Difficult bass line to play because the fretting hand does a lot of work both in finger independence and shifting. Nonetheless, a great song to play! I wish you luck on mastering that song!
It's not too bad a song in those regards. There are some parts where the pinky is working overtime and yes I agree shifting the hand is key. But most of the passages are repetitive arpeggios. The second half of the song is just a repeat of the first half of the song. I thought it'd be harder to play because Death plays it so well, but it's not a difficult song to learn. It's more intermediate than difficult. I would say watch out for tempo and rhythm, because there are multiple points where the tempo changes and the rhythms need to be maintained at higher/lower speeds. I've also found it easier to play on my five-string than on my four-string but I'd say my four-string is more fun to play in general than my five.
kahwigulum You're correct, it's more intermediate to say the least. The way I approached it, however, was from watching Andriy Vasylenko, a metal bassist from Ukraine (s/o to Andriy) who is a big fan of Metallica. Like him, I play finger-style bass, though his fretting hand makes these intricacies I thought were interesting compared to other bass covers I've seen.
Haha yea, that's who I saw do it first and who I emulated. I was going to mention Andriy in my message but didn't think anyone would know who I was referring to!
Thank you for making this excellent video I'm a metal Bassist, David Ellefson is underrated, for sure I would like to learn Black Sabbath's Hand of Doom by the Great Bassist Geezer Butler
Talking about underrated metal bass players .... how about Frank Bello from Anthrax? Caught in a Mosh would be an awesome song for you to make a video about.
You can always benefit from relearning a song or rediscovering the history of it coming to fruition....get new ideas, maybe adding more emotion in it .
Good lesson, Mark. Glad to see someone give a proper breakdown of this great bass line. Anyone ever try playing this without a pick? Jeez, it's a workout!
Always greet to meet a fellow traveler. Seeing Jason Newsted perform live in Moscow in the early 90’s (on TV) instantly got me hooked. My style is significantly different now 30+ years later, but I still like to revisit my metal roots from time to time.
There ought to be Megadeth Bass playing lessons. That alone would grind in some chops. That whole bands catalog has a myriad of great and difficult basslines. Especially the first two albums
This is one of those bass lines that I always tried to get but couldnt get completely. The opening part is what gets me so if I couldn't get the beginning right there was no way I was gunna learn the rest. I tried doing it on guitar (I do this quite a lot due to the lighter strings whenever I struggle with a tricky bassline) just to get the essence and did quite well. Thanks to this vid im gunna give it another stab man thanks a lot
I want to see a bassist play this without a pick. I’m certain some lunatic can do the entire song like a joke, but I’ve never seen it done without a pick. Picks definitely do give different tone, plus palm muting is more easily conceivable.
@@metaldave08096 I bet. You absolutely can be faster with fingers. Use index middle and ring finger like a machine gun. That’s crazy, bass is harder than guitar. I bought one years ago for fun thinking it’ll be tough to get used to but I have some background in guitar playing, I had calluses. My calluses were nothing on those bass strings, I thought it wouldn’t be an issue, it was almost like playing guitar again after taking months and months off.
A guy called Rutherford did it without a pick. See his bass playing channel and you'll find it. I would post the link but likely that'll get my post removed due to past experiences.
Wow I tried to learn this song yesterday and it was really hard. And I can't believe you just uploaded this video. Thanks for this tutorial. It was helpful
Speed but precision are the key and dificulty of this bassline. Many techs in there😱 Also, many people call David Ellefson underated bassist, but to me, he is on my top 10 rock bass players and bass heroes🤘
I m your fan, and a spend a lot of time to learn more your lessons, and i see you very strongly bass player and i now you can teach all bass rifs 😀😅😉😁😊
Are you Jazz III'ing there?!? Also thanks for the alternating up/down starting points... I was wondering whether that was a tactic that I was overlooking, and your take on it has sealed it... I'm going back to basics to get that drilled.
I love your bass tone bro. Ibanez basses are awesome. I arranged this song with slap. I just wish I could have done it with the tone you have. Excellent instructional vid👍
Great video, una pregunta q tipo de bajo tienes, y si esos microfonos son integrados o el bajo es asi, q modelo de ibanez es ese q tocas, gracias, keep it up, bro

I agree he is massively underated, he's in my top 5 for sure.
Any possibility of Crystal Skull by Mastodon in the future?
0:41 I don't know why, but this part sounds like it would fit as a doom ost in the 90s
Yes! Finally! Thank you for this! I'm currently learning Death - Spirit Crusher -- Fantastic metal bass line. More like this please!

Thank god... METAL...! PLEASE DO MORE..!
Thank you for making this excellent video I'm a metal Bassist, David Ellefson is underrated, for sure I would like to learn Black Sabbath's Hand of Doom by the Great Bassist Geezer Butler
Damn right David Ellefson is one of the most underrated metal players!! I have his sig Jackson CBX-V, playing this song on it sounds like a dream!
Talking about underrated metal bass players .... how about Frank Bello from Anthrax? Caught in a Mosh would be an awesome song for you to make a video about.
triplehood I've played it many times in an old band I was in. Great riff.
And it would satisfy the finger picking bass players if you did a video about it ;) :D
Same goes to the former Testament bass player, pretty melodic.
You can always benefit from relearning a song or rediscovering the history of it coming to fruition....get new ideas, maybe adding more emotion in it .
Oskar Toledo, yes Greg Christian fantastic bass player
Good lesson, Mark. Glad to see someone give a proper breakdown of this great bass line. Anyone ever try playing this without a pick? Jeez, it's a workout!

yes! something from Megadeth!
There ought to be Megadeth Bass playing lessons. That alone would grind in some chops. That whole bands catalog has a myriad of great and difficult basslines. Especially the first two albums
Bad Omen in particular is a nightmare to play
I can't say much about the bass tone unfortunately but I love the fact you made a video on this awesome song!

Picks definitely do give different tone, plus palm muting is more easily conceivable.
I accept this challenge. I can go fast enough, I just need to learn all of the notes. I do use a pick sometimes, but I’m much faster with my fingers.
josh dubois on The Bass Channel
Challenge accepted.

Man, I love your lessons Mark!
Great job - post more of your favorite bass parts. This was helpful.
Thanks Mark, i appreciate this! This is extremely helpful!
I love how this sounds!
I love that bass sound. Great video. Great song.
A lesson on Deicide would be really helpful
Satan spawn...... THE CACO DAEMON!!!
Wow I tried to learn this song yesterday and it was really hard. And I can't believe you just uploaded this video. Thanks for this tutorial. It was helpful
Awesome lesson, Mark! Thank you!
Really enjoying your metal stuff...and all your vids...I'm a metal guy but love seeing the others too...keeps the playing interesting 🤘🤘
Cool i actually commented on your last video to make a course about metal riffs. Thank you man!
Greatest song ever
badass riff, i love it too !!!
More metal and rock 🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🇨🇱
Saludos para tu hermoso país
Speed but precision are the key and dificulty of this bassline. Many techs in there😱 Also, many people call David Ellefson underated bassist, but to me, he is on my top 10 rock bass players and bass heroes🤘
Ellefson is pretty good better than 90% of metal bassists
Mr.Pastorius he is, but some prog and jazz metal bassists are insane
Rudy Ayoub even then he has more groove than most of them
@@RudyAyoub what are you doing here ?
Dave ellefson one of the greatest metal bassist ever
Dave Ellefson, Cliff Burton, Steve Harris, Geezer Butler and Frank Bello in no order are the top 5 metal bassists IMO
I m your fan, and a spend a lot of time to learn more your lessons, and i see you very strongly bass player and i now you can teach all bass rifs 😀😅😉😁😊
Everybody is chill until the triplet bit comes up.
I'd be interested in the verses too!
Thanks for the video!
Dave's tone is probably the best in metal IMO, but I can't do the pick. I'm a fingers guy. My only flaw in life 🙄
What kind of pickups are those? Do they do something special like Laces or Sustainiacs?
Sims super quads.
Mark! I didn’t know you are a Megadeth fan!?
Are you Jazz III'ing there?!? Also thanks for the alternating up/down starting points... I was wondering whether that was a tactic that I was overlooking, and your take on it has sealed it... I'm going back to basics to get that drilled.
What happened to the live streams?
CLIFF BURTON PLEASE
Great tutorial again. What pick type/thickness are you using for this song?
I’d love to see one done on Nikki Sixx possibly Primal scream or ten seconds to love or shout at the devil
The Unforgiven 3 by Metallica and Hysteria by Muse
Can you please do a vid about Geronimo by Flying Colors? It is a really awesome hybrid slap line by Dave LaRue.
Wow bass teachers are more considerate than regular electric teachers
I love your bass tone bro. Ibanez basses are awesome. I arranged this song with slap. I just wish I could have done it with the tone you have. Excellent instructional vid👍
I can't play with pick....n no extra time to learn pick so will try with fingers....don't know whether I will b able to do it or not
Great video, una pregunta q tipo de bajo tienes, y si esos microfonos son integrados o el bajo es asi, q modelo de ibanez es ese q tocas, gracias, keep it up, bro
Hi Mark!! Another great video lesson! What model of Ibanez is that in this video? SR300EB?
For the parts where Ellefson plays the zeros on the E string between the hammer-on, does he up-pick or down-pick from the 7?
The A5 -> A7 hammer on is with ring finger not pinky.
Any chance of learning Genetix by the stranglers??
Orion, Metallica.
jona _basspig the song that got me into playing bass. Well at least one of the big factors.
From Megadeath how bout we switch coasts and do some Anthrax, Crush.
I have a K5 ibanez anything for that extra string would be nice. ;)
What kind of bass do you have?
It's a modded Ibanez soundgear.
What brand bass are you playing? Ibanez?
absolutely noots
I use my fingers since I’m terrible with a pick
That whole bassline is just plain murder. It's like a "how to do everything on bass" masterclass.
Ellefson said this was the song he wrote the Bass rift 2 that encompasses everything he knows about bass playing at that point in time
You look like matt skeeba.
I thought you were going to use the fingers haha
Each video = more sun :-)
He is too cheer for metal player
ade badani Ha ha. Me or Dave? I'm 43 now so I'm a bit different to the long haired, miserable teenager I once was! Lol.

Yeah man. Good point well made.
Executed well but why does your tone sound so bad?
Very slow!
First❤
You're great man but your tone is the pits bruv, mushy & lacking mids.
Thank you very much.
