I think the target employee who called the cops should get a F, also. He’s taking too long, so instead of having an employee assist the man, who clearly has issues, you go and call the cops? Despicable. The cops have no shame either, treating him like that.
He already makes it so clear in the video that there's no for sure if the target employee actually did tell them anything about him. Target called about the actual shoplifter. There's no valid evidence the employee asked the officers to get the disabled man out.
It seems to me that they showed up to get a shoplifter, but maybe missed them. Then loss prevention guy complained about the disabled man tumbling with his cash at the self checkout. They must have assumed he was drunk or a drug addict. If they did tell the cops to remove him, they changed their story real quick, and threw the cops under the bus in that one... Either way, the cops should have known way better than to handle that like that. I think the guy has grounds to sue the store, and the cops. I hope he does.
"All I was doing was paying for my things" It would have taken the officers 5 seconds to show compassion to this man and help him. They are awful human beings.
"Don't catch a Felony charge by hittingme or anything"... THAT just shows their malicious and criminal intent to destroy a person's life. Absolutely Pathetic.

I guarantee you there will be a lawsuit. If I were a civil liberties lawyer in the State of New Mexico, this would be the easiest slam dunk case in the history of cases where both entities would be paying out of their nose. Unfortunately for the APD, it would be the taxpayers paying, but I’m sure your usual lawyer won’t mind as long as they’re getting a nice fat commission out of the deal.
@@msyemisi7930 racism.. discrimination against the disabled.. your guess is as good as mine. However if it's anything like the retail workers I've worked with, then they refused to help him because they were lazy and helping people with learning disabilities can be too much for some people. They don't have the patience for it. I've had co-workers literally stop helping a disabled person the moment they get irritated and they would leave the disabled person in the hopes that they would just go away. There is no such thing as compassion in retail. Just impatience and intolerance.
My hands are trembling as i type this.... my blood is boiling. How can you interact with this guy and not immediately think "ah shit, ok boys lets just get him checked out and out the door." He clearly hasn't broken any laws and those 3 cowards were begging to arrest him from the start. Youre on the scene, you have someone who represents target and the ability to use the smallest amount of common sense and compassion and work this shit out.
The employees at Target also need to be held accountable. This whole incident would never have happened if the employees at Target hadn’t of gotten this ball rolling.
If following the train of thought in the video, the police were called for another potential shoplifter. This was a side action on their part. This would explain why he happen to be still counting his money to pay the machine.
@MrBeevee5 While I can see your flimsy justification, noone was arrested for the original call which probably means their proof was just as flimsy. The police weren't even sure what the employee wanted them to do, with the shopper in this clip. Again, pathetically sad showing of inhumanity for no reason.
I can absolutely see this being a misunderstanding, like "hey, while you are here, go help that guy" being interpreted as "help us with that guy". The police were apparently called for an actual criminal, this just happened on the side.
@@pepperroni4016Either way, he was CLEARLY not violent, and was only trying to make a purchase; whether he was disabled OR impaired, what he needed was HELP. ...and the sick egotistical cop waited and watched - even told the others to wait - while he dialed 911, only to force him into cuffs when he finally got through - like a schoolyard bully. Disgusting.
Though he was mistaken, he thought the cops were security guards, clearly understood the difference and understood that security guards might present themselves as police and would not have the right to arrest him. He understood that he had done nothing wrong and protested the legitimacy of the arrest. These factors argue against the severity of his disability. It seems it was primarily the strangeness of his vocal tone that caused the judge to deem him incompetent to stand trial, robbing him of his right to defend himself in court. Simply having difficulty managing a self check-out is certainly not a reason to trespass a customer from a store. These services are not always easy to use. I have had trouble doing so at times and there is always a clerk available to provide assistance. Target's response to this incident was outrageous. Moreover, the result was simply that the store lost a sale and a customer.

Kicking down as a power play against a weaker individual; beginning with the Target employee and involving law enforcement with power egos showing how important and disgusting they can be. All this poor man deserved was a little help and understanding. Nice going guys. Hope you all slept well.
And if you think about the context, the reason he was taking too long was likely related to using a self-checkout machine. That's why stores should not remove all the customer service staff because they ARE needed to help people.
that's the reason why it's incredibly important channels like this exist. It's amazing to me how many people genuinely believe it's RARE that people in power abuse it just because people in power are so good at covering it up. Target better pay up!! They caused this, clearly he wasn’t stealing anything, had his money out, but was physically disabled, had a hard time with the cash. What a rotten company!
As the father of two handicapped children, this breaks my heart and infuriates me. I can safely assume it took years to teach the victim to be able to go to the store independently, understand police and security, count money, and so on. Yet the store personnel and police unraveled all that in mere moments… sigh
And to tell him he can never come back to a store that is probably one of few he is close to and feels comfortable shopping at…heartbreaking and enraging.
THIS! My husband and my brother in law have mental disabilities, and it’s such a long process for them to feel confident in themselves to go through the motions of life with their struggles, but for even cops, people who are supposed to pick up on these signals specifically, to ignore them all and act like this is purely infuriating
yes exactly. i imagine the young man is still closely supported by family members and are probably so proud that he has developed some sense of independence. the fact those police officers treated that young man in such an inhumane way was truly shocking and profoundly sad. i cannot understand how not one of the officers prevented this. The fact that the Target employee thought it was right to call the police and have the guy thrown out is equally disgusting. They were all effectively operating under the same principle, that they can prey on and bully and exclude and abuse someone who is "weak". What a horrible horrible thing.
I loved your comment. It was probably a proud thing for the man in this video to be able to handle this on his own. He got a bit confused. Hell, I get confused in those self-check-out lines myself sometimes! The Officers? They were clearly dealing with a mentally incapacitated human being, but they handled him as if he was a criminal. The cop doing all the talking is an animal. His two co-conspirator cops are also animals because they didn't stop this stupid arrest. They deserve whatever hell they go through, especially Skeen, who was in charge.
That "None of your business..." put the biggest smile on my face. Disabled or not, he know what he didn't have to give out. And he was right when he said "You're not police", they were just bullies.
The APD has decades of incidents just like this, or worse. Incident after incident after incident, after incident, year after year, after year, after decade, after decade. They are not just "bullies" they are incompetent, inhuman, anti-human criminal thugs. One of my first memories is walking down the hallway in my home, a 2 yr old dressed in pjs. A very tall APD officer dressed in all black scowling at me. He never changed his scowl and never said a word to me. He scared the hell out of me and I went back to my room. The APD is rotten to the core and has been for as long as I have been alive.

That fact that a human being looks at this and feels ‘arrest’ is the answer and not ‘help’ is beyond me. Prisons are filled with people like this.. what time are we living in?

He's just slow cause he's debilitatingly disabled and Target having a disabled customer dragged out cause he's not paying quick enough is just a level of corpo dystopia that makes cyberpunk look like an afternoon prancing around a sunny meadow.
I don't think prisons are filled with people like this man. His mental handicap isn't prominent in the prison system. There are a lot of issues that cause people to become mentally disabled due to drug addiction, but they do have a right to claim that they are incompetent to stand trial and many of them freely plead guilty or no contest and get found guilty by a judge when the prosecutor reads the charges of what the person is accused of. In so many of these cases, they should take their case to trial and never forfeit their right to a speedy trial and force the prosecution to prove the crime beyond a reasonable doubt. There is a log jam in the jails because of all these deals being made for shorter prison terms when a good number of them have a good chance of being found not guilty. In this case, the store and the cops were wrong and it is arguable that the cops knew that they were wrong for making this arrest and even removing the man from the store. They could have helped the man put his money into the kiosk and then help him out of the store and told the store that you can't discriminate against a disabled person. It is highly doubtful that it didn't cross the mind of any of those officers on the scene but not one of them stood up for the man. The man goes to jail, not certain if he was put in a cell with other inmates which could have possibly put the man in harms way, because real criminals have criminal minds and don't care about the consequences because they are likely getting a deal that is much less than the time they should be serving in prison and they know that they are already going to prison, and most of them don't press charges against another when someone assaults them in jail out of fear of retribution later.
Ditto. At no other time in history has the disabled population been more at risk in having a law enforcement encounter. LEOs routinely deny use of canes, crutches, wheelchairs, prosthetic legs or arms ("dangerous weapons") to verbal abuse, law lying and deceit, to denying life saving or medical maintenance medications while in custody. Where's the ADA in all of this? And I don't mean assistant district attorney! I mean our representatives from the Americans with Disabilities Act. yes exactly. i imagine the young man is still closely supported by family members and are probably so proud that he has developed some sense of independence. the fact those police officers treated that young man in such an inhumane way was truly shocking and profoundly sad. i cannot understand how not one of the officers prevented this. This whole encounter just made me sick to my stomach.
That fact that a human being looks at this and feels ‘arrest’ is the answer and not ‘help’ is beyond me. Prisons are filled with people like this.. what time are we living in?
Are they filled with people like this? I think you're thinking of care homes. He's just slow cause he's debilitatingly disabled and Target having a disabled customer dragged out cause he's not paying quick enough is just a level of corpo dystopia that makes cyberpunk look like an afternoon prancing around a sunny meadow.

Not to mention the pigs who just roll with it. It's sickening that the nightmares authors used to posit to us all turned out to be dreams.
Yeah, seriously. How disconnected to you have to be to not look at this guy and feel pity instead of aggression?
As a disabled person who lives in an area with questionable law enforcement this video is very much appreciated.
They have only one job... to help protect and serve Americas disabled population.
Bring back the death penalty
I am also disabled, the cops in my county shot a boy with autism while he was signing “I love you” and the cops got away with it. Cops murder people EVERY SINGLE DAY and get away with it.
I'm sorry for any struggles that you deal with because of insensitive people. I'm just a normal person that cuts hair but honestly the biggest joy of my job is learning and growing with the kids that I cut that have disabilities. I think everyone should be able to do the things that everyone does. No one should be made to feel less than, especially when they have no controls over how their bodies operate
When was it criminalized? @@yezusdascumlord7609 It's terrible to have the death penalty. Rich killers go to amnesty countries to avoid penalization of their crimes, thus taking their serial killing to these countries.

Cops no longer see America as Mayberry, they see it more like Falugia...... and they see their role as an occupying army.
This is a rare instance where a social worker should have been called to assist the man. Police aren't trained to show compassion
Most don't. It's them vs the public. The public is the enemy. A family friend became a cop, and it's like their own cult. He only hangs out with cop friends and abandoned everyone else. Even convinced me not to make a complaint about a cop who wouldn't charge someone after I was attacked in the street. He was on duty at the time and their helicopter was involved tracking people
I cried for this victim. It’s so sad what these police officers did to this man.
me too, friend. Where is the holy heart of any surrounding people to help this man check out, also? Have we truly forgotten to help a fellow person in need? Are we that much of being in a rush that we can't take the time to care?
I have anger issues, i didn’t cry, i was seething
This hits close to home my mom was like this but she didn’t have any mental problems she was just a short old Philippino lady who could hardly speak English..she had a fanny pack as well where she kept her money…instead of dollars she would of been paying with change God I miss you so much momma
Your not the only one 😢
Me too. Such a vulnerable man with obvious disability.
A Target employee should have taken him to a closed register and help him handle the payment. Sickening.
Do you expect anything better from a store that believes in selling transgender baby clothes?
Why take him to a closed register? Just help him at the open register like anyone else.
@@lisaa3978I think they meant take the old guy out of a like find a empty register use there code to cash him out and then he’s gone
@@lisaa3978Are you dense? He’s not just a regular person, he has a disability. That’s the whole reason to take him aside to expedite him paying.
@@ItzRanzo Old guy? Take him out of like? Why? A disabled person (or old guy) has the same rights as you. Do you want to be taken out of like if you are having difficulty? An employee or even another customer, should just respectfully and quietly help you where you are and not draw attention to you.
McManus needs a grade of A+. He stated his 5th amendment and asked for a lawyer. He also did not resist and was cordial in every way while others would have fought.
What bothers me the most about this interaction is that he articulated himself so well. They just never took the time to listen to his side and what he was trying to communicate.
Imagine how many people have been locked up in the past and had no cameras to hold these cops accountable.
The cops just have no patience or curiosity to understand what’s going on. Ask questions take your time be a member of the community
right, I’m so glad he didn’t tell them his name and he said it’s his right to remain silent. the officers are so dumb.
Such lack of empathy can only be called evil.
@@user-md8tr8dg5t who? Scranton Joe? Hahahahahaaaaaa
@@user-md8tr8dg5tlike yours did😂😂😂. What does your whataboutism have to do with this case again in NEW MEXICO? 🤡
Well we knew that as soon as we saw them in costumes with badges and guns.
What horrible people they are. He obviously needed help and they proceeded to charge him with a crime? This is disgusting.
Who sees a person struggling to pay and goes "kick him out!" And not "lets help him!" Christ thats disgusting.
As the parent of an adult disabled child, I would have owned that Target and PD. This makes me sick.
I truly hope this man has someone in his life who pursued Target and the PD. HELP the human being in front of you for the love of God
my little brother is like this and it scares me to death how people we used to once look up to for protection, now treat everyone like we are the enemy. they are now bullies with a badge and gun and can do whatever they want and it's sad. all three of those officers should be charged, and target itself should find out what happened and personally get that man his bike for free for the inconvience :\
I have been thinking about this since it was first reported. I am so glad they got consequences. It astounds me how many businesses don't teach employees about ADA rights. Even without a law any decent human would offer aid to this man or at least patiently wait.
I live in Sebring, Florida and a woman posted about a suspicious man acting strangely at the post office on a Sunday. A man pulled a firearm on him. The whole town was talking crap. He was a young adult with high functioning autism. Instead of admitting they are awful, they went hard on the mom for allowing him to be unsupervised. Needless to say.... I wasn't very ladylike in my comment.
Agreed, this behavior must stop. I have seen to many cops using their badges to promote their egos. This Chief and every training officer in this department needs to be terminated
I cannot believe these so called men treated this man this way!!! It’s disgusting
Monsters disguished like men.
I can. I absolutely can. Seen cops do this kind of thing many times in my life.
Albuquerque police hires the cops everyone else fires for use of force.
I’m never shocked by police behaving like criminals. It’s more shocking seeing a police officer obeying the law.
Imagine how they treat they’re wives or kids
I genuinely had tears running down my eyes as he was saying “I was just getting my money out” what a fucked up world this has to be for this poor man to be treated like this. It makes me sick
Me too this is horrible
I wonder if this is how citizens felt in 1940 Germany watching the Gestapo...
I’ve been a police officer for years and I’m a veteran, this video fucked me up. I’m 25, I haven’t been around the longest but I do my job the absolute best of my abilities with helping the public as my number one priority. God forbid I ever work with a officer like these guys, I would lose my fucking job and mind. Shame on them, it couldn’t be more clear that he was just genuinely struggling. This is what makes me beyond embarrassed to wear the badge and a brother hood with pieces of shit like these guys.
@@josephclark7243 You live in the safest time for a human being, commenting from one of the safest countries in the world. But fearmonger more bud
I love when officers say "well, everything is on camera, so" as if they think that is going to help their case...
Why not just help this man pay for his things and help him to his vehicle? That's what a good public servent would do.
