  • 10 year old whiskys. Not too young, not too old. Generally in the right price range. A good age for distilleries, desperately waiting, keen to recoup some of the large investment it (no doubt) took to get their product off the ground.
But...are they still a draw for the enthusiast? Well...let's take a look at one shall we?
    Enjoy.

Loved my time with that bottle. Shame we don't see it on shelves often, even in good whisky shops at times. Nice to hear you love it too Jim.

The Ben Nevis 10 era between 2017 to 2020 were the absolute best. The rebranded Ben Nevis 10 falls very short from the level of depth and breadth the previous incarnation had.

Thanks for the review. Ben Nevis has not been on my radar. I've seen some young (7 to 8 yr) independent bottles in a San Francisco shop for well north of $100. Too much for a 1st bottle from anywhere. I will be in Fort William next month though. I'll make it a point to give it a try at the distillery. Cheers.

I really enjoy this dram! I picked up a Glencadam 10 and this one in Edinburgh a year ago. I found myself going back to this one more than the other. Can't believe Ralphy 'panned' it! :(.

I believe that’s the new Ben Nevis label. I have two bottles of the older label, don’t know if the content changed. Ralfy recently reviewed a new label bottle and have a very low rate. What I can say from the bottles I have is that it’s a great powerful whisky.

In The Netherlands the Ben Nevis 10 appeared on the shelves this week. I was also afraid to buy one(my first) after Ralfy told us it was a mixer😂. This review gave me te courage to buy one. A boy expensive buy what a great whisky! ❤

Wish I could get the BN 10 in my part of the US. We had a tour scheduled at BN last July, and on our way there from the Islay ferry, we hit a pot hole on a rural single track and got a flat. Missed that tour, but did end up at Oban instead.

I was curious about trying this but then Ralfy gave it a bit of a stinker of a review a while back so it fell down the pecking order but it’s just climbed back up again. Cheers Jim

Hi Jim, for the record, this 10 yo expression dates from 1996, and it was indeed rebranded like this in 2021. I haven't tried this new version yet but heard good things about it...I alas don't have a lot left of my old one, I mean (especially after my crazy experiments in video for my N°72 home blend, recipe given away in a premiere in my channel) my 2018 release but I know it does contain older whiskies than 10 yo (as they didn't have a lot of stock for themselves, remember that 75 % of Ben Nevis goes to Japan for Nikka's blended brands, they use to add older casks), I even heard from a good source there was some subsequent 18 yo content in it, so i do recommend especially the releases from 2017-2018 if you can find a bottle (I'd like to replace mine too). Not sure it is true anymore with this new expression....Some feel it when they taste it, I haven't yet but if I do, I'll tell you my thoughts...Cheers !

It's sad path back to me but I bought my brother in law a bottle of Ben Nevis back in 2018. I had no idea what I was buying back then but he never opened it. Unfortunately he's recently been diagnosed with a neurological illness which requires him to keep off of alcohol so he gave the bottle back to me. Now that I know what it is, I will cherish it.

@@moelassus Sorry to hear that your brother in law has this issue...It is obvious that when you'll open it, you'll have a toast to him...He surely wants you to enjoy it, not to let it in the shelves for years....Sorry if my comment comes across too intrusive, I just felt I had to express it 🙏

The price for the OB Ben Nevis 10 yo imo horrible. In Denmark it's at the exact same level as the Springbank 10 yo with the 2022 Springbank price hike. I refuse to pay that (and that goes for both bottles), even if I'd love to taste this Ben Nevis.
I can still buy 7-8 yo Ben Nevis from the Signatory Vintage Un-chillfiltered Collection for 30% less that the standard retail price of the 10 yo OB (and I have a 10 yo Ben Nevis Signatory UCF Collection bottle in stock already).
I don't doubt for a second that it's good whisky. I just won't pay for it considering what I also can buy for the same money.
Oh sorry... just caught myself in the middle of (almost) starting a mini-rant on pricing 😬😄
Great review, Jim. I still really want to taste this one with your words in mind - but unfortunately your skills stop at making me willing to pay the price 😂
    Cheers buddy 🥃

Im surprised of prices. Aprox 4weeks ago i bought Springbank 10 for exactly £50 at online shop in UK Ben Nevis 10 right now costs £53+. Ben Nevis from Signatory Vintage cost £45 but its 8yo and has bad opinions at Whiskybase so this stop me to buy it. Also Ralfy's review of BN10 while ago turned my decision to get it down. Only good things i heard about McDonald's Traditional BN(peated). Did you try any of them or any of BN IB???

    • @bennyfriis601
      @bennyfriis601 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@peatbull3426 I guess that the UK prices of the indie bottlings and the official bottling are much closer to each other than here.
I just checked the SV bottle, I bought, and I paid 28% less for that compared to the official bottling, and it's rated (for what it's worth) quite well WB182756.
I agree, I too wouldn't buy a bottling that has poor reputation/rating, but I still wouldn't overpay to get the official bottling either. Then I'd just look for something else... I'll just look at the next entry on my (way too long) short list 😄😬
