You guys are the only people on youtube that makes you email your company, and wait for the results. Thanks for being difficult to deal with. Almost to the point of being suspicious and untrustworthy.
Doing a blind shootout is most definitely the preferred method, but in order to make any kind of decision, we kind of need to know which mic is which after the fact. Get on it guys! Otherwise a lovely comparison. Mic D and C were my favorites. Mic C had a certain musicality to it and some mid range definition that A and B lacked despite all three being fairly hyped sounding. Mic D was the standout with its smooth top end and extended low end response though.
Hey everybody got the list. look down Hey Fernando, Thanks so much for writing in and for checking out our shootout. The mic order for this shootout was: Mic A - Warm Audio WA-14 Mic B - Lauten LA-220 Mic C - sE Electronics sE2200a II Mic D - Warm Audio WA-47 JR
I'm glad this was only 7 minutes, because I kinda wasted them, expecting to find out at the end which mic is which. It would have been a good video if you guys didn't leave that out.
A and D are have a much smoother sound on the vocals. B and C are very sibilant, in a way that many modern cheaper condensers are. I know the SE2200a's are very sibilant and i'm guessing the Lautens are too. So those have to be B/C, can't tell which is which. The other two are the WA's, i find myself gravitating towards mic D so i'm going to have to say that is the 47jr i've been longing for forever. That would make A the WA14.
Judging mics through dry vocals is what many do, I rather want to hear hot it works with reverb, mic A was the best in allowing the transients through and making the reverb cleaner and sweeter sounding. Mic D did well also but with a warmer tone. I'd pic Mic A for your vocals recording of that track.
I’m only glad that my ears were good enough to recognize the Lauten 220a after just a week of owning it (mic B).. Very nice demo and shoutout, all 4 options sound like a very nice sonic variety with differing focus and qualities..
@@boimesa8190 A = WA14 natural & balanced B = LA220 bright+ hyped top end C = SE2200 dynamic & clear D = WA47J big &warm E = URmic - dull & dim, shotty & malfunctioning, thin & nasally sounding
Ok, without having watched the end of the video and looking for the results, these are my findings: For the guitar I preferred mic B because the guitar itself seems to be quite dark in the first place, so mic B brings out the high freqs and gives a bit more air. Mic D did that as well, but not with such a nice lower mid warmth as C did. C and A were a bit dull in this context. B D C A For vocals D and A are the apparent winners with a nice non-exaggerated high end and unobtrusive sibilance. B and C were really harsh on the esses. Made my ears hurt. D A B C For the full mix the same issue with the esses on B and C made me prefer A and D again, with D being the overall winner for me. D A B C So, overall I would record guitar with mic B and vocals with mic D. :)
@@hazardmouth Well, actually Askehave gave the list : Mic A - Warm Audio WA-14 Mic B - Lauten LA-220 Mic C - sE Electronics sE2200a II Mic D - Warm Audio WA-47 JR
I just sprung for the WA47jr, so of course I was hoping it would be my fave. It wasn't in every aspect, but this still made me glad I chose it over others, including the WA14. My thoughts prior to knowing the results: mic A (the 14) has nice full lows and mids but is a bit dark overall, and the highs are a bit too smooth, and not as crisp as I would like. This was more obvious on the guitar. B (LA-220) is too thin and bright on vocals for my taste, but the guitar sounded really good through it since it probably doesn't need much help sounding resonant, and the crisp highs certainly aren't lacking as they were with mic A. C (2200a) was actually my least favorite overall, because it has the sibilance of B along with less defined mids, especially noticeable on the vocals. A strong mid push that sounds a little messy. Finally, D (the 47jr) was my fave on vocals, with rich lows and clear but smooth highs---more clarity than A or C. On guitar, it was actually my second favorite behind B. However, since I'll be mainly using it to record my guitar amp, along with a Sennheiser 609, the stronger lows and mids compared to B should work well. The highs, while well-behaved, aren't dull or sibilant---a happy medium, which should also work well with my voice. My other condenser is the latest (black) version of the Rode NT1. So, I'm accustomed to a neutral sounding mic, but the 47jr should be a step up, with a bit more restrained lows and slightly enhanced highs. Of course, knowing the results has probably tricked my brain into thinking I like it better after hearing it several times since--lol.
You mean that NT1 sounds better than se 2200. I am confused between NT1 and se 2300a. Can you pl. guide me which mic is best for vocals. I want to open a home studio.
@@HarvinderSingh-yy8th I've never used the 2200 to compare directly with my NT1, and the NT1 isn't in the comparison video, so not sure. FWIW, compared to the WA47jr, the NT1 is a little more resonant in the lows, with a bit less mid push to my ears. On vocals, at least with my voice (baritone/tenor), I actually slightly prefer the NT1. The WA47jr is more restrained/less boomy in the lows---some might say thin. It's not thin, just less resonant. The highs are smoother than with the NT1, which can border on sibilance, but nothing a de-esser can't take care of. Overall, both are fairly neutral sounding mics, with the NT1 having bigger lows and less refined highs. The WA47jr has more clarity to my ears, and is a bit more controlled in the highs and lows. For guitar I absolutely prefer the WA---it's mid emphasis seems tailor made for guitar frequencies. The NT1 is still a great mic for the money, and if you can find a used one with the rectangular metal pop filter (I think they changed the filter on newer NT1's), that filter is really outstanding. Even better than the metal Stedman I bought for the WA. Sorry I can't help with the 2200.
I love this concept, like other people said probably make the mic list known next time (in like a link in the description) so those of us that want to listen blind can just choose to do so. Also I was really surprised to like the sE2200a II so much, it's the only one out of this list that I personally own. That WA47jr is looking really good as well. I really liked B as well, it's a different experience. This turned out to be the Warm Audio C414 clone I think? I liked that one more on guitar and C/D on vocals. The WA-14 sounds fine to me, but the others just sound a little bit better in this use case. In my opinion.
I just purchased one of these and listened to the whole thing…I kept saying X was my favorite in everyone and that’s the one I bought! Cool to do it blind and learn that I actually like the sound of my mic more that it’s price range competition! Wowza that's a lot of fake reverb. Great-sounding mics, guitar, performances, and recordings, thanks for making the video. But I find almost an offensive to use that much reverb (hot take, I guess, but maybe traditional folksongs should sound relatively natural?) and to have to email to get the mics revealed.
I was surprised d sound best overall, because it felt thin in the vocal and felt a bit loud in the guitar, I am interested to find out what he did in the mix with levels and compression to smooth it out.
I think given the comments in this and the preamp video you guys should rethink not posting the results at the end of the video. And given this video has over 7500 views ( the preamp video ever more) you should have a considerable amount of sales leads to pursue without offending what seems like 100% of your viewers. Hi sounpure :) a little note from France, to say first of all that i really enjoyed the interpretation of this man. Its sincere, genuine and he seems to take pleasure at what he is doing. And the overall video really helped. However i have 2 questions to ask, 1) what is that song? I love it. Really john martyn like. 2) which mic did he prefer sing into? Im a folk singer and struggle to choose between la220 and wa47jr. Much thanks for any responses and sorry for my english 🙃 take all good care!
tell me wich mic is wish and i tell you wich one was best! it`s a little selfish to not let us know which is which mic, it`s like your using your audience for own purpose only.. :D :D
I liked A on the solo guitar, followed by D. D killed on vocal and in the full mix. B and C were cheap and zizzy sounding, with no body. The top end on B might be useful in some situations. C was pretty much awful.
