I think we can only trust him on books he hated, because on those I agreed. Books jack adores are books I rate 3-4 stars, but those he says are good but doesn't obsess with are those I absolutely adore! Like, Circe is my favorite book of all time, while Song of Achilles was only 3.5 stars to me

I'm a mythology nut and I bought Circe for my girlfriend. She had heard negative things about it, but I'm glad I proved her wrong, and so was she. She later agreed to read Song of Achilles, and it blew her away. I'll tell ya, these myths are fluid in the way they are told, and it is beautiful.

@@quratulaiiin i haven’t read SoA yet but I did read Circe, and I devoured it. I loved the prose and the different characters that visit Circe’s island. I especially loved following her own growth and was very moved by the ending. All I know about SoA is that it’s critically considered BETTER than Circe, which I think is saying a lot. More devastating too, I believe.

Just finished Circe and I felt like the book kept getting more interesting the further in I was. The first 90 pages were kind of eh and then it just kept getting more interesting with Circe's development to the point that I was sad it ended. Still a 4/5 stars read. Absolutely recommend!

Madeline millers style of writing is such a gem, i loved the song of achilles not only because of the story, but because the writing was so so beautiful! and i’m not even native english so i thought i’d have problems understanding the more lyrical style but it was so easy to dive into the story and forget i was reading

I just read Shuggie Bain and honestly… it’s definitely one of the best books I’ve ever read. An incredibly well-written character study that feels more real than any other fiction book I’ve read. In my opinion, a modern classic.
Jack, I still can't get over the fact that you read a lot of Japanese literature and haven't read Akutagawa yet. His best works are mostly short stories so you might not like them but Kappa is his only novel and it's GOOD. (other fav. short stories are Rashomon, In a groove, Hell Screen, Spinning Gears, The Life of a Stupid Man, A Note to a Certain Old Friend)

I read Carrie Soto right when it came out and I enjoyed reading it but also when you said the title I thought "wait did I read that?" and I think that's my review of it
I did my capstone project on Circe by Madeline Miller, so I am so glad to hear that you enjoyed it, too! Song of Achilles was amazing, as well. I feel like Madeline Miller just really knows how to end a book in a way that is bittersweet, but sooooo satisfying. She's also great at putting a unique spin on a well-known tale.

Jack I am begging you to read Young Mungo by Douglas Stuart, it's a beautiful queer love story set in 90s Glascow. Similar themes to Shuggie Bain, similarly raw and dark, but there is an undeniable glimmer of hope which I find hard to describe.
I actually wrote my seminar work about Madeline Millers Book "Circe" and compared aspects that were depicted differently in Madeline Millers Version to the Odyssey...and I really enjoyed it^^ loved the book and also your video☺️

I think Jack would enjoy Latin American authors a lot. There are amazing books within the Latin American community that I think it would be interesting to hear his point of view on some of them due to the huge cultural differences and the interpretation/translation of Spanish slang into English.

So I'm a big fan of Bojack Horseman and Rafael Bob-Waksberg's sense of humour, but still had a similar experience with the book, though I think more of it landed for me probably. I agree that the first story with the wedding is one of the strongest, and a lot were very basic or just average, but there were a few other standouts for me that had me laughing quite a lot, like the one with the young woman on vacation with her family dealing with the strained relationship with her estranged brother, I really related to a lot of that and thought the perspective flip at the start of it was really cleverly executed. It likely comes down to whether or not your sense of humor jives with it or not.
inverting the roles! let me recommend you a book, since you liked the idea of tokyo ueno station (but not the execution), i think you would probably enjoy The Posthumous Memoirs Of Brás Cubas by Machado de Assis. cant really suggest a translated version since i’ve read it only in portuguese, but i think you can easily find it if you search for it. machado is an amazing writer, his books are well known and well loved classics here in brazil 💚

Jack!! You need to read Stuart Douglas' second book, 'Young Mungo'! It's got very similar themes but in my opinion has a far more hopeful tone and I really think you would love it!
Heyy, I just learned about NoViolet's book, Glory. I am glad you had such strong feelings towards it because I probably would have picked it up if I had seen it in a store, but now I won't. So the reason it would have been an auto-buy is that I really liked her first one, ''We need new names''. If you have yet to read it, I would recommend that one. And if you do read it, I would love love love to hear what you think about it and whether it redeems her or not🤣.
I made the mistake of reading Shuggie Bain on my commute into work. Reading about child abuse & the grim realities of alcoholism didn't exactly make for a cheery me at my desk 😄 Amazing book though!

You should get a bookmark for each book on which you write the characters' names and main functions and relations Also i tend to remember elements of the story better when I read for longer periods of time
If you like mythology retellings, you can try reading The Immortals of Meluha by Amish Tripathi. It's a brilliant book based on Indian mythology and the Shiva Trilogy. You might really like it. Thanks for your videos, they're really fun to watch!

Nightcrawling takes place where I live. I’m so happy to hear non local people find it moving because it’s a story that needs to be told and it was told well.
I'm so sad that I'm not a native english speaker. I bought Circe in english and i have a really hard time making progress because there are way to many unknown words for me.
I'm still appreciating her writing style and can see the art of retelling a mythological story
I like this video a lot, but if I might make a recommendation, maybe you could do a part two to smash or pass except you judge the books by their covers. (A bit more true to what the game smash or pass is, but then you could read all the books you ‘smash or pass’ on and then review them afterwards.)
Omg I just finished Breast and eggs and had huge expectations for it but it fell a little flat to me too for the same reasons as yours, I thought I was alone with this point of view as the reviews online are so good, and maybe I missed something. Feels better to know someone else felt the same !

I absolutely loved Shuggie Bain and now want to read Young Mungo. Don't quote me on this but I read that the author was inspired by his favorite book, and mine, A Little Life which makes sense. Also welcome to America! NYC was a great choice, its an amazing city.

The Disaster Tourist made me cross. I was so keen to see what was going to happen, how everything was going to be resolved - then magic realism suddenly enters at the last minute and the plot exits. Such a cop out.

Jack!! You need to read Stuart Douglas' second book, 'Young Mungo'! It's got very similar themes but in my opinion has a far more hopeful tone and I really think you would love it!
Heyy, I just learned about NoViolet's book, Glory. I am glad you had such strong feelings towards it because I probably would have picked it up if I had seen it in a store, but now I won't. So the reason it would have been an auto-buy is that I really liked her first one, ''We need new names''. If you have yet to read it, I would recommend that one. And if you do read it, I would love love love to hear what you think about it and whether it redeems her or not🤣.

I made the mistake of reading Shuggie Bain on my commute into work. Reading about child abuse & the grim realities of alcoholism didn't exactly make for a cheery me at my desk 😄 Amazing book though!
READ YOUNG MUNGO!!! I LOVE Douglas Stuartt so much, and his second novel young mungo sounds similarly to what you were describing (i haven't read Shuggie Baine yet). Someone needs to check up on the author because he is clearly not okay but I love his work so far and cannot wait for more

You should get a bookmark for each book on which you write the characters' names and main functions and relations
Also i tend to remember elements of the story better when I read for longer periods of time

If you like mythology retellings, you can try reading The Immortals of Meluha by Amish Tripathi. It's a brilliant book based on Indian mythology and the Shiva Trilogy. You might really like it.

Will you ever consider reading similar graphic style books like maus? Hooky by Miriam Bonastre Tur is honestly one of my favorite books. It’s such a magical coming of age story and made me ugly cry. Also if u go with the online version, they have an adorably whimsical soundtrack too :>>
