Hermann Prey knows the character so well!!! He gave a hell of a performance at the age of 62! His Papageno always hits the right charisma, I think Mozart himself would have been pleased to have him sung the original!
Ahhhh, Hermann Prey. I was fortunate enough to hear him sing Die Winterreise here in Finland, one of his very last performances. But still, most of all, I love his opera roles
Oh my ... this was supreme. Perfect diction and style, and a wonderful performance by a man who obviously knows the character Papageno well. Indeed I can't imagine Mozart would wish for any better. I'm hoping to sing this song soon -- I just have to learn the German phrasing (which is no easy task since I don't actually know how to speak German, though I think it's a wonderful language), and arrange for some friends to provide the alternate, smaller-scaled version of the accompanying music.
OUTSTANDING performance, as part of the Metropolitan Opera's celebration of 25 years of the New Met at Lincoln Center on opening night of the 1991-1992 season in September of 1991. Even almost 40 years after his operatic debut, Hermann Prey can still sing this very, very well - ably abetted by James Levine's conducting and the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra's playing. And back in the first Met season at Lincoln Center (1966-1967), Hermann Prey sang Papageno in the first performances (most of them that season, I think) of the brand-new, wonderful production of DIE ZAUBERFLOTE, staged by Gunther Rennert and with sets and costumes designed by Marc Chagall. That season marked the first time since the 1910s that DIE ZAUBERFLOTE was performed at the Met in the original German (it was performed, quite successfully, in an English translation in the 1940s and 1950s and early 1960s). Thank you very much for sharing this with us - although I wish that the aspect ratio of the clip were that of the video release and not "scrunched."
Warum musste er so früh von uns gehen ?:( Ruhe in Frieden. Es war im erstem Augenblick ungewohnt , da ich ihn sonst nur aus italienischen Opern kenne ☺
Damn, Hermann's voice becomes even better with time!.. I never tire of hearing his performances!
