Heavenly! One of my favorite operas. I just discovered Ceysson at a performance of Tannhauser. The singers, esp Botha and Mattei, were fantastic, but I was drawn to the harp in the orchestra.
It would be better a little slower so you can maintain the tempo and play clearly. But this is Damase's worst piece ever for harp, if he actually wrote it. It sounds like something like Zabel, Parish-Alvars or worse. Exactly the kind of thing Salzedo hated, and how ironic that it is being played on a Salzedo model harp. Tasteless.
Tasteless you say? That's how your comment feels to me! Where to begin? Have you even seen the edited music of this piece, with the tempi markings? It doesn't seem to me... Even worse, do you even know the opera tempi it refers to? I had the pleasure to be close to Jean-Michel in the last years of his life, during my years at the Paris opera, where I played Tales of Hoffman in several productions. This piece was merely a little joke to him, a fun tribute to this opera he deeply loved, and he was actually sitting in the audience the day this video was made, and I made him rise to acknowledge his work. I think this concert was one of the last he attended in his life, and he was touched. Comparing this work to his Sicilienne Variée, or his Etude de concert, do not make any sense. As for your comments on Zabel and Parish-Alvars, and your worshipping of Salzedo, if you don't see the ridicule in them, I am afraid I can't help you. There would have been no Salzedo without a Parish-Alvars or a Zabel, as there would have been no Pelleas without Tristan, even if Debussy had his issues with Wagner's music. Your uneducated comments, and seeing irony in the design of harp I am playing, wins the day... But you are allowed your opinions, even if this is greatly helped by the anonymity the WWW confers you. Have a great day, and find better occupations with your time than trolling... EC
Magnificent! Thank you for allowing us to see the intricate pedal work required by this piece!

How many harps does he own?
He’s basically superhuman.
Jean-Michel Damase?
runnowhere Yes. Possibly his last work, too.
