  • The concept of division of fractions has the same meaning as division of whole numbers. This is illustrated by solving word problems and using Fraction Bars to show how many times one amount "fits into" another, that is, how many times greater one amount is than another. This approach helps to make sense when dividing one fraction by another. By listing examples of dividing by fractions, the "invert and multiply" rule can be discovered. From using the bars for visual illustrations of division, students will be able to see the results from the "invert and multiply" rule agree and make sense. An alternative to "invert and multiply" is obtaining common denominators before dividing two fractions, and it is noted that this was the common method of division in years passed. The video ends with a demonstration of the free interactive web game "Equations Game" from fractionbars.com.
