too.. very nice trio.
i love the robert fripp style tritones from omar at the beginning of the second act...
I Love from 06.37 to the end... Flea is a melody-genius...
6:01 That's when the magic starts!!! Simply beautiful...
I think I briefly slipped into another dimension at some point there.
The hug at the end is really sweet.
this is so fucking amazing and beautiful!
that's a good Point, I'm lying if I say that I like it the first time but somehow after hear it over and over again...
damn...I could never keep up with these guys
Just like I said on the first part...I like it. A lot.
reminds me of captain beefheart a little... really amazing session wish i was there
Waaaaw! It is... Well, I don't find the words to describe this! *_*
this makes sense. ahaha improv in jazz back than used to be much better. but, these 3 are phenomenal!
god that was some straight funk!
He's not lost at this spot, he's free.
And though never looses the link to the Frusciante & Flea.
John Frusciante and Omar are both the best guitarists of our time.
for you guys that don't understand omars improv technique, look up Larry Harlow and how he approaches improv soloing with piano and you'll see where he draws a lot of inspiration.
So a Puerto Rican, An Aussie, and Italian American walk onto a stage and what do you get, great fucking music. This is great!
the build up to John Frusciante's Solo is just epic.
Just watched this again, and was able to relax and forget about my deployment. favorite part of this is at 5:55 all the way to the end.
Anyway great video, i dig it
DAMN RIGHT!
he's the guitarist for the mars volta, and before that, at the drive-in. try to get his solo work though, especially this album called "a manual dexterity: soundtrack volume one." it's amazing.

3 monstros

Personally I like Omar's parts, he adds a nice, dark touch to the beautiful grooviness.
Not to say that it isn't all beautiful already.
have you ever listened to The Mars Volta? Omar's guitar playing is amazing.
that is so fucking nice, i love it!!
no, its not. that is an SG II or junior, if my memory serves me. but i am pretty sure it is an SG (not a standard one of course). though omar typically plays modified ibanez jet kings now, he used a gibson for this little gig and has used it on past recordings. also used a squier supersonic back in the day. omar typically likes only bridge pups (particularly the seymour duncan jb, which i also use in my bridge).
that's kinda what i was thinking when i first heard omar's playing...like a year ago...but i'm kinda use to it now i guess? so it doesn't sound as weird to me any more.
i love this shit
Awesome Jam....I can see why people dont lime omars improv. Theres a time and place for "unresolved dissonance" (the bridge in inertiatic esp
@k0stil Exactly. Sometimes he plays in the "right" key, but then it sounds a bit boring. You have to know what you are doing to hit all of those tri tones and weird intervals, that shit isn't just chance. That's what makes him sound like him.
lol, the way omar is playing at the beginning sounds like one of the shred parodys
well the three of them are all huge captain beefheart fans, where the first jam comes from, and in general they all do equally complex things. omar just wears his prog on his sleeves with tmv. i'm pretty sure john sits in his room transcribing aphex twin songs all day, anyhow.
omar is my idol he plays like an E.T.
omars solo reminds me of miles davis bitches brew....3 of my favorite musicians...doesnt reallly get any better
i agree. my experience with lsd has lead me to apreciate tmv and omar a great deal more. at times it was the only thing that kept me from freaking out.
and i think omars style has something to do with him being left handed. hes really spastic and kind of wild.
ZEKE
John's smile @ 8:07 ♥
flea is a beast
I agree. He kind of paints a picture that is hidden. Or something. It's floating.

Omar is my favorite guitar player along with John so please don't make fun of their playing! They are far from being bad at what they do!!
you go rofloluwpmp !! Damn Straight!
I love Omar :D Hard to believe the man's already 34 years old..
6:37, bliss
Damn they are really baked.
that was fucking beautiful
youre right i dont know why they give you thumb down actually
haha i'd rather listen to that then ALOT of things! I love this shit though. well-composed riffs and amazing three part harmony. love it.
yeah john frusciante asked me to press record on his mp3 player when they started playing. when they were done, i picked it up cause it was about to be stolen and john's friend yelled at me as if i was stealing it lol then i saw them under a bus stop just chillin, omar and john, we chatted a bit and the night was sadly over...

The melody that starts at 6:37 sounds like an spanish song because of the rhythim and melody although they're using electric guitars and not spanish.
no its not. i think it is a gibson sg with a p-90 but im not sure. it definately isnt his ibanez, which resembles a jet king except has only one pickup. the signatrure is black with a reddish pickguard.

@Indiego89 "this." is like, i completely agree.
live he still does pulls that out more, but he seems to keep them pretty seperate at points
(continued)
Then also you have to put into perspective that this guy is Jamming with Flea and Frusciante!!! I mean that alone has to count for something and it seems pretty obvious that Flea and John enjoy playing with him, so there you go!
That was awesome. I just wish John was a little louder!
That bass is begging for mercy.
weird, but still saved in my favorites

Is it really Maurice Moss playing the guitar with Flea? Incredible!
i'd be having a super sweet dance session to this shit.
well if this sucked in u're ear, i recomend u to star by listening to hanson or the back street boys, i'm sure ure baby ears would love and totally get that sound
this is for peapole who knows about music,
i love the part @8:02 when they miscommunicate and one starts playing the next bit by accident :]
@tweenboxyeah but you can learn to enjoy it, it doesn't even take much. appreciation of music is somewhat acquired over years ...
