Hello from South Africa I have just found your channel I'm not much of a gardener but I did successfully grow aggies from seed this last season They are now about 3 inches tall and are ready to be transplanted out I super excited I think I will follow your advice and pot them up and overwinter them in my sunroom Hopefully by spring - September for us - they will be sturdy enough for the garden Thanks so much for your info
Yes! have a go and keep us posted with your progress, here's how we collected and sowed the seeds last December th-cam.com/video/-tFTWagZeN4/w-d-xo.html
Thanks for the inspiration. I'm looking to try to get mine to grow from seed this year. I'm not sure if all the varieties give viable seed but worth a try. Maybe in 3 years i'll have some new flowers.
@@rogthegardener1 Three weeks later and I've got a few seedlings starting to show. Planted some in mid october and I've kept a few seeds back to do another batch in spring. I thought it was an interesting experiment to see what worked best. Onwards and upwards.
@@TheZlugg Hey thats great - well done! yes always a good idea to keep some seeds back in reserve, watch out for slugs / snails as they seem to like our seedlings for lunch!
@@rogthegardener1 end of May here and I seem to have finished up with about 12 healthy plantlets. The success rate seems about the same for the seeds I planted in November and those started in March. I had quite a lot of seedlings come up but then lost quite a few before they transitioned to healthy plantlets, not really sure why (not slugs). They don't seem to be a lot of trouble to look after, happily sitting on my patio, so well worth it just for the interest. Cheers.
@@rogthegardener1 Did you ever find out which variety the agapanthus was? Mine only seem to put out a couple flower heads in August and then die off, so I would be keen to know what you have as you stated your flowers from June to August. Thanks
@@rogthegardener1the slugs don’t think so .. I was shocked by how many I ended up with floating in my little trap Loathe to use pellets and the beers a winner
@@rogthegardener1 Thank you for seeing this and replying! Yes, hopefully next year. Is it a bit early for the flowers to drop off? I'm wondering why. It was bought at the local market and I re-potted it with a mixture of compost and coco-coir. Too much moisture?? We've had some very hot days. I didn't water for a day or two. I wonder if that's the cause? Anyway, I love the way you present things - very enjoyable and entertaining. You have a personality made for doing this!
@@Uniq_Jer31vs33 thanks very much for your encouragement 😀 Hard to be sure of the cause, possibly the plants focus was on getting its roots established as they are it’s ‘life support’ in its new home?
@@rogthegardener1 That makes a lot of sense. Well, here's to next year! It was pretty while it lasted - 3 bloom heads, two tall, one short. I paired it in a pot with a solid yellow pansy. It was very nice to look at!

Morning Roger. Which variety are your agapanthus.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Deb, I dont think we have the name on this, when I am next in that garden I will check for a label .. but i think it was a gift with no label ...

@@sabsbathurst ah sorry Deb, no label so can’t be sure.
Slug hunting should start an hour after sunset with your cellphone light. If you are near a field, discard of them there. Biggest success then.
Thanks for your comment - very true!
Put dishes with a bit of beer out for slugs to drown themselves in. Harmless trap
Yes that can work, seems like a terrible waste of beer ?! 😀

My flowers have all dropped off - so sad!
Oh shame - maybe next year...?
