I thought this on the PS video and it's still the same here. It's amazing how our eyes and minds are limited to what they see at the time they're seeing it. Those early 2000 games were SO realistic when they first came out, you thought they looked amazing, like real life, then the next game came out and you were blown away again... then ten years later the games are still blowing you away visually but those games you once thought were so realistic are now not nearly so. The same is with CGI in movies, The ORIGINAL Godzilla or King Kong was terrifyingly realistic in the mid 1900s but now it's like... puppets.
I rememer when Halo 2 came out it looked so epic and cool. And now looking back and comparing it to let's say Halo 2 anniversary it's clear how far it has gone.
DG Commando dont forget the movie JAWS. when i saw it in my childhood, i thought it was so real, then saw it again 2 years ago and i was like "whats this shit? nothing realistic at all" the power of illusion always breaks when you see a more powerful illusion played out
DG Commando Honestly I've lost that feeling of being blown away by graphics. I've seen some amazing tech demos, but have found all the new games to be pretty comparable to last gen.
Stephen Mulkey silent hills PT was the most realistic thing so far and other companies have taken notice, but when it can take 4 years or more to make a game you have to keep that in perspective. right now all the titles coming out where started long before the new consoles even came out. which is why the best looking games come out by the end of a consoles life. just wait until Xmas 2016 thats when you will start to really see the improvements.
No Bioshock? The lighting was amazing for the time with the silhouettes. The textures weren't so good but the style was amazing and not only made up for the textures,But hid what they lacked, since the style didn't require as much detail in textures since the shape and lighting were the main focus.

buzzooo21 I think his point, while poorly made, is that 1080p is the standard that consoles still can't meet consistently....10 years down the road. And PC's are moving over to 4k in the next 2-3 years or so. Accomplishing 1080p 60fps should not even be a bragging point now, but some companies still have to brag on each game that "succeeds" at it...*cough* Sony *cough* Microsoft *cough cough*...sorry.
I NEVER comment... NEVER!!! no video has interested me in anyway or stirred a comment out of me in the many years or watching TH-cam videos... So let this be an indication on how much the desire to comment on this video was... There are multiple reason why this simple 20 min video is one of best videos I think I've ever seen. The main reason tho? The commentary.... The way this guy talks with the way he is able to describe each games epic uniqueness is his own epic uniqueness is nothing short of epic. Just listening to this guy comment on each of these videos seems like he is promoting a mini commercial for each individual listed game as if it was aired during the last 10 mins of the super bowl. This is by far the best most descriptive commentary for a simple TH-cam video I have ever seen. Absolutely love the video. Great job.
Connor Feivor Mass effect was, the first game was published by microsoft studios before they were bought by E.A. There was a pc port eventually, but mass effect started with the xbox.
Connor Feivor Mass effect 1 was originally a Microsoft 1st party title. Dunno about Just cause, TBH they included a lot of crossplatform games on this list and I don't know why.
Great video. Though I don't know if it would have quite made the list, but Dark Void (2010) didn't necessarily break down any major barriers, it did have quite a nice feel to it when gliding around through canyons with a jetpack. That and the mixture between jungles and invasive alien machinery built into caves and cliff sides did look very good.
The Xbox was the most powerful console of it's time, but the Playstation already had a name for itself and it had Final Fantasy. That's why the PS2 sold better then the Xbox.
For the Love of God, please always make videos with only Mr. Deep voice announcer. That would be the man related to this video.(and many others you make) I watch all your videos Gameranx, Thank You! .....really, Thank You! But seriously, my brain cells decide to commit suicide every time I hear the lighter voice announcer. I have to physically reach for the remote just to turn it down. This is of course my opinion and will mostly likely stop here. But I have to say it; because damn Mr. Deep Voice you should be on CNN. Keep it up Gameranx! Good stuff!
Where is bioshock? the game's water effects were really really impressed, I mean, just when you land in the water at the beginning of the game and the seconds before you discover that the game has started, you can almost believe that there is a cut-scene. Another thing both Bayonetta and FF13 came out in 2010.
I remember the day I got Halo, was in Target with my dad browsing the selection as usual and the moment I looked at the cover...I said; "yea, I need that" and the rest was history.
How can anyone say GTA 5's driving is good? It's a disgrace compared to how GTA 4 felt. And, how could you not mention Hitman: Absolution? That came is fucking gorgeous.
Gta 4 driving felt like you were driving around in big metal boats with different skins. the only difference with one another is that every car had different top speeds. Gta 5 made the cars have their own feel, weight, traction, and turning distance. Each car feels different to one another. That even brought amazing custom races, and you could potentially play Gta 5 races as an eSport. Gta 4 was a great game, but the driving wasn't very great
Mankiller 1239 now you say that but everyone always picked the same three cars/bikes depending on the race, even on dirt the akuma decimates everything and I can't remember what it's called but that one with the spikey body work was unbeatable unless it was a race with ramps in which case you were probably going to clip the bottom with your bumper and go flying
Mankiller 1239 GTA 5's cars feel like pathetic little toys. GTA 4's had weight to them. You could SEE the suspension doing it's part in GTA 4. GTA 5? Cars are solid, pathetic little pieces of shit.

Ferman Sensei Bioshock's style is still one of my favourites, especially since they didn't rely on high quality textures. The lighting and style hid what the textures lacked and the objects still didn't require high quality textures anyway, so it still looks good today, and they didn't even mention it.
Ferman Sensei : "Halo 3: ODST" had the same graphics as "Halo 3". Why? Because it wasn't really meant to be a full game. It's more of a standalone expansion.
9:05 Bump maps were present on the Xbox in Halo2(can't recall earlier examples, atm) and Normal maps were first used(to my knowledge) in Chronicles of Riddick, Escape from Butcher Bay. Also, a really big technical achievement that isn't mentioned is that the Unreal Engine now supported instancing of meshes. This greatly changed the way levels were constructed/set dressed, and has had a huge impact on level design. Basically, it means that the memory impact of duplicating an object is negligible. Before, the footprint of placing two copies of one statue was essentially twice as much as having it once(3x for 3, and so on). This allowed for a pretty big leap in efficiency, as well as aesthetic direction. Now you could have a handful of extremely nice assets with a LOT of care put into them, then reuse them as you needed. It lets you use bigger textures on your assets, more complex materials, leaves more memory for lighting computations, and all sorts of other bells and whistles. Launch titles like Perfect Dark Zero(released just the previous year for the same hardware), *PALE* in comparison. It doesn't even look like it's for the same console. That's one of the reasons the general resolution of games took such a huge jump. It wasn't just the hardware, it was also the rendering techniques. Would have been a worthwhile thing to cover.
This comment is based on actual facts. Please be objective and not the typical console wars theme you tend to roll with; So Ive seen alot of people in the comments ask which has the better graphics. PS4 or Xbox One. To make it more clear I decided to write this essay :O but truth be told what you define is more visually pleasing is up to your eyes. Also I will try to be as objectivly as possible. Currently the PS4 holds the throne in console graphics. As evidence by the more graphical settings of both GTA V and Destiny. This simply does not mean the xbone version is ugly it just simply means the ps4 has more computing power to handle more on screen
Matt Fritz Not really as dx12 is still a software and not physical thing pushing out juice. The 50% more power is just benchmark settings. Meaning in 3Dmark and stuff like that. Actuall games will be harder to maximize to that efficiency. I aint saying an AAA exclusive games for xbox wont be able to reach somewhere near that goal but typical cross platform AAA games like ubisoft releases wont. Also most typically its a crossover between power between cpu and gpu (If I understood the data I have read correctly) meaning in not just graphics like pretty skin effects and shiny cars but most likely focused on complex simulations like huge draw distances or wave simulations in that pirate game. The dx12 simply kicks the xbox up a notch to the same league as the PS4.
This is like a cool trip down memory lane and remember what I was doing over the years as I played some amazing games. I still remember the first time I played Halo CE with my best friend co-op. I LOVED NFS: Hot Pursuit. I bought and still own Ninja Gaiden Black. Game was impressive at the time and still is. Halo 2 wasn't the first game I played online because I played on the PC before and had a few friends online, but it was a lot of fun and amazing to be able to talk to and play online with my real life friends after school/work online as if we were sitting right next to each other. I remember seeing GTA IV in the barbershop and everyone talking about picking it up that night. Even though Ryse had it's issues/complaints(repetitive), I thought it was a really good game and I would love to see a sequel. It looks Amazing! Gears Of War 1, 2, and 3 I don't think I've ever had more fun playing a game co-op since Contra on The NES or Streets Of Rage 1 and 2 on the Sega Genesis with my best friend. I've had so much fun playing Gears Of War 1, 2, and 3 co-op, Horde, and MP Guardian and Annex.
what i love about both the xbox and ps is that they both have that unique feel to them that keeps me playing games over and over sure people fan boy over one console over the other but that's up to them i think there both great consoles and i love the games on both
kornyfreakgames Because they spend so much time worrying about brand loyalty that they forget that in the end games are a form of interactive entertainment.
+Blue Hat Gaming It's not _just_ brand loyalty. Some people grew up with a certain thing, so they tend to stick with that thing, because they know what to expect from it.
+Minor Elite that would be brand loyalty. but I know what you mean, a lot of people could only get one platform and had to stick by it, not everyone was lucky enough to have options.
BUT CONSOLE GAMERZ DON'T CARE ABOUT GRAPHICS RESOLUTION IS JUST A NUMBER, FPS IS JUST A NUMBER!!1!!1!. Then why don't you play games on 15FPS and 360p? It's just a number...
+Abra Cadabra I still play my Sega Genesis 2, my n64 and PS2 frequently. I'd rather have a game with good graphics and fantastic story with great replayability over a graphically stunning looking game with a bad story and no replayablilty
butters900 Yes, the thing is now it's 2015 and you can get a game with good graphics, fantastic story and great replayability which ALSO HAS stunning graphics. If you play old consoles it's not my thing, but people buy Xbox Ones and PS4 and they still say "FPS JUST A NUMBARO REZ JUIST A NUMBERO GOOD GAMES WITH BAD GRAPHICS BEST" - then why don't they stick with their nintendo and PS2 consoles?
MUMUMUMUist Yes, but even so they buy the Xbox One and PS4 and they still face against which has BETTER graphics, while their only argument against buying a premade PC in 2015 for 400$ and buying games at 5$ a piece on steam is that GRAPHECZ DON'T MATTER FPS DOn"T MATTER.
That is false. It may look better because its 1080p squished into a small screen, but tbh if there is any handheld you should brag about its the 3ds and DS. Hands down the best handhelds ever made.
Thank you for the Xbox version. I actually discover this channel yesterday & I watched the evolution of graphics for PS4. I agreed with other comment, maybe give Nintendo a try next lol not that we play their games for the graphics but it'll be nice what this channel comes out.
Josh Beta lol they all look the same. the Wii's graphics are from the OG Xbox and late PS1 days, the WiiU graphics are on par with the 360 and PS3 days. Nintendo has been a generation behind for a while now.
Nice video bro, you just forgot to add, in my opinion, The Crysis Series and the upcoming game The Division from Tom Clancy, that one looks pretty awesome.
You should make a Q and A video, and if you do I've got a question for you. Why did you decide to make a TH-cam channel and make videos for it? Whatever the reason I'm glad because you're my favourite TH-camr.
forza 5 took so much work with the laser scanned tracks and the autovista cars. They literally modeled EVERY single part of EVERY single car and the detail is absolutely amazing in their car models
Does Gameranx have one of these videos for PC? Because I'd love to see that. Everything that consoles have been able to pull off graphically, we've pulled off better.
While the character models had ugly facial animation, Fable 1 was absolutely gorgeous on the OG Xbox. The environments aged very well in my opinion and the reflective surfaces of the weapons always mesmerized me. Fable 2 and 3 both were beautiful games on the 360, and built upon the art style of the first game (while fixing the face problems of the 1st.)
Not really big on playing Forza, but I will happily admit it's a frikkin gorgeous game. Mass Effect series, Halo series, Dragonage, The Arkham series, The Witcher, are amazing too. Also, I think you forgot Elder Scrolls V.
I've always thought Destiny has so much graphical style that I don't understand why people often seem to overlook the title when it comes to beautiful games. The visual language of the game, that UI so sleek. That is a gorgeous game.
Forza 5 definitely looks real... It still blows my mind on how good it looks. When I take an in-game photo, I"m in awe on how it could be in a magazine cover.
As much as I hate the Call of Duty franchise, I was absolutely blown away by CoD 4. My love for the series died after Black Ops 2, but I will never forget my experience with CoD 4. I was mesmerized by the cinematic quality that it was pushing out. I have never been so awe struck by another game in my life. Major props there. Oh, and you kind of missed Skyrim. Yeah, the PC version was a million times better, but it was still a beautiful open world that definitely deserved to be shown off.
I can't believe you didn't mention Skyrim for the the 360. That game pushed the limits of that console. It was huge, had a crazy amount of processes going on at the same time, and it looked great. The pc version blows it out of the water, but for a 360 game, I thought it was stunning. Even Oblvion. For it's time it was still close to Skyrim in that it pushed the limits of the console.
"We finally say bump maps on a console game" - you said this for Gears of War on the 360. Bump maps were around for years on the original Xbox, even Halo 1 had bump maps! The Xbox had a modified Geforce 3, which was capable of bump mapping to add the illusion of geometry at little cost to memory bandwidth.
This comment is based on actual facts. Please be objective and not the typical console wars theme you tend to roll with;
So Ive seen alot of people in the comments ask which has the better graphics.
FINNALY, SOMEBODY NOT SO BIASED!
Damn
Tim Dahle the playstation 4 has got better graphics potential but not sure if it's going to be used but the xbox one could easily catch up
Vaughan Bunt Actually since DX12 Xbox One has the same or even more potential than PS4
The dx12 simply kicks the xbox up a notch to the same league as the PS4.
i got an ps4 ad
Ps1=Xbox
Ps2=Xbox 360
Ps3=Xbox One
Ps4= it's too powerful for next generation gaming
HaHaHaHa!!! :D
too powerful, bullshit
I Feel Fantastic Um, PS2 is like Xbox, PS3 is like 360 and PS4 is like Xbox One. PS1 isn't like any Xbox.
PS1=Xbox
PS2=Xbox
PS3=Xbox 360
PS4=Xbox One
PC=u can't beat it
Board Games=Graphics are veryX100000 realistic
Board Game Master Race XD
Boardgamemasterrace
That was a very good history of Xbox lesson,
Thanks for posting.
In 2006 I wouldn't buy a pc, but now pc is the dominant graphics platform and is just better in every way.
No borderlands? Don't hate on Cell Shading bruh.
Slim*
PigglePuff HD i was about to say naw he meant cell and than i was like OHHH SLIM SHADY LOL
+Dallas Mann
Hell yeah. And what about XIII. And Team Fortress.
Cell-Shading rocks!
Borderlands? More like boredlands
Kidding. I love borderlands 2
Ghengis Juan i was about to flame untill i clicked read more
The new forza games look better than real life tbh
haha!
Forza Horizon 3 which has been recently released actually does at times!
Devil may cry 4 in 2008 looked better and runed better than bayonetta 2009
I love both of those games and honestly, I think they both ran perfectly. And the graphics were equally amazing, too.
Thel 'Vadam isn't that weird
I've had so much fun playing Gears Of War 1, 2, and 3 co-op, Horde, and MP Guardian and Annex.
what i love about both the xbox and ps is that they both have that unique feel to them that keeps me playing games over and over sure people fan boy over one console over the other but that's up to them i think there both great consoles and i love the games on both
kornyfreakgames here, here. Doesn't matter to me what platform I play on as long as I enjoy the game.
Blue Hat Gaming yeah why dont more people get that
kornyfreakgames Because they spend so much time worrying about brand loyalty that they forget that in the end games are a form of interactive entertainment.
+Blue Hat Gaming It's not _just_ brand loyalty. Some people grew up with a certain thing, so they tend to stick with that thing, because they know what to expect from it.
+Minor Elite that would be brand loyalty. but I know what you mean, a lot of people could only get one platform and had to stick by it, not everyone was lucky enough to have options.
you missed forza horizon 2
+Abra Cadabra Because sequels and new IPs are going to be made for the new consoles.
+Abra Cadabra That's a beautiful Strawman you kill there :)
Psvita games looks better than Xone games.
DON'T BE A FANBOY
Why you are so mad, screaming at me, i think you are the fanboy.
That is false. It may look better because its 1080p squished into a small screen, but tbh if there is any handheld you should brag about its the 3ds and DS. Hands down the best handhelds ever made.
I don't think you understand Xbox graphics are amazing color wise it's the best platform for that this video is just bad quality
+toqito azure Are you blind. Seriously you are a fanboy and I OWN a PS4.
Thank you for the Xbox version. I actually discover this channel yesterday & I watched the evolution of graphics for PS4. I agreed with other comment, maybe give Nintendo a try next lol not that we play their games for the graphics but it'll be nice what this channel comes out.
my god what a recap, thanks for this video! must have took you a lot of time!
PD: please dont Yrden against wolves lol
You want good grafics? Go to PC.
+aptminer You want better grammar? Go to school!
+Harry Wood No chill
Alvar wow, really? We had no idea! Thanks! :P
It was only a joke haha.
Alvar also for gameplay
Playstation is better than Xbox.
+lRedBaronl In your dreams, sonypony
NathanTheGamer 5612 Face it. PS4 has a huge lead on FailBox for a reason.
+NathanTheGamer 5612 yeah xbox n xbox 360 is better than ps1,2 n 3. but in ps4?? better than xbox one
Yoon A
I understand if you think xbox 360 is better than ps3, but saying that the original xbox is better than ps1 and ps2 is a sin lol
lRedBaronl for my opinion the original xbox graphic is more smoother n beautiful than ps1&2 graphic. and you know im still choose psxD
PC graphics suck they look fake it can't even make it to realistic graphics Board Game Master Race son PC can't beat that
Have you seen The Witcher 3 on PC? It blows both consoles out the fucking window.
Idiot
+Ethan Bushell the joke
your head
Didn't computers make games for consoles?
They use ps4 and xbone dev kits mostly
Thanks for this history of the Xbox games. I have my Xbox. one system now
I'm still waiting for the! Evolution of Graphics on Nintendo/wii/ds/whatever"!
Who the fuck cares
GrittyMoonBear I do fucking care.
+Josh Beta k
k
Josh Beta lol they all look the same. the Wii's graphics are from the OG Xbox and late PS1 days, the WiiU graphics are on par with the 360 and PS3 days. Nintendo has been a generation behind for a while now.
There were several games that looked and ran better on the PS2 like MGS2.
Nice video bro, you just forgot to add, in my opinion, The Crysis Series and the upcoming game The Division from Tom Clancy, that one looks pretty awesome.
THANK YOU for giving xbox some support for there graphics
I'm surprised on a list of the evolution of Xbox graphics you didn't include Crysis. It looked, and still looks extremely amazing.
Oh man Timesplitters was such a fun game. Many of my days we're spent playing it with friends
Thank you for saying all those nice things about Halo as it was the first game I played and my favourite still :)
+Liam Clayton (The Young Gun) You earnt a Sub
I really enjoy this type of video.
You should make a Q and A video, and if you do I've got a question for you. Why did you decide to make a TH-cam channel and make videos for it? Whatever the reason I'm glad because you're my favourite TH-camr.
Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory should be the poster child for Xbox graphics. Period.
Burnout 3: Takedown is still the best racing game I've played... and it's held that spot for atleast 9 years, and nothing has gotten close.
Those are some VERY interesting choice of clips you picked for the Batman games.... dafuq man lol
forza 5 took so much work with the laser scanned tracks and the autovista cars. They literally modeled EVERY single part of EVERY single car and the detail is absolutely amazing in their car models
*Single tear rolls down face* "Evolution is a beautiful thing."
The original Xbox opening. So beautiful.
Does Gameranx have one of these videos for PC? Because I'd love to see that. Everything that consoles have been able to pull off graphically, we've pulled off better.
Halo 1 already had bump maps. Loved 'em! Was shooting fancy holes into the walls all day long :D
I wish gameranx could do another video like this continued from last year to this year (2016 to 2017)
That would be super nice if they did that.
P.T. Still holds the title for the best graphics I've ever seen from a video game.
Dantes Inferno with its cut scenes were really good looking for its time.
It's 2020 and I still play this
I really think you shouldve put Max Payne 3 in there!! That game's graphics and transitions from cut scene to gameplay was flawless!
I miss my Xbox =(. That console was truely a gem, especially if you didn't own a gaming pc at the time.
Timesplitters and Timesplitters Future Perfect were one of my favorite games for Xbox.
When I heard that original Xbox opening, chills went down my spine
I think that you should have included Psychonauts for the original Xbox. That game is still visually impressive today.
I love these kind of videos
Lol love your commentary I kept giggling when you'd say it's pretty.
I actually played almost all of these, starting with Golden Eye. Most of 'em on PC, though.
Listing them in retrospect like that makes me feel old...
I've always thought Destiny has so much graphical style that I don't understand why people often seem to overlook the title when it comes to beautiful games. The visual language of the game, that UI so sleek. That is a gorgeous game.
I cant believe you failed to mention Oblivion or at the very least Morrowin. Pushed the boundaries when it comes to Open world RPG gaming.
Time splitters 2 was one of my favorite games on the GameCube. They need to revive the franchise and maybe also second sight.
Forza 5 definitely looks real... It still blows my mind on how good it looks. When I take an in-game photo, I"m in awe on how it could be in a magazine cover.
Would've like to see DOA for Original Xbox mentioned, but very good doc.
I fucking love you guys I'm so glad I subscribed
Rage, Bioshock, borderlands 1-2, blops 2, bf bad company 2, bf4 just to name a few.
