- In 1361, away from the crowds and free from worries, the Italian writer Giovanni Boccaccio (1313-1375) completed the first version of his work called De Mulieribus Claris. Boccaccio continued rewriting this manuscript for over a decade until, shortly before his death in 1375, he had a definitive version, which compiles around a hundred female biographies. The writer chose women he considered exceptional, creating a work with a strong moralizing message through their stories.
In this video, we analyze Boccaccio's perspective on the feminine universe. Did Boccaccio intend to honour the women he admires, as he says in the prologue, or on the contrary, to indoctrinate the audience of "De Mulieribus Claris"?
