Glad you like this, JP. I love Saga, especially their stuff from '78 to '85 (my favorite and arguably their best period). Very underrated and fairly unknown in the states (outside of On the Loose). Always got overshadowed by Rush (both being from Canada and leaning progressive). I've always thought Saga was unfairly compared to Rush, though. Saga was different. They unabashedly used a lot of synths from the beginning, often with three of their five members playing on a track. But that was balanced or cut with Ian Crichton's great guitar work. Keep going down the rabbit hole with Saga. Humble Stance, Ice Nice, You're Not Alone, Mouse in a Maze, Careful Where You Step, Wind Him Up, Conversations (really, the whole Worlds Apart album), The Flyer, Cat Walk, Scratching The Surface, Goodbye Once Upon a Time... there's plenty to choose from.

How Long, Humble Stance, You're Not Alone, Images, Careful Where You Step, Wind Him Up, No Stranger, and The Interview are all good songs from those first 4 albums.
The low rating is because prog rock was out of fashion around the time Saga eas making this music. Their 4th album, which had On The Loose, was rated higher because it had some more accessible hits.

An perfect album opener, and one of Saga's best tracks ever. My only frustration, for the longest time, was that I didn't understand the story, and it didn't help that this was an alleged "Chapter two". The performance is so cinematic, I keep wondering what "the movie" was about

Became aware of this band from MTV and they had a live clip of this which was very impressive. So much so that not having even known anything about them I went out and bought the album. Glad you enjoyed it. It's infectious.

I had the same introduction to Saga (I had never heard of them) via MTV in the very first few weeks that MTV came on the air back in the early 80's. After seeing that video and hearing the song I was a Saga fan from then on.

Same here, MTV introduced me and some friends to this band. As fate would have it, they actually played at my university around the time Behaviour came out, in the middle of nowhere Missouri. We couldn't believe it, and I'm sure we were the only ones there who knew all of the songs they played!

OMG I'm so glad you finally gave Saga another chance with this song I suggested a couple times! I've been following you for long enough to know you would love it. If you feel like exploring more of their materiel, I would suggest Ice Nice or The Pitchman next

I saw them live in Bremen in 1983. The concert was so loud and crystal clear that after 10 seconds my eardrums collapsed. I watched the rest of the concert half deaf - at least the volume was ok then. My ears were deaf and ringing for days afterwards. Technically it was one of the best concerts I've seen. This is one of the most precise playing band I know. Steve Negus is a human clockwork.
Tip to listen to: “Tired World” from their first album.

Afternoon, Justin. Dave from sunny London (but of course your channel is Brighter Than Sunshine!). Thanks for playing this terrific song - definitely my favourite from Saga, and maybe one of my all-time fave prog songs. The keyboard line throughout is hypnotically brilliant, but I also just love Ian Crichton's guitar work, especially the interplay with the keys. For more of that, check out the instrumental Conversations from the Worlds Apart album.
P.S. my song ref Brighter Than Sunshine is by Aqualung.

JP, the Chapter songs (16 in total) tell a fantastical sci-fi story when played in order.
They released a live double album, "The Chapters Live", where they play them in order.
My absolute favorite song by Saga is "No Regrets - Chapter 5". It's such a hauntingly beautiful song. I had a cassette mix tape with that track as the last one and used to use it to get to sleep.

Great reaction JP! Lots of cool Saga songs to get to. "Careful Where You Step" off this one will make you happy, I think. They are still going strong and Michael Sadler on vocals sounds great live, and he's 69!

Nice deep dive into an obscure track. One of my favorites. Ice Nice is another favorite of mine. 1980 these guys were way ahead of their time. There are still alot of people who are not aware of the quality of this band

If you like this, you'll probably like the rest of the album. I've been a fan of the band since about 1982 and the Silent Knight album ( their 3rd album) is my favorite. Their first 4 albums sound a lot like this. There are many more great tracks on those albums. I like their later stuff too, but the early albums from 1978-1981 are the best. Some of my favorites are, Humble Stance, Ice Nice, It's Time, Help Me Out, Careful Where You Step, Wind Him Up and No Stranger. They are worthy of taking a deeper look. They have exceptional skills in songwriting and technical ability. They have over 20 albums and they're a great live band. I cant say enough about their greatness.

Love Saga. They always had something special in the prog area. Check "In transit", their first live album.

  • @daxtear

So! Saga! One of my favorite bands and this track is one of their best. They get mixed reception because they're too poppy for the hardcore prog heads and too weird for the radio. The first 3 albums are pretty great throughout, you have already sampled the 4th which strips the complexities down a bit, before they almost completely leave for the rest of the 80s and most of the 90s. They get good again at Full Circle (imo) and mostly stay there for the rest of their career.
For some more sample tracks if you don't want to do an album, go for Humble Stance, Tired World [Chapter 6], You're Not Alone, Careful Where You Step and maybe Ashes To Ashes [Chapter 11] if you wanna sample something newer. If you DO want to do an album, the one you just started or the self titled debut are excellent choices to start.
Glad you had fun with this one, it really is magical when it hits. Ian Crichton is possibly my favorite guitarrist. Such a unique style.

Always great to see and hear SAGA content pop up somewhere, and especially on _this_ jolly fella's channel!
    😊👍
What blows me away about this song (apart from being amaaazing) is the fact that Jim 'Happy' Gilmour actually _plays_ those synth arpeggios - AND with his _left_ hand - AND he is right-handed! 🤯😅
Jim Crichton plays synth bass throughout the first two thirds of the song and switches to bass guitar for the faster ending, during which also lead vocalist Michael Sadler plays keyboards 🙂
Drummer Steve Negus is left-handed and would've played those 16th hi-hats notes on the opposite side to how young Justin demonstrated it 😊
Those first 8 'Chapters' had not appeared in numerical order across the first 4 albums either, by the way 😅
PS: SAGA song suggestion: 'Scratching The Surface', with Jim Gilmour on lead vocals.
[the 5.16 long album version on the SAGA channel, please!]

Many albums with many incredible songs to be heard from Saga. They are still writing and recording and touring, although their main fan base has them touring in Europe. A couple of band members have changed. A large percentage of their fans are also fans of Rush.
Personal favorite songs include Conversations, Night To Remember, The Runaway, and Trust. There are many more.

On the Loose is not my favorite song of them either but it has the credit to have revealed them to a larger fan base via MTV. The 8 Chapter songs on he first albums are very often the longer ones, adding some prog parts to their poppish songs. There is a live version from way later on. Get it. Enjoy :) Or come to Germany, where they surprisingly they got there biggest, strongest and unwavering fanbase to see them live.

One of those songs that impressed me when it was new. Back in 1980, the Progressive scene was waning, and the new groups were synth pop/rock like The Korgis and Ultravox. Really like the sound, and the album cover's use of the Einstein Observatory.

  • @richardkarbowski5224

Their first 5 albums are all great in my opinion, and most of their others are pretty decent. They are still together in some form still. Michael Sadler has a great and distinctive voice, and Ian Crichton is a criminally under-rated guitar player. Chapters 1-8 are spread out on their first 4 albums, and then they continued the story (chapters 9-16) in the 90s/2000's over 3 albums. If you listen to them in order it tells a pretty bizarre story involving aliens and Einstein's brain...

Great reaction. Saga's first four albums are all great. The first three are pretty similar in style and this song is good representative of the style. They change it up a bit on the fourth album where "On The Loose" is from. "On The Loose" became somewhat of a hit for the band which prompted them to move in a more commercial direction and for most "original" fans the first four, in fact the first three even, are the essential Saga albums. I personally don't care much for any Saga albums after their live album "In Transit" which was released after their fourth album.

Cool -- more Saga. They were such an interesting band, sort of a proggier version of Styx (but with way better musicianship). Sadly they never connected with an audience in the states (probably a bit too late for the proggy pop they were peddling), but found fame and fortune in Germany and Puerto Rico, of all places. They were still active until recently, although I think singer Michael Sadler has finally retired. Re: other songs to check out, most of the 'Chapters' are all strong, plus I'd recommend "The Perfectionist", "Ice Nice", "Humble Stance", "Wind Him Up", and "Conversations" (one their few instrumentals), all from the first four albums which is sort of their 'classic period'.

Always thought of Saga as a pomp rock band though that might be because I tend to get Saga and Styx mixed up in my mind. Was always aware of both bands but never really taken by what I had heard from them. I see that this is from 1980 which makes it proto-neo-prog (hey! I just invented a new genre!) in its sound. Leaving aside my prejudices and expectations, it's a quite good arty pop song with some nice flourishes. I would have like to hear this on the radio but wouldn't have bought it if I had.

I don't dislike that song, but I can't say I really like it either. From Saga, I prefer their 1979 album Images at Twilight, 1983's Heads or Tales and above all their 1995 concept album Generation 13, which isn't too popular with Saga fans or music critics (probably due to its darker, colder musical and lyrical content). The latter is an album to be listened to in one go, as most of its tracks are short and follow on from one another. To get an idea, you could try the track 'The Learning Tree', which is not directly linked to either the previous or the following track.
