Wow, this is a very rare survivor and I'm mad that I just found out about this Mopar auction. The CHP would take cars out of service around 60K miles before they would develop major component issues. From what I've read the 1959 Dodges were good units and well liked by officers.
Dang, a 2 door police car! And a decent big block! I'm a late 60's Mopar fan but I would be into building one of these for sure👍 another great video Steve and I learned something new once again from ya brotha.
THEY ACTUALLY JUST PULLED OVER SPEEDERS, GAVE TICKETS, ETC, IF SOMETHING ELSE THEY WOULD CALL FOR A PADDY WAGON, AS THERE WAS NO PROTECTION FOR THE DRIVER AS NO DIVIDER, WATCH HIGHWAY PATROL OLD EPISODES, YOU WILL NOTICE IT. THERE ARE LOTS OF OLD HWY PATROL VEHICLES IN CA, I SEE THEM AT THE CAR SHOWS.
When I was younger, me and my friends use to go to junk yards and looked for old cop cars and old station wagons for performance parts and heavy duty parts
This sucker is AWESOME! Like it would clean right up! The title gave me flashbacks to all the Coronet cop cars Toby Haliki crashed on the original Gone in 60 Seconds... beside that sublime Green RT Charger they rolled that garbage truck on top of!
Oh yeah I got both DVDs.....actually saw the original in the theater....rode my bike home ,got my friend rode back and watched it 2 more times.....only cause I had to be home by dark
This is cool...Jay Leno has a episode with a CHP car very close to this year... on that episode , it was mentioned that the CHP ordered the manufacturer to install a diff camshaft in these 383 engines and do a few other things.... like they had people that sort of were car guy people doing the ordering...
This would have originally come with a black on yellow plate, which was used from 1956 - 1962. Many years ago, a CHP helped out my brother and I when we were stranded in the mountains of So. California with an overheated car. I have never forgotten that. It wasn't long before he had us on our way.
Classic Ride Society did a walkaround here and there are some amazing cars. The '57 Savoy with a 392 in it was a neat piece. In fact that's probably it in front of this car, it was black-ish with a lot of the paint baked off.
my uncle was chp in socal in the south bay area --his friend took my sis and i in a brand new '57 chp dodge--we ripped around the hills,my sis 7 and i only 5-would never happen today!!-- i remember him saying the brakes were fading(no disc)- maybe we went by where the beach boys lived!! my sis was scared to death....the red spot in front is what the chp used for years to pull people over--calif was the last state to adopt radar so they paced you, when you saw the big grill coming up on your rear you knew they had you!!!no over head light to avoid detection, just that red spot and amber/red on the rear deck-cali is still black and white, same door emblem for 100 years! and the same blue tan uniform that is very classy for 100 years!
Bingo. Its weird that it is a 2 door, and that it has all the belvedere trim. A 2 door would lead one to believe that it was a pursuit car, and wouldn't use the back seat. But if it was a pursuit car, it would have the D-500. I think the red paint is the giveaway. Probably a fire chief car. Would still have the "9" in the VIN, wouldn't need the hot motor, but wanted it to look nice so kept the trim. Would still have all the lights. Respray it Black and White and PRESTO! It's a police car. Still, any Exner Era Mopar that isn't rusted into the ground is a keeper.
Steven!! Does this car remind you of an Edsel??🤔That long antennae is called a whip. The 440 would leave the 383 in the dust!! I’m shocked someone hasn’t restored this one. Very good shape. Some detailing and rust repair-more authentic tires and she would be ready to hit the shows/cruises!! It’s fantastic it hasn’t been parted out!!
We have a similar one you see at local car shows it has a factory 383 rb high deck engine Wich is pretty much a unicorn I don't know the exact Year but it doesn't have the massive tail fins and it is a 4 door it was a Missouri highway patrol car
Check year on it. Looks like RB block if 59' block stamp pass. side would be 36 maybe 61 for 361cu in. If 1960 38 for a RB 383. Block stamping will tell.
One thing that slipped by you, it has 1956 Dodge hubcaps for 15 inch wheels instead of the standard 14" wheels that were standard on the '57 and newer Dodges and Plymouths. IDK if that's part of the police package or if someone changed it out over the decades. Seems like the CHP cars would have dog dish hubcaps for 14" or 15" wheels.
ACTUALLY THE 2 SPOTLIGHTS WERE RED LIGHTS TO PULL OVER CARS WITH, NOT TO CHECK PEOPLE ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, YOU MISSED THAT STEVE! THE 2 REAR FACING LIGHTS, ONE IS RED THE OTHER AMBER, I REMEMBER THOSE CARS, I HAVE LIVED IN CA. MY WHOLE LIFE. THE REA LIGHTS ALTERNATED RED/AMBER/RED/AMBER FLASHING.
Small point but “interceptor” is historically more of a Ford term. Dodge police package models used the the term Dodge “Pursuit”. Maybe not on the tamer city spec cruisers but for sure on the more gonzo highway patrol, state police and RCMP units. Not sure if Plymouth had similarly catchy term for its high performance police models.
SORRY Steve Magnante, But Interceptor is a FORD term.. Dodge/Chrysler used the PURSUIT as its term.. Chevy/Olds/Pontiac used APPREHENDER!! you learn something new everyday yes
Cool car Steve!!! 2 questions, did the factory do anything with the springs in the police packages on these cars? Are those things on your legs to prevent snake bites?
He’s in Texas, in the middle of summer, walking around the middle of the prairie grass field with hundreds of cars that the Ole rattle snake 🐍 would be proud to call home. All Steve needs to do is walk around the wrong car and the damn ankle biter may appear from nowhere’s and give him a love tap so yes, that’s exactly what those are and it’s cheap insurance against spending a few days in the hospital from a snake bite. Those rattle snakes don’t play brother
Usually a police vehicle has heavy duty parts. It has larger torsion bars on the front and HD shocks all around!! I had a 68 Plymouth 4 door with no power breaks or steering! It had radial tires which made it a beast when turning slowly! It had 11 /1/2 inch brakes with double brake cylinders on the front! It was a staff car kept it in better condition than a patrol one. It had 90K miles which was the retirement figure then. This Coronet having two doors and 373 CU probably means it was a staff car too. Mine had a 375 HP 440 CID. It looks like it was painted and period lights added for show!! Real police cars don’t have door handles and window cranks in the rear and usually have a screen behind the front seat. Ford always outsold Chrysler!!
I met a man who had several 59 ex CHP Dodge Coronets but they all had D500 Motors and badges. Could this be a standard CHP control car as opposed to a D500 high-speed interceptor.??
That is pretty cool you see a lot of cars like that on the Highway Patrol show what does on Me-TV at 5 in the morning I have that car I would like to fix it up and just make it drag racer out of it just the way it is
Kind of surprised to see a standard generator on what appears to be a CHP package car. My late father had a 59 Plymouth Savoy police package that he got surplus from the La Mesa California Police Department(San Diego County). One of it’s unique features was a Leece-Neville alternator with an external voltage regulator/rectifier assembly mounted in front of the radiator for cooling. Dad had to replace that regulator assembly around 63 or 64, and I remember him mentioning that just the part was $54 in 1960’s dollars. I can’t help but wonder if a previous owner switched it back to the standard generator when confronted with the expense of servicing the heavy duty cop system.
I think this car is an older restoration with some of the police equipment reinstalled. Sirens and lights would have been removed before the car was resold. That red paint underneath implies the black and white currently on the car is not original. As Steve said its possible that the red was a repaint after police duty. We know that is was ordered as a police car but the question is for what agency. It "implies" CHP heritage but again those parts would have been reinstalled later. For all we know this could be a car from another agency's fleet.
I live in Los Angeles and I was born in 59.I would've killed 2 get that car. It looks 2 B in very good condition 4 its age.The reason there's no rust on it, is that is most likely from the LA area. 1 more thing. The CHP and Police use their cars 4 a lot longer than 1 or 2 years. At least here in California they do. It would cost way 2 much 2 replace those cars every 1 or 2 years.
That is a bad car man I would love to own that piece of history and leave it like it is just clean the interior up freshen up the engine and let R rip. Not too many 1959 Police cars around these days and that thing is bad to the bone
You know it, these cop cars are very rare and seldom survive their second owners - typically kids infatuated with cop cars who buy them at auction and then beat them to death or yank the HD guts for hot rodding then toss the 4-door carcass. But as a TWO DOOR this 1959 is one special car!!! It'll sell too, there is NO RESERVE!!!

It looks like one of its post chp owners (though not the one who added the non original tailpipes)added the full wheel discs . I figure he wanted it to look like the tv show “highway patrol “. I assume Dodge (misguidedly ) thought they’d look better than the (I assume this) small caps
As usual, great attention to detail.
Those dual snorkels are way cool along with that sinister work of art grill! Quality craftsmanship from a sadly bygone era.
ACTUALLY I HAVE SEEN OTHER MOPARS OF THAT YEAR WITH THE DUAL SNORKELS.
Wicked yes! When I got up close to one at a car show I relised how BIG this car is!
21-50 to Headquarters......Mathews. Seeing this car instantly takes back to my days of watching Hiway Patrol with Broderick Crawford....1050 Bye
1959 Dodge Coronet - it sold for $8,200 great car!!!
Someone got a hell of a deal on this 59
I remember these from the Highway Patrol TV series. Great condition. Gotta put this one back on the road!!!
10/4! 10/4!
I’m a sucker for police packages! This thing is insane!
The two door police cars are great! From back in the day.
Big block, manual drum brakes, no seat belts... must have been a wild ride!
THEY DIDN'T HAVE SEAT BELTS IN 57.
This actually a very cherry old CHP car. Pretty cool...it willbe on the road again!
