Wonderful video. My dad taught me how to sharpen chisels with a hollow ground. This seems to have fallen out of fashion for a number of TH-cam woodworkers. I had no idea you could do this for an ax. 69 years old and I still enjoy learning new things. Thanks very much.
I don’t think that there is an edge that’s quite like it, providing the steel quality is good!! With more brittle metals and spring steel, I probably wouldn’t hollow, or at least I’d create a decent flat-over-hollow style. I think that with precise hand sharpening chisel jigs becoming cheaper and widely available, more people are opting for them, but then they eventually get a Tormek anyways to save time… For the axe, it’s completely transformed my approach to carving. I used to teach people how to hand sharpen them, but using this method is just so precise and removes most of the human error that contributes to a rounded, convex bevel. Honestly, I love the ring of your axe very much. It was what appealed to me the most in addition to your immaculate tools, the descriptions you gave of them and your meticulous attention to detail. I also love black smithing which creates a similar ring when they are manufacturing something from iron or steel. Maybe you know of this already, but in Sweden there is a village called Torsång. Even though I might be incorrect, I have always liked to think the name meant Tor's/Thor's song, meaning the sound of his hammar, Mjölnir, which sounded like a song. The church in Torsång is also fascinating because when it was being built the locals demanded that there be a human looking image made to represent Tor out of bricks, which was placed at the top near the roof.
Thank you for this comment. There is something really satisfyingly specific about ringing tools. I wasn’t aware about this Swedish place. I haven’t really explored Sweden much. There is a beautifully interwoven wood carving slöjd culture there that I have been lucky enough to experience just a fraction of through meeting the most wonderful and generous of carvers from Sweden. I hope to someday visit for longer and teach there. I am now going to delve into the research of this particular place! I hope to find that their towns bell is actually a hammer on some wrought iron 😂

Torsång is located in Dalarna and if your Swedish contact (s) haven't mentioned it yet near/around the beautiful lake Siljan there are lots of handcrafters of all sorts. Specifically, you might also enjoy knowing about an amazing place that I dreamt of attending for many years but was unable to called Sätergläntan. It's like a dream come true there for all handy people and set in such an idealistic setting. You mentioned teaching and Sätergläntan is both a place one can learn or where one can work teaching others. The very best of luck to you! 🍀🌲✨🕯️
