Cattle farmers out west should appreciate the government welfare they get instead of trying to Welsh on paying their grazing fees. Wish I could lease ground for about 20% of what it would cost in the private sector.

@@adrianashilling2573sure you got the land. Now how about the fencing materials, the cattle themselves or the crops. The machines (atv, trucks, trailers, bobcats, etc). The vet and meds for the heads, the feed, the electricity and other utilities, and don’t forget your stuff too; house, clothes, food, etc. It’s never been easy for them. You’re either a poor hand or lucky enough to work/ connect (or be born into) a wealthy and successful cattle family. Still isn’t cheap or easy life.

Not only do cattle have cloven feet (like sheep or goats; two toes), but they also do not have upper teeth, they have an upper palette (plate). This makes it harder for them to graze down close to the ground. UNLIKE, wild horses which have upper and lower teeth, can graze plants down to dirt, and also a single hoof. Apparently the environmentalist is ignorant or bent on spreading lies. Either way, he is lying to the public.

Ramona, describes at 1:15 what you need to do in the USA: free range grass fed cattle, and not feed lot corn fed cattle. The first provides nutritious healthy beef that allows the animal to have a good life and ultimately a good death. By feeding the American people corn fed beef the system encourages poor nutrition, sets up medical issues for your citizens and I suppose greater profits for your drug companies and medical industry. I have met many American ranchers and have a great respect for them, their values and their way of life.

That environmentalists has no clue what hes talking about. As a 4th generation farmer I can say cattle have the same foot as buffalo's and bison. Look up the definition of bovine. Also a cows mouth in the front only has teeth on the bottom which make them much more suitable for grazing grass because they leave about 1 to 2 inches of grass left when they graze. Unlike a horse who has front teeth on top and bottom which allows them to pinch grass off or pull it up roots and all leaving nothing but weeds in a pasture.

In this video they relate to the hard work. I ask.....what work ? Do they create their own work or what ? They dont fence the cattle. Allow them to run free...brand them so at the end of the year they know whos cattle are whos. Its the law. I know......because I do have stock cows now. There is almost nothing to it ! These rancher / farmers are not there when the calves are born.....in case a cow has problems. Most times they dont even know where the cows are ! They are "using" public owned land. That sun still sets in the west
But that old trail is asphalt now
Baked by the sun hot and dry
The sounds of hoofs have passed
Herds of buffalo graze no more
    Barbwire strung along
The fence post passed like a picket fence
As the truck tires whine on
The sweetgrass has all but gone
The Mesquite is tall and thick
    Prickly Pear covers the prairie
    The Longhorns have gone
A saddle all covered in dust
    The moth-riddled blanket flaps
    Riding quirt amiss
Old spurs hung on a wall
On a post hangs a leather belt
With a holster cracked and rotting
    That old hogleg turned brown
    Brass all green
The lassoing cowboy is no more
    That broad hat tipped back
    His shirt sleeves rolled high
    Jeans rolled double
    His hair thinned and gray
    High cheekbones darken
    Bull hide tough
    Hand scars a many
    With eyes squinting
    A straw chair leaned back
    Daydreaming
    No more round ups
That last ride was long ago
With a rolled cigarette on his lip
His words in a low key
That sun still sets in the west

The precursors of the American cowboy were the Mexicans who raised cattle in the area of present-day Texas, when it was Mexican territory, before the annexation to the United States, their lifestyle and work was inherited from Mexicans who lived in the current Texan territory .
California also had skilled men on horseback, according to Richard Henry Dana who wrote a book about that region in 1840 when it still belonged to Mexico. As described:
When they go on long journeys, they ride a horse until they tire and grab another, pull the mount and the bridle over it, and after exhausting the animal, they take a third, and so on until the end of the trip. There are no better riders like Mexicans in the world.

Cattle do have cloven feet unlike he claims. Cattle only graze on one spot all day if it's the only spot of grass to eat period. He compares grazing on public land to welfare but welfare is free while these ranchers pay a fee per head per month. So he must have just not looked into that either. The American Bison or buffalo and domesticated cattle both come from the Bovidae family so if we went back a few hundred years ago huge herds of buffalo grazed a lot of those same areas and migrated from area to area similar to how a Rancher moves his cattle from pasture to pasture through the season's. I'm sure that they have different effects on pasture but to act like no animal anything like cattle ever roamed free and wild in the Americas is a bit of a stretch. I bet this guy thought by giving his opinion on this video he might sway others to the cause of keeping cattle off public land but didn't even bother doing a simple Google search for the points he raised. Just keep making it impossible for farmers and ranchers to make a living and see what kinda world we have then.

read the constitution people, it states specifically, that the government shall own NO LANDS. Why does it then? every bit of public land should be privatized, save a couple of national parks, and everything would improve dramatically, from wild life, to environment, to tax base, EVERYTHING.

i liked this video because of the fight of the ranchers not the apparent outcome of their effort ! Im guessing that most of the people that are hollering the loudest and those making the decisions will never walk, ride or fly over this land . Ranchers are not in the business of destroying the land . They are conservationists of the highest order . On another note , the gentleman speaking about the anatomy of the cow ; the hoof of the cow is same as a bison , split . I believe more people depend on the beef industry for their food than on his elk herd .

A few years after this video the 9th Circuit ruled against this rancher and then the Supreme Court refused to hear the case allowing the 9th Circuit's ruling to stand. In short the ranchers lost the legal battle. I have no idea what became of Wayne Hage Jr or his ranch after that. The articles about him online pretty much die after 2018 when they lost the legal battle.

On the Forest Service website it say, "The mission of the USDA Forest Service is to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of the Nation’s forests and grasslands to meet the needs of present and future generations." (www.fs.fed.us/about-agency/what-we-believe)The Forest Service is founded on conservation. It is not government welfare but in fact a way of providing for responsible use of the land to support the American economy so that we can have food on our plates, lumber to build houses, and rock and ore for our jobs while sustaining these wild places for continued use. What happened to this rancher was unfortunate and wrong. It was the duty of the Forest Service to provide for both the rancher and the elk.

Had to come back after watching this video last night. That “environmentalist” is the sort of person that gives environmentalists a bad name. He is wrong. A cloven hoof, cleft hoof, divided hoof or split hoof is a hoof split into two toes. ... Examples of mammals that possess this type of hoof are cattle, deer, pigs, antelopes, gazelles, goats and sheep.
Also Cattle and Bison (which used to roam in their thousands) have exactly the same type of hoof. The government are encouraging bison back. I’m in favour of a balance or one slightly in favour of wildlife but open range isn’t a handout to cattle ranchers, it’s a way to ensure the country is fed. Make ranches like this non commercial and they will die and you will have corporate owned ones only interested in money or you will have cattle raised mainly in barns and filled with drugs to make them fat……. Then you and your family eat those in the meat. Or as is being pushed for in Europe everyone will eventually be forced to be vegetarians.

Public lands are called public because they belong to the public which is us and not BLM.
The government should be a caring parent for the people and not a dictatorship.

isn't there that u can grow on that many acres??? crops suited to low rainfall and high sunshine??? flowers? something? does it have to be just cows? alpacas are in dry 'desert-y' Australia, so perhaps another option?... they have untold acres of private land already at their disposal. instead of going thru the courts[consuming capital/enriching lawyers], and just working the land for what suits, perhaps a better more sustainable outcome? surely must have had low debt if inherited: a big bonus starting point? and surely u could do something with those privately owned acres?????

Makes me angry the government is running out the older ways of living, for their own greed. People who dont agree with the ranchers dont have respect for the people that built this country. Maybe all those people should live somewhere else and keep their opinions to theirself.
