Thanks for posting this, I recognised nearly all the pleasure boats in the film, i.e. Pride of Paignton, Pride of the Dart, Torbay Prince, Nomad, (In the first scene.) The red launch in Brixham was the Restless from Teignmouth, and lastly the open launch Our Rosalie on her mooring in Torquay, then owned by Fred Ould. I bought this boat and ran her for a few years in the 1980's. I spent the summer of 1969 on Pride of Paignton, and Pride of the Dart was my first command in 1973. Thanks again for the memories.
Thanks, my mom and dad took me to Torquay in the late 60s to the late 70s , seeing those days again brought back many great memories of my parents and times spent with them in around Torquay. Once again Thank you.
GGGGGGGGGGreat to see this footage , almost fell off my chair when i saw MYSELF sat in the Stocks near the beginning of the film , we have still pictures of our many visits to Torbay , not sure who the lad on my left is with the dark hair . now shared with my family . Films like this are like gold , just brilliant to see , thanks TOPCAMERAMAN
@@eddt430 Hi edd , no idea who took the footage as i was only about 6 or 7 , i emailed top cameraman a few years ago with the text you see above . the video brought back so many happy memories infact , me and my family are now doing the same thing and visiting Torbay every year (from Manchester) , stayed at Grange Court , Waterside, Beverly and Louville, which has now been built on . Happy days i often wonder where the lad next to me in the video is ... :~}
Cheers for this, excellent stuff. It brought back lovely memories. I used to spend my summer holidays in Torquay in the sixties. My two aunts ran a guesthouse there in Parkhill Road, I was a very lucky lad. My Dad had some old 8mm film of our holidays there but sadly it's been lost, much like the old charm of Torquay I think.
My grandfather settled in Teignmouth on return from S. Africa......his origin was Scotland......so as a family, my father drove 500 miles to visit his dad in the early sixties......so this film brings back so many happy memories of my childhood and into my teens...last visiting as a singleton early 70's before returning later with my own family...to beautiful Torbay. Great film!
An absolutely amazing array of film. Torquay, Brixham and Cockington alike aren't quite the same. I only remember Torbay as it were in the 90s but it's a great shame this film doesn't reflect the place anymore. Thanks.
I remember the stocks!.... and the model village and a couple of other things..... when I visited it would have been around 76 ish..... the memories. :)
Always nice to see how things used to be. Truth is Torquay has some awful areas and it's share of Saturday night lager louts. But it's still a lovely harbour (town centre is grim) and the whole place is full of the most awesome trees. One point, the lady feeding the seagulls would be frowned upon today as these birds are a menace who will snatch your kebabs and chips away!
Beautiful, a time when Torquay was an idyllic town before the druggies ruined the town and the parking wardens will fine you if they're bored. So sad to see what has become of Torquay now
Thanks for posting this. Used to spend holidays in Torquay as a child. It's just as I remember it. Vibrant and idyllic and fun. Cockington, Babbacombe, Torre Abbey Gardens, Brixham... Fantastic!
I still go to Torbay every year for a week, and have to say that I haven't noticed it to be filled with crime, drug addicts etc... Always surprised that there are always so many Tory posters up, if you go when there is an election, as there doesn't seem to be much work there other than seasonal... But it's still very beautiful, and all the buildings and streets look the same today as they did in this footage! Amazing!
I'm just wondering if anyone knows any one who was related to the owners of the Pembroke Hotel on meadfoot road , there was joint holders called Bloggs and Baxters . Just curious. Thanks
The inner and outer harbour Torquay, The ornamental gardens Torquay, Brixham harbour (Golden Hind replica), Cockington Village (I think? Sequence with the horse and cart) Babbacombe model village, The Oldway Mansion (Singer house) & Gardens. Yup they are all still here pretty much along with the odd thatched cottage. As for crime and drug addict, you'll find both in any town, but I'd prefer to live in Torquay than say, Birmingham, London, Manchester or even Margate.
The seagulls were so much better behaved back then! No politely waiting to be given a crumb now. They will just snatch any bag they think may have food in & fly off.
It's a shame they bulldozed the place and built a mosque on the rubble. It's political correctness gone mad - of course you're not allowed to say that according to lesbian Guardian readers.
A simpler calmer time...before the madness of how this country is now.. these people would never believe the troubles governments have brought to our land.
Really delightful images and sound of Torquay as it was. We should be cheered that much us still recognisable. Thank you.

Hi, what a great film. We would love to use parts of this in a Museum in Cockington.
Would this be at all possible?
