Rich, I had to drive one (original drivetrain, only mod was a nice exhaust) to appreciate them. When I hear someone compare their acceleration to modern Camrys and Accord I just laugh. The driving experience is so many levels above modern FWD sedans it's ridiculous
Yea, agreed, driving an handling but, when your taking speed an performance, it is what it is, it's a old sports car. They will handle great but, if they can't back it up with a motor, today, it's why people compare it. No question I have driven one, no question fun to drive but, not fast at all in todays standards. Even my daily driver has a 0-60 in 5.9, and that is a sedan...
@@TheCoolDave I know exactly why people turn their nose up at the numbers on paper. But if you hit a nice curvy backroad with lots of hills and sharp sweeping curves (like we have in my area) and no amount of extra power is gonna help you. 0-60 times mean nothing on roads like that. I was impressed by the NSXs nimble, light, and communicative handling. The great view of the road, the feel of the shifter, and the sound of the engine behind me. All those weak numbers on paper never entered my mind.
Yep. From 2010-2014 I owned a 1986 Lotus Turbo Esprit. 2400 lb car with a 215 bhp turbo-four in it. Its closest competitors at the time were the Ferrari 328 GTS and the Porsche 944 Turbo and it was arguably the better car of the three. Nowadays EVERYTHING has more power than that, and most any FWD sedan can probably smoke the old Esprit in a drag-race, but it wasn't built for dragging and will STILL out-handle most modern cars. It was probably the closest thing I'll ever experience to driving a F1 car (I know, its FAR from being an actual F1 car, but still as close as I'll get! LOL). It was a light, fast, pure and intuitive driving experience. The thing steered as if by thought and didn't fear any curve the road could throw at it. It was far and away the best melding of man and machine I've ever experienced. How many super-heavy modern cars can you really say that about?

Not only did Elon's hair grow back but his teeth got perfect. Ruining the car is a ludicrous hypothesis. It wasn't a pristine, collectable NSX. It was a high miles, modified car that had been K-swapped. The car had minimum value. These types of transplants can't be judged. None of this is about cost. It is something he wanted to do. I am an automotive engineer with EV background. An EV is not better than a ICE driveline. It is just different. Some believe its worse for range, long term battery reliability and charging inconvenience aka time. This is done for the technical challenge...because he could and well done to Sevon for accepting the challenge and succeeding. Most of us would rather have an original, unmolested NSX. I sure would. Pretty much any car can be converted to an EV.
Maybe you're new to Rich Rebuilds but your 'ludicrous hypothesis' is what drives his channel, and many other youtube channel. It's called light-hearted entertainment.
After thinking about tesla swaps/ builds for myself I've realized swapping you're limited by battery location, size, & weight.. if you're removing components & using luggage space you for new ev components you're stuck trying to adapt to those shapes. Therfore battery size, voltages, amperage & power output are determined by your battery specs
@@Onewheelordeal I mean, why let a guy have dreams? Everybody has to start someplace. Show us your bad ass ride? Both of you. You know, instead of just insulting people?
Seeing an NSX rolling nearly silent is eerie. It boggles the mind. But like I've said before, an EV swap is better than letting a beautiful car sit unloved and un-driven.
Being that he got it with no engine, the fact that he got it to drive with anything is an improvement. I like most EV swaps that I read about. (I haven't seen one in person yet.) I have little patience though for the less-than-adequate battery packs many are using. Usable range matters, even on a short-trip daily driver. I want more TH-camrs to press the EV conversion owners about how much ACTUAL range they have seen so far. In my mind the coolest appearing EV swap is useless with less than 100 miles of usable range. It's a glorified trailer queen.
@@rsmith02 And you would be the exception. My last three jobs were 25, 35, and 13 miles one way. Also, it's a known fact that you only use 70% of rated EV range without damaging the battery pack long term. For daily use, never charge above 90%, and never discharge below 20%. That leaves 70% POTENTIAL range. If it's really cold or hot the battery management system works harder to maintain 70-degree F battery temperature. You may also be using heat or A/C, wipers, lights, radio, and occasional quick acceleration. All of that eats range. That's why an early Nissan Leaf with 80 potential miles of range wasn't practical for many people.
Some Nissan engineer committed seppuku that they never developed the Mid-4 type II concept that so much of the NSX's design elements were clearly stolen from.
It's great seeing all these talented people working on EV conversions. And the market for EV components is simply amazing these days. 20 years ago it was lead-acid batteries and salvaged DC motors. Obviously they were shit and nothing like today. Now we have cool EV conversions and most importantly a new generation of mechanics and EV enthusiasts who are building and learning and sharing. The next Carroll Shelby is out there somewhere.

I love this build. One thing he probably doesn't know yet is that the NSX eats tires in less than 10k miles. When he gets tired of the $2,000 tire changes, he'll let you have it cheap. :D
@@patrickvanvlooten The wheels on this car are set up in such a way that it makes the car drive like it's on rails, but that has a price with the tires. I only know this because a good friend has a 1992 and when he uses the Z rated Michelin Sport tires, they're done in 8-10k miles. I'll have to ask him if he knows he can adjust the alignment and get more miles...
@@RealRickCox I had mine set to the later spec alignment when it wasn't lowered like it is now, my tyres are still okay and well over 10k miles on there. I believe it's the 1994 or 1995 spec alignment. Tell your friend to check the NSX wiki on Prime, the numbers are on there. The main problem is the toe in on the rears and once you lower the car also the camber. I'm on a very agressive alignment now that my car is lowered and I'm certain these tyres won't last me very long. The trade-off is that the car now drives on rails which it didn't when I drove the later spec alignment.

I actually disagree with his comment about the battery packs being on top of the motor. I think with a nice batter cover being made up with like carbon fiber or aluminum to show through the hood window would be a pretty cool touch.
The idea of an EV and "super light" do NOT exist in cars now unless you're talking about the concept electric F1 cars. Strapping 1k additional pounds of batteries on a Lotus (where do you put them?) is the opposite of the whole idea of what the car is.
This would be comparable to a Lotus Elise with electric motor which we already have:. Tesla Roadster 1.0. I want to see that, Rock Cox. If you do it, email Rich to go film a special on your car.
This car needs the following: Molded Roof Intake for cooling. Gen 2 or 3 Racing Spec. Slightly wider wheels and tires for grip after the added battery weight. A better throwback style shifter. Lower front end ducting for brake and front mounted battery cooling. It’s a good start to this project. I Love How He Avoided the Pricing Question every time it was brought up.
There's a valuable lesson here. Never admit anything on camera. He bobbed and weaved the "How much did you pay?" question like a man that told his wife he paid one price while really paying about 3x that.. He might have a future in politics if this EV stuff doesn't work out for him.
Yeah he was like "I want everyone to see that beautiful motor" and I'm just like, dude, it's a metal cylinder. It's not even as interesting to look at as a gas engine. Shoehorn some batteries in there!
This doesn’t bother me as much as when Honda crushed the NSX at the French Camp training center. It was there for years as a training vehicle and we tried to save it but Honda said it wasn’t certified for US roads and crushed it rather than sell it off.
It's Waaaaay better! He will eventually add batteries to that space above the motor though when the newness wears off. Having the batteries behind in the boot/trunk is adding too much weight behind the wheels. However it looks like this will progress into a fully realised conversion. And yes. It's VERY much better.
I dig it. I'd say as long as all the comfort items work and the weight gets balanced better, it's a great build. I want to EV swap a gen2 MR2 at some point
Why is Rich ragging on the NSX? Are there really people out there who are saying it's faster than modern sports cars (or regular cars)? I owned an NSX and I loved it, but not because it was the fastest car out there. I think that's pretty obvious for anyone who knows even a little bit about cars. This swap is super fun BTW. The real sinners are those people who put crazy bodykits and 100 stickers/decals on the car.
As he said. It's for him and I love that! I'd love to see it on the track vs a decently modified original one. The electric motors can really help show how good the NSX is, aside from it's high revving vtec

These swaps are undoubtedly cool. I'm only 2:11 in but I can tell I'll love it. However, I've always loved 80's and 90's cars that look and drive as though they just came out of the factory. There's something so satisfying about a car that has been untouched for 30 years. Regardless, still great! Edit: It came with no engine so I don't feel as bad
My favorite NSX video is Aryton Senna test driving the debut NSX in a pair of loafers and he drove the absolute wheels off it proving how capable the car was at a track.
Of course I am sad to see this unit go. But the engine was already out of it, so... What future could it ever have? Thus, I am honestly happy to see this move! Not only because it will be another NSX body going around showing how cool Honda can be, but also another great car showing how awesome electric cars can be when done right.
Funny. It's the opposite for me. Turning a fun (legendary JDM) car Into a tone-death and soulless short range dad car is what makes me hate technology. The less electronics and the more hydraulic/mechanical systems the better. It's all about handling, feeling and enjoyment etc.

Yeah it was already ruined when they pulled the original motor so anything goes at this point. Worst case scenario he sells it in the future and someone swaps a built NSX motor back into it with some heavenly sounding ITBs 😁!
I would only be mad at this build if it was a NSX in great condition.
Could of LS swapped it

it's a good start, but the batteries really need to go in the middle to preserve the handling
Second this, performance over internal looks. Cover the engine with a stack of battery packs and show us what this puppy is capable of. Looking forward to it.

He's happy and something cool and unique is being built. Additionally how many more people are going to get to see an NSX that never would without him driving this conversion around? All those factors add up to an awesome project that I'm happy someone is doing.
Still a k20 turbo swap will have been way better and still be Honda powerplant
K20 are cheap and can support 600hp in stock form and 1000hp with basic forged rod and piston
Well actually where I live there are more than a few Gen 1 NSX'S around that make nice gas engine sounds I have one. So no I don't think we need an electric one for that reason
That said I think this is 😎 and if he can get decent batteries for it and sorts out the weight distribution he might have a real terror on his hands. The original NSX'S gas engine was no power monster so an electric set up might really be a nice booster for it. As to the cost of the one here with a K swap in it I guess the most you would have to pay is 30k usd.

As a nsx owner. I love this, and it cracks me up. I can't wait to see it completed. The power wheels controller is gold!
when I think of an NSX, I truly don't think of it's powerplant. I think of it's style and chassis capabilities.
Now that you mention it yes you're right. I know what the NSX is but I don't know a single thing about its engine. Not even the number of cylinders.
The modern NSX is a V6 hybrid which makes it special but the old gen is just another V6.
Nobody thinks of the CA engine either from NA1 and NA2. K and B are far more popular
People care more about the sound that it makes vs performance in today's age.

Thanks for sharing, fun and interesting build. Since the final destination is a daily driver, he needs to figure out how to lift the front end on command, maybe airbags so he can clear obstacles in the road without messing up the front spoiler. Lovely car, I think the EV conversion really suits it, feels very stealth. Oh the jank factor is of the roof, hell yeah.
Rich, I had to drive one (original drivetrain, only mod was a nice exhaust) to appreciate them. When I hear someone compare their acceleration to modern Camrys and Accord I just laugh. The driving experience is so many levels above modern FWD sedans it's ridiculous
These are usually the people who only look at peak power numbers and nothing else. Nevermind that the Camry has a 600 lb weight disadvantage...
@@sketch242 Exactly.

Good investment, got him into a dead end marriage
Maybe you're new to Rich Rebuilds but your 'ludicrous hypothesis' is what drives his channel, and many other youtube channel. It's called light-hearted entertainment.
After thinking about tesla swaps/ builds for myself I've realized swapping you're limited by battery location, size, & weight.. if you're removing components & using luggage space you for new ev components you're stuck trying to adapt to those shapes. Therfore battery size, voltages, amperage & power output are determined by your battery specs
Nice placement of the batteries, I'm sure it didn't messed up with the handling AT ALL.
Nice grammar, I'm sure it didn't mess up the sentence at all.

Seeing an NSX rolling nearly silent is eerie. It boggles the mind.
But like I've said before, an EV swap is better than letting a beautiful car sit unloved and un-driven.
Are there more episodes with Stevon and Amber ?
Being that he got it with no engine, the fact that he got it to drive with anything is an improvement. I like most EV swaps that I read about. (I haven't seen one in person yet.) I have little patience though for the less-than-adequate battery packs many are using. Usable range matters, even on a short-trip daily driver. I want more TH-camrs to press the EV conversion owners about how much ACTUAL range they have seen so far. In my mind the coolest appearing EV swap is useless with less than 100 miles of usable range. It's a glorified trailer queen.
My commute was 5 miles. 100 mi. would be overkill for 90% of my driving.
I thought he said it came with a k series in it but he convinced the guy to keep the k to sell it to him for less?
that's like the least steep driveway I've ever seen and the front still scrapes the ground. He needs some air shocks to clear large curbs.
I mean he even had the back weighed down and it still happened. That's just funny.
and apparently it's his own driveway -- surprise crunch totally out of nowhere.
Some Nissan engineer committed seppuku that they never developed the Mid-4 type II concept that so much of the NSX's design elements were clearly stolen from.
It kinda hurt every time that beauty scraped the curb😧
It’s ok it’s just a wings west lip.

Only the early spec alignment eats rubber, later spec alignment will get you far beyond 10k miles. It drives totally different though!

I have a 1989 Lotus Esprit that I want to do a Tesla conversion on. It would be super light and could probably beat a Plaid on a drag strip.
probably untrue unless you swapped plaid-equivalent motors.
The idea of an EV and "super light" do NOT exist in cars now unless you're talking about the concept electric F1 cars.
Strapping 1k additional pounds of batteries on a Lotus (where do you put them?) is the opposite of the whole idea of what the car is.
the first 80s-90s reliable lotus would be something.
This would be comparable to a Lotus Elise with electric motor which we already have:. Tesla Roadster 1.0.

Slightly wider wheels and tires for grip after the added battery weight.

Lower front end ducting for brake and front mounted battery cooling. It’s a good start to this project.
