    I think some younger people simply don't understand that 'villain' was a genuine direct insult/accusation used by people of Tolkien's generation, and their children. Both of my grandparents on my mother's side, and their eldest son, used to say 'he's a villain!' in earnest, during regular conversation. The association the term now possesses with genre fiction is an evolution that has caused Sam's line to mistakenly appear clunky, when in fact he's simply speaking in the same way as working class English people would back in the 1940s-1970s.

    I’m going to be honest, Cinematic Venom came off as really good here. He was humble and open to his shortcomings and learned to laugh at himself. It’s good lessons we can all benefit from. And while I didn’t agree with some of his takes here about LOTRs, I commend him for being willing to change and interact with EFAP. Yes Mauler and company can be mean at times but how you deal with your critics can often be a good thing. It can help you grow and learn. And these podcasts when talking about media they can help future writers figure out what to and not to do. And the same is for content creators. Because we should always strive to do better.

    I have watched EFAP 93 fifteen times from start to finish... Cinematic Venom was such a wonderful villain. so cruel and unjust in his judgement of Lord of the Rings he was, so that when EFAP found it and reviewed it their video shown down the brighter and put pay to words "That there is some good in this world and it's worth fighting for!"
    Now at the end of an age, through roasting and bad takes Cinematic Venom has returned to us anew, and no longer I look upon an enemy.

      @@gwoody4003 ah a fellow man of the road! It certainly was a troll to some extent but as someone who has watched his video through EFAP an unhealthy amount of time, I can say that it is the fact that Cinematic Venom was earnestly trying to deconstruct the movies which makes it so good. He genuinely misrepresented the movies and it was made all the more clear by his breakdown on Twitter after and then his real life breakdown and return, the guy really did believe a lot of what was in that video.
      The acting criticisms, the long shots, the "padding", a lot of that still reflexed in his new video. He is more enlightened now and props to him it takes a lot of fortitude to admit fault AND come onto the podcast that had so thoroughly ripped into your video and you as a person. reflexes well on him

      YMS is a lot like Jay from Redlettermedia. Encyclopedic knowledge of cinema and a far broader and more well-rounded approach to media then the 'story-trumps-all' laser-focus of EFAP, let down by arrogance that has accumulated from being the smartest man in the room far too many times than is healthy. YMS needs to get out of his comfort zone and put himself in situations where he can be challenged and debated by people he actually respects as equals, to prevent the intellectual stagnation from setting in permanently. Unlike Mauler, YMS has reached the point where he no longer truly listens and evaluates opposing views - he's become too comfortable in his own perspective. One of Mauler's greatest strengths is that he'll literally listen to anybody, no matter how ridiculous the opinion. This is what has made him such an excellent mediator and/or devil's advocate in online debates.

    Regarding Legolas being just way too good/OP, Tolkien's elves are just built different. While Legolas is not the greatest elf warrior, let's not gloss over powerhouses like Fingolfin, Echtelion, or Glorfindel. Slaying Balrogs, wounding Morgoth in a duel (several times) - just small things like that.
    Or Finrod who tore a werewolf apart with his bare hands after being chained and imprisoned by Sauron.
    Compared to their feats fighting "mere" orcs, trolls, and some lanky elephants is not much.

    The point of Gollum falling by accident is that no one could have willingly destroyed the Ring. It would just not let it happen. A higher power was neccesary. It is not mentioned directly in the Lord of the Rings, but Tolkien meant it to be a devine intervention in form of an "random accident". Also the reason why Elrond wouldn't take the Ring from Isildur - and even if he would have done so, Elrond would not have been able to destroy it.

    1:21:00 Between Gandalf or Boromir dying being more heartbreaking, I would perhaps put it as Gandalf is the more obviously heartbreaking and it really wrecks all of the characters because they all love him and look up to him, but Boromir is the more intellectually heartbreaking if you actually understand his character (which we know that a great many people don't) and think about what his death means for himself and for the entire group (and story) in the long run.

    28:00 It was very much a different time, where adaptations were still thought of in terms of actually translating the source material. With all the context of today's climate, I'm sure Christopher Tolkien would tend to reconsider his assessment relative to the modern adaptation approach. I would be interested in his specific criticisms, though. I also wonder if Tolkien himself might have been more in favor of the Jackson trilogy than his son. It's possible that Christopher felt overly protective of his father's work and looked at all derivative works too narrowly. If true, I could relate to that, as I tend to be more protective of things people entrust into my care than my own stuff, you know?
    2:05:00 And not only that, he was originally supposed to play Gandalf on Tolkien's own recommendation, but got talked into playing Saruman (ie. a "lesser" role (in terms of screen time)) instead. To then also be completely cut out of the third film must have been very hurtful - a very narrow-minded decision.

    10:15 I can't remember if it's answered in the movies but it is explained in the books. The school has protection around it which prevents any form of magical transportation from working without the Headmaster's approval but the Triwizard Cup had to be approved as a Portkey for the Task so Barty Crouch could use that and just add an extra destination. Plus Harry disappearing during the Task makes it easier to look like an accident

    • @samwallaceart288
      @samwallaceart288 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah the challenge with HP is so much of the magic is over-powered as fuck and limiting them with rules and loopholes _without_ being super arbitrary and deus ex machina is something that'd stump even the best editor.
      LOTR is really insulated by the fact that the craziest magic we see is local physics-based stuff like the river's anti-wraith security system or smashing a bridge to collapse or causing a really bad storm. There isn't a "teleport to where this object came from" they could use the whole time that needs to be explained away.
      Closest we get to that is them not using the Eagles as transport, which is wonky but makes enough sense for us to let slide.
      The Portkey thing being a special exception to the school-wide ban makes enough sense as a technicality that helps the story function.
      The problem with Harry Potter is that _every plot item_ is "wonky and needs special caveats but makes _just enough_ sense for the story to function", and when it's that often it starts to pile up and give the whole story a "whatever happens happens because the writer says so" type of energy.
      While with LOTR you're immersed in the idea that even if Gandalf has deus ex machina powers of foresight, he _still_ has to physically ride 3 days to get somewhere.
      I really like HP but it's interesting to see the issue and think on how to avoid it in one's own writing

    I know Saruman's death is usually singled out as THE scene that most needed to be restored to the theatrical cut, but I actually disagree: if I could restore just one, I'd rather have Boromir and Faramir's moment in Osgiliath. That scene adds so much _critical_ context to Faramir's whole storyline. The theatrical cut gives us no idea what Faramir's relationship with Boromir was like at all!

    • @MediumRareOpinions
      @MediumRareOpinions 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      It pains me to admit it in part because of the "meta" of cutting out Christopher Lee but you're absolutely right that it's much more significant for character development both for Faramirs scenes to come and retroactively for Boromirs scenes before.

    when they say that it is odd that after the battle of Helms Deep, Gimli and Legolas have about the same kill count, i think they might have not considered all the things that happen in the fight. I so happen to have watched LOTR 2 at least 50 times or more (not important really) but, after the initial 17/2 ratio, Gimli is jumping on top of the wall between two ladders and is bashing with the axe the orcs as they climb them. Increasing his kill count quite a lot. Unusual how they did not snipe him with a crossbow, but the ladders were already on top of the wall so, it is somewhat believable that he is surviving this. And second thing, when Gimli and Aragorn jump on the bridge to defend the gate. They should score a few kills in there as well. Legolas does indeed take out a rope pulling a triple ladder on top of the keep, however even if those ladders bounce back to the ground, those are not kills. it is not believable that those heavily armored orcs would die from that fall damage. they would take damage, but not die. As a general rule, a melee soldier will score kills much faster than a bowman. The bowman simply has the advantage of safety, a higher survival rate.
