The art of James Gurney shows he is a living master, and I think he deserves to be remembered as one of the best artists of the 21st century based on skill alone.
Much appreciated James. Quoting the Tao is good for understanding watercolor. I loved your wife's painting and the other one, each was so vibrant. Now, where are my brushes.....
That was a great video Jim. It was nice to hear from the other artists perspective and see their paintings. Always interesting to see the same scene from other points of view.
Hey👋James! Great work as always. I had mentioned how most everyday I’ll see a Norman Rockwell painting or drawing I’d never seen before. The volume of his work is staggering. I’m ready to say the same of you. What a treat for this video to pop up in my TH-cam queue. Thanks for being an inspiration in my golden years!
There's so much gold in these videos I find myself watching them over and over. Thank you James for another great post. And it's great to see Jeanette's work too - I really like her style :)
Wow your wifes and friends paintings were amazing. I love how differently each of you paint. It was nice that your wife was involved in this video. As always i love your process and finished piece, i am always amazed at how you view a scene. Xx
James Gurney The picture is so flavorful cool, You are the best painter, As a Korean watercolor artist, I commend your painting, I pray that good things always happen!
You take what appears to be a mundane scene to most of us and you turn it into a lovely piece of artwork. I could watch you paint forever! Thanks for your inspiring videos. I just bought a set of gouache and hope to learn how to use them!
You all took a fairly mundane scene and created beautiful art. Well done! And thank you James for helping us see the big shapes. I can get lost in details too.
Great video and comparison. It's always exciting to see how you work through correcting a painting. The big shapes idea is a tough hurdle for new students. I'm teaching workshops here and I'm working on an exercise for my class where I have people take a landscape and 3 gradations of value (white->gray->black) construction paper and cut the big shapes. I struggle to get the lesson to stick so I'm hoping actually cutting paper will help drive it home. We'll see how it goes!
James Gurney Not to my recollection. Unless I missed a part. Although, Ive only watched Nathan (Fowkes, right?) video demos and I haven’t taken a workshop with him specifically.
I can never click fast enough when I see a new JG video hit my feed! It was lovely to see the other 2 paintings as well, to see the scene through different eyes. Thanks for sharing the talent with us!
I just thought I wanted to see your wife's painting as well and half a minute after this you showed it to us :) It is very good. The girl from California did well too. Thank you James!
I cannot begin to tell you how much I needed this, this morning. It really got me out of a funk and you topped it off by showing what the others were painting. Quite neat to see the same scene painted three different ways. Awesome!
Great work again, James! Thank you for including you correcting the height of the horizon!! I’ve gotten disheartened many times by similar “mistakes” but I’m learning it’s important to keep pushing through them.
Enjoyed your breakdown of the steps in this busy scene, always a help for so many. You all and a member of your extended family looked like you were having a good time before the rain came. Windsor, I went to your website and enjoyed seeing your art. You put a lot of heart into your works, so glad you were there for the video also.
wordsworth once said that the natural and the external world was bland. he said that what separates the artist from a regular man was that the artist could see this bland world and, through his art, create a version that was superior and more beautiful. i think this is an exemplar of wordworth’s idea ☺️
Wonderful! What I probably love most about these videos is the fact that at 1:30 in, it actually looks terrible! This is the stage where I would always rip things apart in anger and frustration. But this gives me hope. I have bought some paint tubes and brushes and I will try again. It has been 25 years.
My grandma has some Thomas Kinkade puzzles in her cupboard. She used to solve them in Winter (dont know if she still could manage it, cause her eyes are getting worse). Also, my other Grandma gave me "Dinotopia - A Land Apart from Time" as a birthday present when I was a litte rugrat, barely able to read. And now, see you standing there... I mean... kind of funny/strange to see the relation to my own life right now, like 25 years later. Greetings from Germany!
This channel keeps on improving although I have long rated it highly and now it has something like the number of subscribers it deserves. I can see it doubling in the near future. Definitely enhances the experience to include Jeanette's work and that of other artists.
That is so cool how you have friends to paint with. It was interesting to see the view from three talented illustrators of the same subject. Miss Kinkade's illustration was a bright and vivid coloration, while Mrs. Gurney's was more up-close with the fine contrast in detail.
I loved how you did the pop-ups in the last few seconds by pulling the tabs. Very original - to me, anyway.😊 The paintings were really nice too. I enjoyed seeing all three.
Finding your channel really made my day already. You are a very skilled painter! You know structure and layering so well from what I've seen already. Such a humble man but secretly very talented :)
Hi James.... I hope you and your family had a great Thanksgiving. It was nice to see Thomas Kinkade's daughter with you, at least I'm guessing that was her as I recall, I've watched and studied a lot of Thomas's history and painting style, not to mention that you were good friends. You are the only person that I've ever watched doing watercolors that makes major changes to his paintings more than half way through the process. Most water color painters try to lay colors in a planned sequence and hardly make any changes through completion. I guess that's the advantage of opaque media. Either way, your work is beautiful. And it was nice to finally see one of your wife's pieces as well.
The art of James Gurney shows he is a living master, and I think he deserves to be remembered as one of the best artists of the 21st century based on skill alone.
That's right, he has great skill- but that alone is not what makes a great artist.
Loved seeing Jeanette's and Winsor's paintings too, and hearing that it's ok to feel lost.
That's Thomas Kinkade's daughter!
Chris W I was wondering if she was. You can see a bit of similarity in her piece and her fathers work.
I heard some one say; "Do not paint what is supposed to be there, but only paint what you see..." I'm trying to keep that in mind
'
Once you know the rules you can break them, but it's good for starting out.
Even better one is, paint what you understand, not what you see.
Much appreciated James. Quoting the Tao is good for understanding watercolor. I loved your wife's painting and the other one, each was so vibrant. Now, where are my brushes.....
You can make even grey days look cheerful...!
The photoshop'ed image that accentuates all the shapes is super helpful! Amazing texture on the tree leaves. Bravo!
Wow, Jeanette's painting is wonderful! I love it!
That was a great video Jim. It was nice to hear from the other artists perspective and see their paintings. Always interesting to see the same scene from other points of view.
Love this. For my Christmas gift to myself I’m going to put together a Gurney easel!! Thanks for all you do.
Me too! Good luck with yours :o
I found 1/4” thick stair tread at local big box home center if you want an alternative to the plywood...
You are an excellent water colour painter. Enjoyed this video and loved the painting.
I loved seeing how 3 people painted the same scene. Do more of those please.
Thanks, we'll have to do that again.
A masterclass from a master artist. What a joy to watch these snippets of magic!
Hey👋James!

Thank you James your videos are always healing to watch! 💓💓
Man, I want this became one of my life goals, just travel&paint with friends, it's like photowalk, but with painting :)
Thank you! I loved seeing everyone's paintings! It so much fun to see what stood out to each one of you through your paintings!
Dispatch: 911, what’s your emergency?
Nosy neighbor: They’re painting again!!
LMAOOOOOO
Wow !!! 5:14 FINALLY Mrs. Gurney!👍🏼 🤓
There's so much gold in these videos I find myself watching them over and over. Thank you James for another great post. And it's great to see Jeanette's work too - I really like her style :)
Jeanettes's watercolor painting is the one I like the most. Congratulations
Wow your wifes and friends paintings were amazing. I love how differently each of you paint. It was nice that your wife was involved in this video.
As always i love your process and finished piece, i am always amazed at how you view a scene. Xx
I love that three people can paint the same scene, from almost the same viewpoint, and come up with three unique paintings.
James Gurney
The picture is so flavorful
cool,
You are the best painter,
As a Korean watercolor artist, I commend your painting,
I pray that good things always happen!
You take what appears to be a mundane scene to most of us and you turn it into a lovely piece of artwork. I could watch you paint forever! Thanks for your inspiring videos. I just bought a set of gouache and hope to learn how to use them!
Thank you so much for your videos. You are comforting during this terrifying time.
Each painting is so different, but I like yours for the blend of detail, and large broad strokes that from afar makes sense.
Hi James, I love your painting, and your wife Jeanette's painting as well. I really hope to see more of her art featured here in the future!
This channel is so peaceful
James thank you, your videos are so kind, warm and full of peace and love.
Winter is just around the corner in Japan.
I hope everyone's autumn is wonderful. Thank you.
loved seeing three different artist’s takes on the same scene. greatly enjoyed this video!
You all took a fairly mundane scene and created beautiful art. Well done!
And thank you James for helping us see the big shapes. I can get lost in details too.
Stunning. Loved the end result and the journey you took us on to get there.
Looks awesome and peaceful to do.

Did you take Nathan's workshop? Did he have you do the thing with the paper cutout shapes?
James Gurney Not to my recollection. Unless I missed a part. Although, Ive only watched Nathan (Fowkes, right?) video demos and I haven’t taken a workshop with him specifically.
So good. Love watercolors.

Thanks James. You make it look so easy.
You are a wonderful artist and an awesome teacher mister!
Excellent tutorial, and so nice to see what Jeannette and Windsor painted as well.
I can never click fast enough when I see a new JG video hit my feed! It was lovely to see the other 2 paintings as well, to see the scene through different eyes. Thanks for sharing the talent with us!

That's a very beautiful church on the other side of the road! Great video and awesome paintings!
I’m watching this before bedtime..so calm.. so relax..
A great painting with depth and atmosphere 🎨😊
Thank you for this, paint big shapes then paint details. Watching you do it gives me courage to do it!
Loved them all
Didn't expect to see Winsor in this video! We used to go to high school together haha
Thank you so much for reminding me that an hour can go by with only big shapes
I cannot begin to tell you how much I needed this, this morning. It really got me out of a funk and you topped it off by showing what the others were painting. Quite neat to see the same scene painted three different ways. Awesome!
Wow!!! I loved watching this and learning. Y'all are awesome. Thank you, James!!!

I learn so much from every single video of yours. Thanks, James!
thank you for providing such materials about painting for free!
Simply amazing!
The way you paint and how also your wife and Friend painting the same street oh man, pretty neat stuff, you have one more subscriber.

It ’s very nice art. I am happy to meet your work! Thank you for the impression. my friend!🌈🌈🌈
Eyes out of focus works great for seeing the big shapes. Cool video!
Thank you very much. You are very inspiring.

Greetings from Germany!
I have a book by you and the late Thomas Kincade The artist's guide to sketching. It is a favourite book of mine . I love it.

Great stuff man I agree, this style of art is cool, let’s your mind fill in the blanks.

Excellent painting sir ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I loved how you did the pop-ups in the last few seconds by pulling the tabs. Very original - to me, anyway.😊
