Beer, beach and bloodshed: How German occupation of Qingdao, China led to Tsingtao Beer 中英字幕

  • You’ve probably heard of Tsingtao beer - it’s definitely one of China’s most famous exports - but you may not know the bloody story of how it came to be set up, and how it inevitably helped lead to the May Fourth Movement, a political turning point in China’s recent history.
The beach city of Qingdao, part of Shandong Province and today home to some 9 million, has been the plaything of foreign forces for much of the 20th century, with German forces seizing the city in the late-1890s before the Japanese took over in 1914.
When the Treaty of Versailles proposed transferring Qingdao, and other areas, directly to the Japanese instead of returning them to the Chinese people, the May Fourth Movement was born, significantly changing the course of the world’s most populous nation.
Come with me as I visit the city of Qingdao, the Tsingtao Beer factory, May Fourth Square and other must-visit spots while discussing the city’s tumultuous history.

Have you heard about Chinese Labour Corps (CLC) ? In WWI, 140,000 young and strapping Chinese men mostly came from Shandong province who travelled to Europe to support British and French forces and suffered high casualties in the battle. Some were poorly treated and murdered. In the post-war Treaty, Shandong was supposed to be returned to China upon Germany defeat but the occupied Eight Alliance decided handed it over to Japan instead. Imagine the sheer betrayal the Chinese must have felt. Never again will the Chinese trust these western imperialists. There was a documentary made about these men's sacrifice and deliberately erased from the war history. Chinese have suffered enough.

That is a sad fact; the similar unfair fact is also seen from US history that the rail road workers from China were ignored in history and further got excluded through the Chinese Exclusion Act.

China must remember and learn from history how it was treated. Your country curved up, countrymen discriminated and killed. Chart your own path and not believe people who talk with forked tougue. China was threatened with nuclear shrike not once but 3 times, during the Korean war, Vietnam War and Soviet conflict. So remember all these and continued to enlarge your nuclear arsenal.

The Versailles treaty wasn't decided by the Eight Alliance. Conditions were dictated to Germany for example.

@Gregory Jones Would you understand if it was done under duress? Just like Hong Kong was ceded to the British colonists under the threat of more gunboat war. And the opening up of many ports in China to Western powers under duress.

Fascinating video. I’ve learnt much from it. Do you do your own editing? If so you have phenomenal skills, your videos are always so pleasing to watch. I love how the architecture in this city has a European and Chinese mix. You have those old German buildings and the Buddhist pagodas. Looking forward to the next stop of your trip!
