Hello Dr. Skiles,
The research on VANETs have been ongoing for more than a decade. Do we have any practical VANETs deployed for the public yet? What is the current status? Which OEMs/Car manufactures have this feature already?

So you may not think of them as VANETs but there are smaller-scale VANETs that exist. An everyday example is for toll roads they use an RFID with the stationary toll plaza being the RSU. Some speed camera technology has also veered close to VANET implementations. The issue with OEMs/Car manufacturers is dealing with standards in communication IEEE 1609 WAVE is the standard in the US that has to be conformed with and tests were done by USDOT to show the feasibility of V2X communication (where several different car manufacturers). This will take several years though given infrastructure needs - I would expect to see more sophisticated applications closer to 2050.

If you are just starting off in your journey I suggest either NS3 or OMNET++, but honestly if your are working with an advisor or group go with what your team already does/knows. The support online for any of these tools are lacking...it is best to use a tool that you can get help and assistance within your research group.

Hi Monika - although I am not actively involved in researching VANETs anymore, here are few topics I think would be novel/are interesting and relevant:
* Solutions/algorithms for better data dissemination - particularly in situations where there is limited connectivity or bandwidth.
* Investigating new routing protocols that leverage 5G which can also adapt to the dynamic nature of VANETs and improve the efficiency of data transmission.
* Security in VANETs is also a hot topic - perhaps utilizing blockchain methods
