      I used to put myself off of mapex as I thought they were all thrown together , cheap China made drums. But it turns out all of the other companies are now making their drums in China/Taiwan with a healthy profit Margin on their premium priced kits. And every couple of years they stick a ‘revolutionary’ new piece of hardware on them to keep the prices nice and high. I’m going to be going with mapex from now on as their prices are competitive , like all drums should be!

    I have never paid attention to Mapex Drums so I must admit these snare drums sounded better than I thought, especially for the price. If I had to pick one that sounded like it was versatile enough to be on the snare stand for the entire gig it would be the Atomizer.

      I'm a Tama fanboy through and through, but I have more Mapex snares in my collection than anything else. I normally use a 13x6 brass master but I just picked up the (recently discontinued) Matt Halpern signature and was promptly blown away by it. Never had such an easy time dialing in such a delicious tone before.

  • @MikeLuke
    @MikeLuke 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    1. Thanks for this video. The level of work and love to detail you guys put into your content is second to none. 🙏
    2. Mapex snares seem to become a go-to choice. And they really show that you don’t need to spend much more than 400-600$ on a pro sounding snare nowadays. Everything above like all those Sonor, Gretsch or DW are truly amazing, but in the end more a level of collector’s items.
    3. This video again showcases that the drum
    head and the tuning contribute so much more to a sound than the shell or material itself.
    4. Having said that, I often find myself to like snares that are tuned counterintuitive to get best results: tuning a small drum rather low and fat, big snares rather high.

    • @mikoajkowalczyk3374
      @mikoajkowalczyk3374 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      4. This is not really counterintuitive at all, there's more to a snare than just size. I own a Persuader like the one in the video and it just works so much better in medium-high range. It just sits there SO nicely. I find myself going to the 14x5.5 aluminium for the low end if i need it.
      Which is the opposite for a very similar hammered brass snares, such as the Gregg Bisonette dixon one, i tried it in a shop and it was an absolute monster tuned low, but quite bad high. Both same sizes, both hammered brass with nickel on top. Guess the rims and extra ventillation that the Persuader has made all that difference.

    Wowww...Thanks a million for this video!! Always great vids posted by your team! What I like is that you show it with PA and room-mics which gives me the best image on how it will sound acoustically and through in ears over the PA. I was intended to go check out the DW Black nickel over Brass before seeing this vid. That made me doubt cause the Metallion sounds amazing. Yesterday went for a test in store and...bought the Mapex which I preferred above the DW. Mapex does it again!! They're real competitors against the big brands with their price/ value! Now they have to work on their image! Cause...they've been making great sounding stuff for years (had an Orion set which sounded sublime!) but their marketing and esthetics....arrgghhhhh... that big black logo..especially with the suspension type on the toms on the new Saturn...that's a bigggg NOOOO imo!!!

    I currently own 9 Mapex BP snares and a birch/walnut Saturn that matches with one of my kits. Most of which are similar to some of the new snares. The Phatbob, Heartbreaker, Wraith, 13” Cherrybomb, and Stinger. Then I have some older ones with die cast hoops. 14x5.5 Birdseye maple, 14x6.5 Aluminum, 13x5.5 Brass and a 13x5.5 Phosphor Bronze. Great work from DCP and Mapex.
    I have played Mapex kits for 20 years starting with a Mars 5 piece and now a 6piece MPro. The bass drums and toms are killer but the stock snares and floor toms not so much. I went with a Yamaha Tour Custom snare instead. Mapex do best bang for the buck imho. Of this new range I like the first versatile classic snare and the copper one.
    I just can't get on with those hairless cats or dogs, they freak me out, even though I am bald too😆

    I like the Cyrus the best! What a great drum! They all sound good though. I have an older Mapex "Brass Cat" snare, which is similar to these. I really like it because it's very solidly built. I like the snare throw off a lot, and the extra tensioner on the other side. That's a useful thing to have. I like the Sonic Saver hoop too. It's kind of like a die cast hoop in that it focuses the sound a bit and makes for a nice rim shot without biting into your sticks. Overall, I like my drum because it sounds great and has some high end features but doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

    It Sounds a lot thicker than what it is, I don't know about in person but on video it's the winner. Anyway as a drum nut myself I want to say, Thanks for the time an effort you guys put into making these videos. Rock on Brother 🤟

    Metallion and Predator sounded amazing for the metal drums! Again, solid in all tuning ranges. The copper shell of the Predator was drier sounding than the Metallion.

      @@totigerus This bothers you? Seriously? Sad. Okay, so if I'd said "Yikes! My wife used to work in TV, so I know you had to shoot a lot of footage to get 45 minutes worth of usable video and I know you had to spend a considerable amount of time in post production editing it and all that, so this was a labor of love," that would have been acceptable to you? Or "Yikes! I can't believe an obviously approving comment on a great video somehow raised the hackles of someone who is, apparently, overly-sensitive?" Stay safe and healthy, Totigerus.

    Man... it's hard to beat brass shells if you're looking for a metal snare. I love the sound of those brass snares in the medium tuning range. The copper snare was killer in the high tuning range. In fact... it sounds very similar to my Mapex hammered stainless steel snare from about 10 years ago. I have no clue why they stopped making those precious metal snares. Mine is phenomenal.

      I have a Mapex snare that no one seems to be able to identify. it is a fifteen by 3 1/2 inch, hammered finish, chrome finished snare. I took it to the guitar center, and sam ash and the only thing that I learned was that according to the serial numbers they thought it may be an early production model or a prototype.. it was no series name on it, only the Mapex badge with a serial number. any clues?

      @todds6048 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@brotherhubbardmusic... no... I have no clue. I don't think I've ever seen a 15" in person. That's pretty cool though. How do you buy snare wires for it? That's not something you see every day.

    I've been hunting for an aluminum shell snare alternative to the overpriced Supraphonic LM402. Heard that Mapex came out with the "Atomizer" and was intrigued. Watched this video and thought "wow - that's a very good sounding drum!" And its not even a spun-aluminum shell like most of its competitors (Pearl Sensitone, Yamaha Recording Custom, Tama Starphonic). Now I'm torn between the Yamaha Recording Custom and this Mapex Atomizer. I already own a Mapex Black Widow 14"x5" maple snare and I'm convinced that Mapex's secret sauce is their 3.0mm thick Sonic Saver hoops, which are nearly as rigid as diecast but much easier on the wrists and really make snare drums sound amazing.

    Awesome video! Since I really liked (or still like) the Sledgehammer from the older Mapex Black Panther series, I'm really digging the Persuader. But I noticed that the only things that changed are the Hardware and the fact that there are more vents, am I right? It's the same material, same shell depth, diameter and thickness.
