@@LegendLength that water flow is not enough to really power much and he would still either need to use a belt (Rope) or make a gear system .kick pottery wheels have been around for ages and are pretty simple i.e. th-cam.com/video/BvciVXijupc/w-d-xo.html

Along with Primitive Technology, this guy's channel is my favorite because he actually does things that are useful for survival rather than just building stuff like swimming pools and underground house.

Oh ibsaw what you were specifically talking about! Okay so what I found researching is 2 possible explanations. 1) he already acquired it and put it in places to give us the satisfaction of watching go get it again lol or 2) flood waters. Where like large deposits of clay settled with the gravel and when it started to dry it gobbed up. The it rained again and it washed the outer layers off along with the gravel down the gobs until they are little mounds 🤷🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️ I'm spit ballin

Would need a very large wheel or very fast flowing water , easier just to make a kick wheel. Wrap the outside of the wheel he got now with bamboo tubes full of sand (for inertial weight), mount low, spindle going up to smaller work platter. Too much to explain here, just found a vid which shows it clearly

(i've got a slightly idea about what it is searching for "kick wheel pottery", but still would like to see one with primitive tools) ;)
Actually, the 3-toed sloth can make a decent kick wheel for pottery. It just takes him 20 years to do it....

If they crack it's probably because they dry too fast so cover them with wet leaves, maybe. Google it if it's a problem! :D
We had this potter's wheel thing in school (a LONG time ago!) with the weight at the bottom and you used your foot to turn the whole thing. That way you can use the hands all the time.

I believe it's actually because it COOLS down to quickly. You are supposed to leave it in the warm ashes if you heat it in the fire until it's no longer a
wet (and hot?).

Every time i watch these videos i wander two things:
a) What does he do inbetween videos, does he have a real home or what?
b) How does he make these. Does he dit them himself? Is there an editor person?
I really pokes my curiosity to understand this guy( and others like him on YT) better.
Yeah I saw someone commenting on his basic clothes the other day. However he always wears the same when filming. You can hear signs of a village just over the hill to the left where he probably does his video editing. Maybe though his family has this plot and he lives in a city. Listen and you can hear the cockerels & chicken most times. To have digital cameras and editing facilities... this is a show. It is none the less a good show. Not you, but it's strange how people can watch a zombie show on TV but think this is real life. It is an act but a good one, demonstrating a lifestyle that may not last very long.

It seems like a bit of a struggle trying to switch between spinning the wheel and shaping the pot with the current setup. It might make it easier keeping the wheel spinning if he raised the first wheel to desk height, and stuck a second, identical wheel at foot height. This should allow the pottery wheel to be entirely foot-powered--just kick it along with your foot at the speed you want it at.
(I think I've seen some traditional pottery studios doing this, however I can't remember if they made the upper wheel thinner than the lower kicking wheel, or if they made both wheels equally thick for maximum momentum. I have no experience with pottery. :p)

Your table would spin longer if you would lubricate it. Very finely powdered charcoal might work reasonably well: it's still used today to lubricate watches.

Graphite, used to dry lubricate gear systems like watches, is a different form of carbon than what this gentleman would get from a fire. Carbon in the form of sooty ash is abrasive; we used to use it or cigarette ash to polish out scratches in aircraft canopies.
Even if they were the same, he burned the hole for the wheel shaft to go through the log, leaving behind carbon in the hole.

What an amazing place to live. Warm weather, humidity, forests, nearby creek, bamboo everywhere, hills made of presumably limestone, pure clay deposits within hand's reach. That place is truly a paradise, what a treasure.

Why not hammer a small (free spinning?) vertical peg into a second hole on the wheel, so you can get some leverage for further spinning when you are in the middle of throwing a pot and don't want to go back to the big stick? Good work as usual. Love following your progress. :)

There's not a chance he used the tiny axe to cut that whole section. The cut marks are too big.

@@maitre6360 No, if it were a chainsaw we would be able to tell from the cute marks. An axe was used to cut both sides.
@@frinnahful the cut was too clean to be nothing but an ax. He stopped videotaping after he cut through the bark and then he had a perfectly uniform circle of wood. There is no way he used a primitive tool to cut that piece all the way through.

any interest in converting the wood wheel to a thinner clay plate to reduce weight?
The plate is heavy so that it continues to spin. It must maintain angular momentum as you add clay and work it.
I made a turntable, from a fan, so that it doesn't rotate easily,

You should try to make a second plate under the first so you can use your foot to turn the wheel. Makes things so much faster if you don't have to use one hand (or both) to spin the wheel up every few seconds
