I like the content. I understand why this series is done. As a reef hobbyists of almost 20 years I can see why there's videos directed towards new people to the hobby. I wish I would have had access to this type of information back in 2002.
in 2002 it was ROUGH. Equipment was LACKING. My longest tank was a 300gal for 5 years before I killed all my expensive tangs dosing iron. I have no idea what happened, though I added an iron supplement from my reef store, I woke up, the water was a cloud and all fish were dead. I have not had a tank since. All from adding an iron supplement. I grew cheato in 50 gal tank underneath. I only had to do a water change twice a year.

I still don’t even have my tank… It’s been ordered but I was told it would take about 10 days to get it to me at first I was a little disappointed. Let me say this, if i could rate this series out of 5* i would give it a 4.9. The information in your videos is extremely helpful, you are clear in your directions and information you present. The only thing I would have liked to gave seen more of is fish! No one i have watched has a series like this!
I run a small tank now...its a completly different learning curve with a small tank....way more water changes! I only add one new form of life at a time... i had green algae issues nonstop...water changes helped knock down that problem... im doing water changes once a month now... im running the fluval 13.5 saltwater tank... i keep 2 clowns and an emerald crab...2 small sand sifter snails and 2 turbo snails....thats all...no coral...just a large live rock display.... lighting with the fluval isnt good enough for most corals...even low light ones
The best advice for cycling is to not turn on your lights for the first few months and adding a clean up crew as soon as you turn the lights on. Dinos grow in 0 nutrients (aka your water is too clean) cyano loves stagnant water and high phosphates. Algae you might have to deal with especially if you start with dry rock
The clip at 4:30 is red cyanobacteria, not diatoms. Cyano forms those webs, diatoms look like brown dust and don't ever make webs like that. Both cyanobacteria and dinoflagellates also share that behavior where they fade at night and reappear during the day. Diatoms aren't dangerous, but the other two can be. Cyano can sometimes form a thick mat that smothers coral, and dinos can poison your inverts and cause big problems when your clean-up-crew dies and spikes your ammonia. It would probably be a good idea to explain how to differentiate diatoms, cyano, and dinos. Showing a picture of cyano and misnaming it 'diatoms' is probably not a good thing to teach newbies.
I find your content very interesting I have been in the hobby for a few years and great too have a fresh take on things. Also people who are negative on social media have nothing better too do. Do we see them making a channel I guess it would be hard and a lot of time. In the end of the day if you don’t have anything positive to say then don’t say it.
This might help... What do all algae (and cyano too) need to survive? Nutrients. What are nutrients? Ammonia/ammonium, nitrite, nitrate, phosphate and urea are the major ones. Which ones cause most of the algae in your tank? These same ones. Why can't you just remove these nutrients and eliminate all the algae in your tank? Because these nutrients are the result of the animals you keep. So how do your animals "make" these nutrients? Well a large part the nutrients comes from pee (urea). Pee is very high in urea and ammonia, and these are a favorite food of algae and some bacteria. This is why your glass will always need cleaning; because the pee hits the glass before anything else, and algae on the glass consume the ammonia and urea immediately (using photosynthesis) and grow more. In the ocean and lakes, phytoplankton consume the ammonia and urea in open water, and seaweed consume it in shallow areas, but in a tank you don't have enough space or water volume for this, and, your other filters or animals often remove or kill the phytoplankton or seaweed anyway. So, the nutrients stay in your tank. Then, the ammonia/ammonium hits your rocks, and the periphyton on the rocks consumes more ammonia and urea. Periphyton is both algae and animals, and is the reason your rocks change color after a few weeks from when they were new. Then the ammonia goes inside the rock, or hits your sand, and bacteria there convert it into nitrite and nitrate. However, the nutrients are still in your tank. Also let's not forget phosphate, which comes from solid organic food particles. When these particles are eaten by microbes and clean up crews, the organic phosphorus in them is converted into phosphate. However, the nutrients are still in your tank. So whenever you have algae or cyano "problems", you simply have not exported enough nutrients out of your tank compared to how much you have been feeding (note: live rock can absorb phosphate for up to a year, making it seem like there was never a problem. Then after a year, there is a problem). So just increase your nutrient exports. You could also reduce feeding, and this has the same effect, but it's certainly not fun when you want to feed your animals :)
If you're trying to remove both nitrates and phosphates together, large water changes are a great way of doing this, especially on small to medium sized aquariums where the water volume is smaller.
My question is how long can the hair algae last… I’ve been dealing with it for a year… decided to use my old ro/di unit … now I’m know the di part needs to be changed but the RO membrane should still be good so I don’t see how that’s letting any organic matter through… no I don’t have a meter 75 gallon tank only have one damsel and one clown lost my beautiful long fin clown , beautiful purple rose tip and a gobbie …. Been a hobbies of salt and fresh for 16 years but never really got serious… I’m ready to start getting serious and have pretty tanks …
We don't have a video specifically covering that subject. That said, you have a couple different options when it comes to ich outbreaks in a reef tank (since you can't use medications with your corals in inverts). Option 1 is to focus on good water quality and nutrition. Ich isn't necessarily a death sentence and fish can fight it off naturally if they have good water quality and the nutrition necessary to keep their immune systems strong. We usually suggest soaking the food in a supplement like Selcon if you decide this is the direction you'd like to go. Option 2 is to remove the fish and put them in a medicated QT tank. Copper is usually the medication of choice for ich. This can be stressful on the fish, so while a lot of reefers jump to this step, sometimes option 1 is actually the best course of action.
Love your videos Mate, I have a question: you said you removed your nitrat - phosphate and then you got dino ect .. then you suggest at the end remove the nitrate-phosphate 🤔 I have 0.07 phosphate and 0 Nitrate and green algae ... i tought I must add nitrat and bring it up to 3-5 to make it ballanced ... im New to Salt water , and my tank is also "new" well its already 6 month old ... could you help what is tje right step then ? Dont want to get dinos ty
A lot of reefers report dinos when their nitrates and phosphates are at undetectable levels, like you've mentioned. NeoNitro is a great product to help raise your nitrates without raising phosphates, since your phosphates are already at a good level.

Just wondering if you considered that your nitrates & phosphates were TOO low which can weaken bacteria on surfaces and the gha can just occupy the surface using light to grow & lowering them even more allowed the dinos who love love love zero nitrates to explode. ? Happened to me.. ran out of very nutrient rich diy frozen reef chili after starting a new demanding job and just threw in acfew pellets every other day.. and it went zero and all Hair broke loose.! I had a 125 gallon seahorse tank for a year and a half. About six months ago all the seahorses died. I decided to convert the tank to a reef tank instead of trying to seahorses again. I am starting to have a problem with hair algae and diatoms. The diatoms are horrible they are all over the sandbar and some on the lower rocks. This tank has been set up for two years. Will the diatoms go away also, even though the tanks been set up this long?
Diatoms in an established tank are unusual. I would suggest doing an image search for dinoflagellates in saltwater aquariums to see if that might be what you're dealing with instead.
You guys may think I’m crazy but what can I do to get rid of CORALINE ALGAE ! I HATE the stuff and it’s like concrete. Because of it I’m probably going back to fresh water .
That's a tough one because once it takes hold, it's hard to stop it since it thrives in the same environment as our corals. Some clean up crew like urchins may help a tiny bit, but you're still going to have to deal with some manual removal.

Maybe its silicate in the water ? Had in my Freshwater system and tanks till I found out I have silicate problems
