    I met Russ at the Musicmesse in Frankfurt, Germany soooo many years ago. He told me about how he approached I'm Like a Bird, it's so great hearing this story and have it demoed here today. And of course, on top of being a all-round MONSTER, the dude is an absolute gentleman. Cheers Russ :)

    This was an amazing lesson to watch, Russ Miller is a consummate professional both as a player and educator. As a long time teacher/player, I cannot stress enough how vital his concepts are to taking your playing to the next level. Just the brush exercise in the beginning is worth the price of admission. As an aside, those have to be some of the best sounding drums I have ever heard, especially the kick drum. Thanks Russ Miller and Drumeo for putting this content out there for all of us to learn from.

    What a great lesson. I really get so much from the more experienced guys that have worked within the industry like Russ. You can really trust what they teach, as you know they’ve learnt all this stuff the hard way and we get to benefit.
    Thanks for the wisdom! 😁

    18:20 nail on the head! Dancers feel every part of a move, it's not digital,
    Neil peart use to talk about introducing circular motion, I'm sure that did wonders for his feel and sence of time.

    WOW...this Russ Miller vid is 100% connection to to me...he said much better
    what I have believed and felt all summed in pocketplayer. The overlooked
    simplicity of a studio track, why Irv Coltlier is one of the greatest drummers
    few discuss, etc... Russ is WAY more deep than I ever imagined and after this
    bumped up to one of the best players around. He did what another excellent
    drummer tried on Drumeo which failed imo, trying to cram way too much
    data into the hour over Russ' relaxed flow and maturity. This dude is living
    at a very high level here. Those Mapex drums sound incredible.

    Russ has that positive energy and attitude only great teachers has. I'm big Weckl and Gadd fan, but as we talk about teaching-learning process I'd go with Mr. Miller for sure.

    • @Joesfosterdogs
      @Joesfosterdogs 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      he is a step ahead in personality...he talks without silly attitude and immaturity...he is extremely intelligent and disciplined but has a balanced social life as well which all comes to play...some of the more niche technical guys live in a cave over a balanced family man, and it shows in their playing.

    Totally agree that ultimately whatever you play MUST sound good, but going to have to disagree about it not being cool to build songs around rhythmic concepts. Remember, as long as it sounds good, there's nothing wrong with the inspiration and creative driver for a great song coming from an interesting rhythmic concept that you think is cool! You just have to remember not to stop with the rhythm, because a great song needs great melody, great use of space, great musicianship, etc.

    • @Joesfosterdogs
      @Joesfosterdogs 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      agreed...we are all at different maturity levels, but a lot of those types of compositions are not good which was his point...those with the maturity will make this a good song...if Tool tried this, it is going to be excellent because...they are excellent!

    • @henk-janwormgoor8497
      @henk-janwormgoor8497 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Drums/rhythm are the heart of a song . What is life or music without a heart? What is a heart without breath, without a body, without things to say and to do and without other people to connect with?

  • @pputnam100
    @pputnam100 ปีที่แล้ว

    No amount of chops can allow you to play FEEL like that..!! Damn that sounds and feels so freakin good...The internet full of guys with massive chops using them constantly, but Wow, guys like him, Jeff Porcaro, JR Robinson , Keith Carlock....

    Love the fill the space lesson. Really needed this. Excellent. I'm getting into pocket playing and it's not easy. Gadd said once you have to make yourself wait for the next beat. We tend to want to rush it a little. But you can start to drag as well. Not just time butbfeel. Finding that sweet spot condistantly. I am looking for help in developing this. This is a great help. Thanks!

    I have been following you for a long time and I have always found extremely interesting the lessons you propose to us. You have always invited great drummers who have enriched me even just seeing them play, but this time you have overcome !! I didn’t know Russ Miller (mea culpa !!!) and now I can candidly say that, for me, he represents the true essence of drumming. I hope Google translator has translated well what I wanted to write 😂. thanks from Naples (Italy)

    Russ is such an amazing musician and a great guy. I met him all the way back in 2004 when we both did clinics at PASIC. This video covers such important topics, if not THE most important topics to be aware of as a working drummer. It should have 8 million views instead of 80’ something! Perhaps put the word “fast” into the title?:)

  • @MichaelVLang
    @MichaelVLang 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    What Russ says about supporting the vocals is so important. The vocalist has the most difficult gig in the band, it's taxing and if the tempo is off, it can really mess with the meanings of the words, the phrasing. It has to be correct. The message the song is giving is why the song exists.

    • @henk-janwormgoor8497
      @henk-janwormgoor8497 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you are right and no ... otherwise the singer could do it all alone and a singer also needs musicians to support him or her. When do you hear the best music? (At drumclinics ...dont tell this at people who say they play an instrument, are musician or even are singers, composers or directors.)

      Music stores sell drum kits, percussion and instruments. A band has a drummer, a percussionist, musicians, a singer, a composer, a lyrics writer, a director, a sound engineer, a manager, .......... . So ...?? If all musicians, singers, directors, songwriters, lyrics writers, sound engineers, managers, ... become a drummer or percussionist ....... Yes we all like music, that feels and sound like music.
