      @@ToKiniAndyHi Andy :) I hope you’re doing well!
      Sorry to bother, but I was wondering if you can help me with one grammar rule I haven’t really understood.
      I’ve gone through the first point of Genki L 12 regarding “noda/ndesu” and it’s all clear to me except how and especially when to use “na/dattandesu” correctly with the nouns. In the video it’s said that it depends on the type of nouns, but I wasn’t able to understand which type of nouns need “na” in between😕.
      Also, I was wondering if it’s possible to use the present short form “dandesu”, since “datta” is the past short form of desu.
      Thank you very much in advance! I love your videos❤
      Sara

    Dear sir, by accident I stumbled across your youtube channel. For now I watched your explanations of Genki 1 lesson 11 and 12 (which I am currently learning for the first time). Your lessons are a lifesaver. I will watch all of them! In absence of a real teacher (or someone who can speak Japanese) you are my new sensei. Thank you for your time and effort.

    Anyone curious about the small nuance between いけない and ならない as the endings to なきゃ:
    I had it explained to me that いけない has a small volitional implication: お母さんに電話しなきゃいけない I must call my mom. (Slight implication that I am choosing to.) Kind of literally: I cannot go on not calling my mom. (Because it pains my heart so!)
    ならない has a slight implication that the circumstance is involuntary. It deemphasizes personal responsibility: 病院に行かなきゃならない I must go the hospital. Kind of literally: It has not become so that I can not go to the hospital. (Because I'm already in the ambulance, strapped to the gurney, and can't very well leave now can I?)
    Confusing? Yeah! But kind of fun!

    Just a quick question on the んです form. How would I use a negative な adjective or noun? As in:
    Instead of "That is a cat" = それは猫なんです
    How would I write "That is not a cat" in the same way as an explanation?
    Would it be "それは猫じゃないんです"? And then for the past tense "それは猫じゃなかったんです"?

    Thank you so much for this series, Andy. I don't even own the Genki books and find this series much better than the typical Tae Kim recommendation. Your explanations are simple and to the point, the presentation of sentence structure is fantastic (Helped me a lot in deciphering Japanese sentences - during my first weeks of learning I wasn't even able to tell when words start and end e.g. in Yotsubato!), and the continous dialogue examples are great to give the lessons a sense of progress and relevance, as well as adding some fun to the dry early learning phase. Especially because you keep adding more realistic contexts which makes the series seem more anchored in reality than your typical textbook lessons and lets us learn about the culture along with the grammar.

    Is there a reason the sentence at 39:30 is 「お部屋の掃除しなきゃ...」and not 「お部屋を掃除しなきゃ...」? It seems like the object, but is there a special usage for の when using 掃除?

    • @ToKiniAndy
      @ToKiniAndy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It's like the difference between
      I have to clean the room/house.
      vs
      I have to do the house cleaning. (お部屋の掃除 is this one)
      Thank you for watching. =)

  • @sl0523
    @sl0523 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    For "must", the differences between いけない and ならない are:
    A. ならない can only form the two patterns なければならない and なくてはならない, while いけない can form all the patterns, like ないといけない, etc.
    B. いけない is very subjective while ならない is more objective, so when it comes to obligations, laws and regulations, you would often see ならない.

I judt found this video today, the day I have my midterm for it. I'm so sad I haven't found your videos sooner. I feel that I could've retained and learned a lot more, and stayed motivated. I don't understand the use of -SA in 'tabenaSA SUGIRU'. -- What does the SA mean? The short form is tabenai so why tabenaSA sugiru and not tabenasugiru? • @ToKiniAndy

      から and ので are conjunctions. They connect two separate thoughts, with the first part giving the reason for the second. んです offers an explanation to a question, or adds emotion to an explanation you are giving to someone for why you did something. It is not a conjunction.

    I only have one question: I don't really get the difference between the usage of のです and ので. Isn't it used pretty much the same? With both expressions I tell a reason for something that happened/will happen, don't I?

    • @ToKiniAndy

      They are quite different. ので is a conjunction that means "but" or "so", while のです ENDS a sentence, and implies that the sentence is an explanation of some sort.

    Once again amazing work although i have a question, On Genki book about Sugiru it doesn't have a conjugation for negative form, so for nouns verb taberu will be tabenasasugiru ( i suppose its from plain negative tabenasai but u take off i and add sasugiru ) . for i adjectives we use the same rules like verbs like most of the cases, takakunasasugiru , and for na genkijanasasugiru ) what about if we want to keep negative for past tense? i didn't ate too much,it wasn't too expensive, and it wasn't too energetic?

    In the "でしょう" section, is it incorrect or does it change the meaning if you have a rising intonation for "でしょうか"? In the examples, "でしょうか" was said with a downward intonation for か.

    I really enjoy these grammar videos. These videos are really useful and clear which makes it even better. Thanks a lot.
    Now, I can read a lot of sentences and make sense of them, I just have to learn some vocabulary and keep refreshing the things I am not used to yet.😊😊

    ところで、ありがとうございます for this series! It really helped me a lot in clarifying things where the book didn't explain well. I'll be starting Genki II around September, good luck to me for that! :))

    I wonder if the difference between から and ので is a bit similar to using "because" vs. "since". In English, if I hear or use "since" I would also tend to assume that the reason is one that is obvious / already known to the listener.
