- This is an early Fleischer cartoon from 1930 starring Bimbo and featuring the character who would soon become Betty Boop.
====================
Note that I am now moderating the comments because of some bad apples
"I'm all lit up like a Christmas tree",
"I fight & swear & drink & smoke",
"I never can get drunk enough",
"for Whiskey is the life of man",
And to think cartoons nowadays won't even show someone smoking a cigarette.
Man, I miss old cartoons.
Its weird that Betty started out life as a dog!.
Some of you say the animators were on drugs, others call this adult swim of '20's. But do you know that the censorship code wasn't written until 1934? That's why the early Betty Boops seem risque, even for the period.
"I'll spin you yarns and tell you lies
I'll drink your wine and eat your pies
I'll kiss your cheeks and black your eyes"
No one knew how to end a cartoon like the Fleischers.
This is fun to watch back to back with Popeye's 'Beware of Barnacle Bill' cartoon. The Fleischer's were just amazing!
Like most cartoon characters at that time, Betty was a work in progress. It took Grim Natwick to really get her to where she looked a year or so after this cartoon was made. I think that this was only the second cartoon that Betty appeared in.
no Nancy Lee is a generic name for a sailors girlfriend or "the girl back home". some others are Sally Brown, Eliza Lee, Kitty/Katie O' Toole and more vulgar names like Sally Swallows, Rose/Rosie Bottoms or Mae Roxabedde (Rocks a bed). Thats also for if they dont' want to give their name out to the crew for fear of another sailor trying to steal her or the name of the girl they're going to find in port. some may just use to O.A.O. or the one and only.
One creepy toon. Changes timbre and style every 30 seconds. Like a fever dream.
I love watching these early 30s Fleischer cartoons. I really love the bit where the lightning bolt punches Bimbo's Captain.
I hadn't seen Barnacle Bill for over twenty five years, not a bad copy, thanks for posting this classic on TH-cam!
Damn right,
This was for adults,
Not all animation is Disney pablum for kids,
And so what if it's weird?
Some of the best animation ever done ala the Fleischers, Tex Avery, etc
is not what you would call conventional.
This is my 1st time seeing her as of how she was 1st created, thanx for posting!!
These were early incarnations of the characters that would later become Betty Boop and Bimbo. Still very cool cartoon.
I watch this it make me young again and smile from ear to ear such joy so innocent.
my grandfather used to sing this song to me when i was little--sort of a "call and response" deal.
Angriest captain I've ever seen. His delirious fury at the end of the film totally makes it. Also, holy man-swallowing bedroom, Batman!
Of course, Fleischer used the song again in his 1935 Popeye opus, "Beware Of Barnacle Bill", with Bluto posing as "Bill".
This cartoon predates Betty only slightly but everything that would become Betty was present in this character, including the same voice actress. The only real difference was she was drawn as a dog here. How can you look at the body, the way she's dressed, the hair, the big eyes, and then hear that distinctive voice and think it could be anyone other than Betty?
It was a common thing during the 20s and early 30s to have human like animals. Such characters still existed after that period but by the late 30s human characters were becoming common place in cartoons.
@NymphadoraBeeWolf Cont
She still had dog ears at this point although they were shrinking.
The first Fleischer toon that had her as a 100% human was 'Mask-a-Raid' (1931)
her dog ears had become ear rings by this time.
Thanks for this.......didn't know Betty Boop did this song before Popeye and Bluto.........great surreal stuff......the doors...sofa and Bimbo diving into it...the cat gossips.....and they were only playing draughts :) reminds me of Roger Rabbit with them playing pattercake pattercake...
You tube is the best to see early cartoons....now if the computer turned into a telly.I can see this happen with You tube.......anyway thanks again laughland
holy shit the cartoon artists back then did a lot of acid
This seems like something I'd find on Newgrounds, except without the memes.
0:48 Mickey Mouse :D
Ill kiss your cheek and black your eye anyone else hear him sing that as he was going up the stairs good god lol
@NymphadoraBeeWolf She started getting more human features in the Fleischer toon 'Mysterious Mose' (1930) And I think either 'Bimbo's Initiation' or 'Silly Scandals' whichever came out first) (1931) was the first BB toon with something close to the recognizable Betty Boop head with no trace of dog features although she still had massive dog ears.
I believe 'Bimbo's Express' (1930) was the first one with the 100% traditional Betty Boop head as we know it,
all cartoons from that era were a trip. they all had adult themes and shit. a lot of them had racial shit too
barnacle bill sounds... pleasant, doesn't he? XD
Bimbo s dance at 3:38 is cute
Aww, they cleaned up the lyrics for this one too!
How can he talk about never getting drunk enough? Times have surely changed!
barnacle ftw
Why'd the clock pull down her dress?
2:04 he gave him the bird :D
I really don't think it's Mickey,
'Steamboat Willie' the first Mickey Mouse cartoon came out in 1928, It wouldn't suprise me however if the Fleischer Brothers and some other studios who used similar looking mice used Mickey as a source.
Well there are a few Barnacle Bill videos on TH-cam that use some of those "alternative" lyrics, I take alot of stuff from Wikipedia with a grain of salt, But I have heard that bit about how the Barnacle Bill The Sailor song was originally called
'Bollocky Bill The Sailor' which makes sense if those original lyrics listed on Wikipedia
are the real thing.
a tom and jerry and betty boop cartoon 1931
this is one of my favorites
GOD she looks so scary in this
" HA HA! " cute :)
Exclusive Uploads talk about Rare stuff, nice...
At about 2:03 does Barnacle Bill stick his two fingers up before leaving the boat? I love those little details in these old cartoons.
Oh boy, do I know the dirty lines to this song! "Never no more, you dirty old w.....!" It's really salty, you know?
That's BETTY BOOP?!!!!
4;47 Grim Natwick animation.
Why was he uncredited in this one?
Bimbo is so cute
i like this its great love it
This was a very interesting cartoon. Betty Boop looks retarded, but what the heck... it was worth watching! (the boat with legs cracked me up)
I can see why they evolved her.
What's the sound effect from 4:55 to 4:59? How did they make that sound?
great animation
If memory serves me right, Didn't they also also do a Barnacle Bill with Popeye and Pluto.
at 1:40 as well
awesome!
this song rulezz
So what did we learn today, kiddies?
@RedWOLF4Life96 these cartoons were not kid friendly to begin with, these cartoons are kinda like history....idk how to explain it look at bucketfurter comment he explains why this isnt intended as a kid friendly cartoon
cute
@MyGodzilla99 Oh I thought Uncle Walt's biggest pact was with J. Edgar Hoover in the 1950s (someone who wasn't all that far from Satan IMO.)
and Bimbo's face when he says "oh yeah?" at 1:26 is so cute
Like most cartoon studios, they only listed a couple of the key animators, and they probably rotated the names as they were listed from one cartoon to the next. At least Max Fleischer gave credit to some of his artists. Walt Disney's name is the only one that appears in HIS cartoons...
Isn't that Betty singing backup at the end when they do a little of "Minnie the Mermaid"?
I can't figure out why Fleischer cartoon characters just muttered random bits of dialogue instead of speaking normally. And the villains always just said "RRrrrarrrgrr" no matter what they were doing at the time.
@sshuck
"He is Barnacle Bil the Sailor!" 8D
.....god betty is just...UGH in these ones...
I don't like Bimbo here. I prefer him in Bimbo's Initiation or in Swing You Sinners. :(
barnickel bill the sailor is a player!! B-)
Great vid, but the words are certinly not the ones I learned back in the 60's (decidedly 'X' rated) to Barnacle Bill, soem of the wordd are the same.
A slapper/tart/ fools people around, very flirtashious
lmao betty boops dance at 3:52 XD
@wjsprsn It might mean: The Hays Office wasn't censoring everything, cartoons shown in theaters weren't aimed at children, and in general weren't designed to placate people like the square hausfrau who are shown pointing and gossipping around the clotheslines. Interesting that the guy extolling the virtues of whiskey with a girl in every port is the good guy, and the judgmental prudes (and the boss) are the butt of jokes. Not the corporate American Way of the New Millenium, that's fopr sure.
Wait a sec???? The black book said he was visitng Nancy Lee??? Isn't that Boop???
@31operafan
Well, it wasn't a Disney cartoon and I'm not sure what people would have expected of Disney in 1930. Those early Mickey cartoons were pretty surreal. I'm sure to a lot of people cartoons all blurred into one crazy medium.
I like only a little cat who was sitting near the sofa
dovile, rask mane
Man she's got a rack on her. Eat yer pie?! Beezar. Thanx
I'm Barnacle Bill, the sai-lor!
1930 I believe.

Can Someone tell me why they pulled Macrh of the wooden souldiers? Violation of yerms of use????
Yeah if that's his middle finger I see what you mean.
Its Betty's Voice X)
Man those people who did the cartoon were so on drugs!!
@FaniKoira Its her Voice and looks like her
hahhaha,they were just playing dames.
XD HA-HAA!!!
@whywecantunite That's Bimbo's foot not his genitalia :P
I dont like betty in this^^
But the mermaids are very cute
Yeah, and it was more toned down, but I liked it a little more than this one.
日本語タイトルは「脱線水兵エロ行脚」ww
Hahaha betty boop funny
This is not kid friendly on so many levels...the lyrics are just one of the many things wrong here haha
is that supposed to be a mimic of mickey mouse at the beginning?
Mickey Mouse is on the cartoon too.
whats a flapper?
Dirty Bill! he ain't clean
