Epic Backpacking in Japan! Ep. 9 Hakuba Sanzan (Three Peaks) Traverse, Hiking the Northern Alps

- Today takes us from Hakuba Oike Pond over to the Hakuba Yari Onsen Lodge hut and tenting area. What a ride! This was a crazy beautiful ridge traverse, up and down all day, while also having an incredible break at the largest mountain hut in Japan: Hakuba Sanso. The windows at their restaurant are worth stopping for a snack to relax and take in those gorgeous mountain views.
Thank you to the "trail angels" who shared their snacks the night before and then brought me hot coffee from the hut on that cold morning by the pond-- y'all are the best! And thanks to everyone watching and supporting this channel. It means so much to me.

Shirouma is a mountain I climbed when I was in my high school Wonder Vogel club.
I fondly remember the asymmetrical shape of the mountain and the white sandstone path.

Was my back yard for a long time. A health issue stopped me from doing the hike, but seeing it through your eyes was just great. The onsen building gets dismantled every winter, then rebuilt again. Stunning scenery. Well done.
What an incredible place to spend time in/around. I read that about the dismantling, I feel like that makes it even more special. They even closed a bit early this season due to some bridges getting washed out in the crazy rains, I just made it in time 🙏 thankful for sure

I've always wanted to go to that onsen but never made it. How was it?
It was awesome! I wish I had gone into the mixed gender open air bath to really experience that, so I’ll have to go back, but the water is so hot and perfect. The water rushing around the bath areas is also really cool. Definitely worth the hike up/down.
