Simply, this is the most IMPORTANT information you have done in a complete video. Perfect for mixing. It's the mundane work I needed to see. Thanks

Its validating to watch this... so much of what we do is in a vacuum... but this is very similar to my prep. I like your volume riding on toms. Im going to steal that... is that the 14 mm at 32:16? I so close to going full Sony and picking up that lense.

It’s one of my favorite tracks! Yes, the up close shots were with the 14 mm. And all the rest were with the 24 mm F1.4 Such a ridiculous set up! Thanks for watching my dude!

Hey! Really cool video, love it!! but something died inside me watching how you inactive and hide. Maybe this could help you... When you have the tracks selected you could press shift + alt and right click the channel name and select "make inactive and hide"

Awesome, we have a very similar approach to starting with the mix. Getting the low end sitting right, drums and bass, then the mid range, acoustic instruments, electric guitars, keys/ synths. Last but not least the high end, vocals, obviously I’m generalizing. Every single instrument will have low, mid, and high end depending on the context of the mix, but it’s good to hear we have a very similar approach to mixing.

Your approach and mine are quite similar when it comes to mix prep, except for the fact that I do use color coding as it helps me visually to quickly identify the elements in the mix as well as a template that saves me the time to create intricate routing.
When I prepare a song for mixing I do all of this in a separate session and the mix session is a fresh one where I dump the files into.
There are no other files from the production, only the final takes that have been chosen for the mix.
It was very entertaining to see your process!
    Thank you for sharing.

in the fade window you can deselect "adjust existing fades" and then you can just grab the whole session at once without altering what's already there. big time saver ;)

Hey Colt, Are you gonna make a "Checklist type thing" that we can download? I got your " mixing checking" from awhile back it's freakin amazing!! Thanks Colt!!! Thank you for what you do!! I'll work for for ya!! in a heartbeat lol! I am in college for music production getting my Bachelors Degree.

Nice cleanup details! However, I clean Toms up by cutting all bleed out on the Tom tracks between hits & then fade. Funny, I have been setting up my track ordered in the exact order for years! Makes perfect sense to me. Lol

  • @GdpJapan

There it goes Colt putting a sound effect with his mouth to each action and singing small jingles or BGMs, just the same way I do unconsciously. lol
By the way, the color coding thing in my case is basically that I'm color blind as one out of 15 males is as well. Recently PT has even there color code stripes on the I/O boxes on top of the faders. I'm concerned that it will eventually become a standard thing to do and ppl with give me color coded sesssions but poorly chosen names for the I/Os and channels assuming I'll know what it is. Color coding should only be allowed if everything has been named properly before. A male out of 15 is a lot of people after all.

Colt, I have no idea how you work with a monotone color sequence. That requires too much reading on my part. 😅 I like to color by numbers. I also use Cubase over Protools, so...
I have Protools for clients that send me Protools sessions. They turn into wav files and are imported into the DAW of my choice.

Thank you for taking the time to share all of this
How do you proceed for wet fx when you are preping the session for yourself ? Do you mix within the same session or are you exporting all the tracks and beginning with a new session ?

Great video and it's great to see that my prep workflow is very similar to yours. Question - if you receive tracks from a client recorded at a different studio that you are mixing and you find that the overall volume levels of each track are very low, will you normalize them and if so, what what level do you normalize to?

I see that you used Elastic Audio and edited a lot of those tracks. I know you have done a video showing you doing some editing but could you possible talk a little more in depth about time editing all instruments. I have never been able to use elastic audio on anything except Tambo without having big obvious artifacts. Im kinda baffled on how people use this stuff transparently. Im over here stuck in pure manual editing and need o rope thrown down.

  • @Willigrow

Man I don't get how some of you engineers say you mix like 500 songs a year, two songs a day or whatever... yet you do this long-ish mix prep, manually gating drums (!!!) etc... You go on a bunch of coffees with clients, and run a youtube channel... do you just not sleep, or are 2/3 of those songs some simple electronic stuff that is mixed in 2h and done?
