You can just imagine it... you've spent the last 10 minutes pumping hard to get your board up to the highest recommended psi pressure, and you then undo your hose attachment and pissssssssssss.... all that hard work blows back in your face! The noise of compressed air flying out of a recently inflated SUP is something we have all heard. And it makes you want to cry! All just because you forgot to put the boards valve in the inflation setting (push pin locked up) after you deflated it last week.
If you are using a Red Paddle Co pump or have a pump hose with the middle plastic strip removed, in this video we go over a great simple way to check if you have put the valve in the inflation position, before disconnecting the hose. It won't stop the air from coming out but it will give you a heads up that when you undo your hose you will have to act fast to get the valve closed off as quickly as possible.

You only do it a few times. I double check the valve every time before pumping 😂

Hey Joe, This is very true. But if you have the memory of a gold fish like me it really helps. I think i did.........o no i didn't! Thanks Reuben / SUPboarder

This never ever happened to me... can't really imagine how could it at all.
But the tip is great to check, if it happens to someone often. :)

Air reservoir will fill minimum 3 boards to 15psi at the squeeze of the inflator valve, and if you don't have a pressure gauge on said valve you can always check psi with a standard pen-type pressure checker. If you have room for your boards in the car then you probably have room for the air reservoir etc and if needed a nylon over-the-shoulder board carrying strap.

Great tip! It happened all last times and I was not aware of the button position. And I have to pump TWO SUPs for the family :/

If you really want to get on the water quickly, fit your board with a schrader car tyre-type adapter, which If left in situ after inflation automatically prevents the type of problem described here, but if you don't intend paddling with it on your board, then check that your inflation valve is down and ready to inflate, best to do this immediately after any previous deflation of the board; next get yourself a compressed air reservoir (which can be filled from a normal compressor) and an airline to suit (5m coil is more than enough) and an ordinary inflator for car tyres, to fit your schrader adapter, and when you arrive just fill up your board in a few seconds without getting out of puff. Most air reservoirs available will readily fill minimum 3 boards to 15psi at the

Does this work.. not checked on enough boards. But some say if you pressure guage doesn't drop during a pause in pumping then your valve is open? This enables you to see that your valve is open before you get too much pressure in. Can you experiment to see if this is fact or fiction?

    • @SUPboardermag

Hey Sam. Yes and no is the answer to that. The reason is because of a few things. 1, it depends on your pump. Can it hold the pressure and not loose any air around seals ect. Pumps like the Titan are well made wont lose air if valve is open or not. Therefore the pressure wont drop. 2, It also depends if the pump you are using has the plastic strip at the connect end removed or not. If it hasn’t the plastic strip will push and hold the board valve open the hole time.
But to answer your question, if the pump has had the plastic strip removed and doesn’t usually hold pressure during the pumping pause then yes your board valve is open and you will have to shut it quickly after you take off the hose. The tip in the video might not be the 100% best way for all pumps but if you are using a good quality pump that holds pressure like the Red pumps with the plastic strip removed its the easiest we’ve found over the years. Hope that helps a little??Thanks Reuben

I don't see an "open" or "closed" button on my valve - can you pls explain what you mean by that? It seems it can only tighten or loosen with the wrench that came with it. Thanks!

    • @SUPboardermag

What we mean is the small pin in the valve point on the board. If it is up - it is closed. If it is down- it is open. Thanks, Beau

Should the button be up or down when pumping it up? Thanks

Just remembered... this won't work with the GRI HP5 pump, nor with the Aqua Marina pump... both has a knob in the valve connector to push down the valve. Or at least mine has/had.

you can buy an overpriced silencer or 3D print it from thingieverse.com if you or your friend have a printer.

@@ezmegazmegamaz809 Unfortunately I don't have millionaire friends with 3D printers, but a towel pushed on the valve makes a perfect silencer. Much better then the overpriced ones you can buy.

A better tip would be to check it before you start pumping!! :) But yes, it's a good idea if you forgot to check.

Not working for all connectors, some are pressing the valve down, keeping it open.

Hi Donna, Thanks for your comment. This is very true that is why we have tried to highlight that at the end of the video and in the main SUPboarder post. It's all to do with the plastic strip at the end of the hose. Thanks Reuben
