That was such an incredible story about the Nintendo directs wow! Such a cool past of Nintendo history most people don’t know and I didn’t know you guys were that involved to the point where kit was trying to set it up with barely any support! Thanks for the cool story time, I look forward to these every week!

It's crazy to think just how huge of an impact Kit has indirectly had on the entire video game industry worldwide through his work helping to establish Nintendo Directs! Truly a career accomplishment to take great pride in.

My favorite direct (besides the Robot Chicken E3) is the one with Iwata announcing the google street view app on the Wii U, and he put a little snorkel on for the underwater view and said something like ‘It’s like you’re really under the sea!’ So adorable

I don't specifically remember the very first direct I watched, but I have vivid memories of being younger and checking the eshop for new videos to watch and then watching the directs on the 3ds eshop. Those directs helped me discover new franchises to try that I still play today!😁

Man, you guys really worked hard and sacrificed a lot for Nintendo, it's super difficult to find employees like the ones you were, and they wouldn't have gotten it done if you weren't there. You were absolutely vital to make Nintendo what it is today. All that work is as important to the company's success as the products themselves. So thanks a lot for all that work cause thanks to you I got to have lots of fun and have awesome memories of those good times!! Cheers to continued awesomeness!

AI or not, they’re spitting facts. It seems like they both had very direct hands in a lot of the big projects of Nintendo that won back an audience and made their higher ups more personable and closer to their fan base than ever. A very wholesome time ❤

So I checked: the first Direct (October 2011) has 225k views, and the next from February 2012 has 406k views. To put this in perspective, your biggest episode with Geoff Keighley has 634k views. Look at you now!

Iwata was such a visionary… the way he pushed this Direct idea so early on while no big companies were really using that and even less in the video game space. I remember people kinda “shaming” the direct format when it replaced the live showcase just for now to be the standard for many companies. Another trail Nintendo made and so early compared to when others adopted the formula (and still can’t replicate)

I have fond memories of some of those first ones as those were the days the young high school me truly got into gaming. I absolutely love the stories of what it was like working at Nintendo for you guys. It’s easy to see Nintendo as just a big corporation of androids, but hearing about and seeing what actually goes on day to day really humanizes the company for me. It’s a bunch of awesome people working toward bringing some excitement and joy to the world.

Hey there! I just finished watching this video and it reminded me of how much I loved the Nintendo Directs. I can imagine how tough and exhausting it was for you to work on them, but I want you to know that those moments were some of the happiest times in my life. I would count down the days until a new Direct was announced and would watch it with pure excitement on my Wii or Wii U I forget. I still have that same level of enthusiasm for everything Nintendo creates. I just wanted to take a moment to say thank you for all of your hard work and dedication. Great story about the origin of the Nintendo Direct! From Kit recruiting people to looking for support for gathering the team for the presentation, that was something you can feel great about aftwtr the hardwork. For someone special like Reggie and Mr. Iwata, i can see why you dont wanna let them down. They meant a lot to us for their time at Nintendo and who they are. You both made ttour mark for sure, even if it is tough at times.

In regards to Final Fantasy X...yes, it absolutely holds up! It remains my favorite single player Final Fantasy game and I've replayed it dozens of times at this point. The game is more linear than other FF's, but for good reason in that it lends well to the storytelling. The story, soundtrack, and battle system all are incredible! Please play it!
Also...note I said "single player Final Fantasy". Final Fantasy XIV may be an MMO, but the story in it blew me away...especially in the Shadowbringers and Endwalker expansions. I'd love to see you both journey through it together!

Absolutely recommend FFX, i played it for the first time last year while binging my way through the FF series for the first time (1-13 + 16 so far), and X was easily my favourite. One of the greatest RPGs ever made with an incredible story
The sequel, X-2 is also pretty unique, though you have to go in with the right expectations as it's VERY different to the original game, especially in tone (much more campy and lighthearted)

Final Fantasy X definitely holds up!! It can be a bit grindy in the back half with some tough boss battles, but the game has built-in assists to help you get past that if you get stuck. Either way I think the story carries it. The cutscenes are a joy to watch and you'll be so carried away that it'll more than make up for some of the mechanics feeling a little dated. Game's a real traysure, no doubt.

I personally think that FFX holds up. The graphics aren't as groundbreaking as they were in 2001, (the remaster didn't really fix this despite improving textures.) but the story and characters are still good. It's my favorite in the series, but I have some bias as it was my first. If you like traditional turn based games like Persona 5, then you should feel right at home with the battle system. The game can be a bit linear for a while, but the story beats and constantly changing scenery keep things interesting. Hopefully you will have time to give it a try in the future :)

Loved this week's pod a lot! The storytime was fascinating and it was great to hear additional perspectives of the Final Fantasy series, you can really tell a lot about a person by their favs and least favs! My bottom 3 are: FF2, FF3, and FF8, whereas my favorites are: 1) FF6 2) FF15 and 3) FF9.
If I could make a recommendation on a really well-made video game documentary, please watch Earthbound, USA for a great perspective on the Earthbound/Mother community and a ton of historical context on both the game and the community! It features a few old Nintendo employees perspectives as well that you both might find particularly fascinating! Mother - and 3 specifically - is not a meme, and the market is actually ready poised to make it a success. The first two Earthbound games were some of Virtual Console 3DS and Wii U's biggest success stories, and Earthbound-inspired indie RPGs are million sellers even to this day. One of the biggest indie success stories ever is Undertale, whose Earthbound and particularly Mother 3 influence is worn on its sleeve. A Mother 3 Remake can succeed if Nintendo was willing to put the effort into it!

THANK YOU for mentioning how weird and sloppy it was that the Splatoon DLC was the same day as the other direct. I had no idea the DLC came out for their big game! And I was shocked nintendo didn't tweet or mention anything about it until I think much later in the evening? Others said it wasn't a big deal, just remember the tweet from weeks ago?? Well I'm glad you guys thought that was weird too and not just me. (:

FFXIII was the only FF game I played thru to the end. My FF experience before that was FFXIII on DS & both FF Tactics on PSP & GBA. I thoroughly enjoyed the game & went on to play/beat FFXIII-2 as well. I never finished FFXIII: Lightning Returns tho, as I got really into another game when it came out. I've been hoping for that to be remade so I can finally finish it but with ppl hating on the games so much, I doubt it will ever happen 😑
Kit, you mentioned your 1st RPG experience being FFIV & it reminded me about my own. My 1st RPG exp was Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade & FE: The Sacred Stones on GBA. The newer games are great but so far none of them have hit that same feel as those games. The changes made in FE: Engage made it come very close & I'm enjoying the gameplay (I just started it a few weeks ago). It certainly is a return to form compared to the more recent titles but it still feels lacking in other ways. I'm hoping the next game will get it right

Kit: for Final Fantasy X, the HD versions are worth playing. I had struggles when I played it on the ps2 20 years ago. But I'm a little more adaptable to the linear gameplay now. And the graphics just feel better to play with the HD versions. But be aware, the first 5 hours are the worst. It's a little too slow, and you have to get past the required blitzball game. But once you're getting past the tutorials and the opening acts it's a pretty solid game.

i used to agree with krysta about but then i realized that the more time passes, the more people will come into contact with ff7 WITHOUT knowing the spoiler! and since these remakes are so big in the industry and so many more people are looking at it without playing the original than ever, it's just nice to give people a chance to experience something like that. i never got to experience ff7 without knowing the spoiler (i literally learned it like 17 years ago), but i really wish i could have. it's profound and exciting and i still don't think other games have been able to really match it to that degree

1:11:23 Oh Krsyta. With all due respect, sometime you do genuinely blurt out the spoiler. We all know you don't mean it, but you do say it. And I'm not talking about the FF7 Aerith death moment. Sometimes a spoiler really is just a spoiler. My rule for spoilers has always been, if it was shown in the trailers, it's free game. If it wasn't shown in the retailers, we stay quiet about it.
Again, not talking about FF7 specifically but just spoilers in general.

  • @vengefulmagus
    @vengefulmagus 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

I remember that 2012 Direct presentation for North America was pretty disappointing. It was the lightest on content since many games either weren't confirmed for localization or simply weren't getting one. Japan had so many games so show, including more on the new Fire Emblem 3DS and updates on so many more games. Even Europe was getting games that we weren't at the time like Fatal Frame 2 remake and Pandora's Tower (at least we did get the latter later on).
It's weird to think about now because in my online community there was already tons of hype for Nintendo Directs, even if it was like only the third one Japan did. I definitely learned from that early on that people should hype more responsibly and temper their expectations. I really enjoyed the Japanese presentation because I knew it would be updates on upcoming games. But it would've been nice if they had let all regions prepare better and maybe even coordinate some of the games they knew would come over, especially on 3DS which needed every push it could get at the time.
Anyways, thank you for sharing this story since I love hearing how things went behind the scenes! It's so interesting how NoA staff internally still didn't even know what this was.

I think Iwata said something about sharing Nintendo news "directly" to its customers without having to rely on western gaming press/media since most of them have strong PlayStation/XBOX bias. For years, Nintendo has been looked down, ridiculed and even set aside for being not hardcore enough and Iwata wanted to change that by introducing Nintendo Direct.

The Direct story is so interesting, I'd love to hear more. It's the kind of thing that you take for granted as something that "just exists" until you stop and think about all the work that happens behind the scenes.
I disagree with your take on remaking Mother 3 though. Sure, western fans are a vocal minority - of course, because the game doesn't even exist in the west - but the real audience are the people who aren't fans *yet*. The majority. It's not just a meme, it's a genuinely fantastic game.

I really didn’t like characters outside the main party not gaining XP and leveling up in some RPGs. The biggest offender for me is Breath of Fire 2. There are sections of the game where you need a specific character to progress. One such instance was a battle where you could only use Rand. I hardly had him in the party so he was severely under leveled. I had to grind a lot to get him to a point to win the battle. It annoyed me so much. On a different note, I tried Elden Ring. I found a chest I wanted, but I kept dying. I finally got the chest, but it teleported me to completely different part of the map. As soon as I started moving, I was killed. I stopped playing after that.

FF VI, X, and XII are the top 3 (and I'm not just saying this because Famitsu had those three too). VII is mid. People have rose tinted glasses for VII because it was the first one for a lot of people and they were wowed by the pretty cut scenes, but didn't realize all VII added were annoying mini-games. In an attempt for realism the artistic flair that VI and previous games had were lost with VII from the way the monsters were drawn to how bosses died.

I’m surprised you haven’t played FFXV! I just assumed any game with a hot buff shirtless guy Krysta would have played 😅

I'm bummed Kit has flipped on FF XVI. I know a lot of people hate on the game, but I think it's a masterpiece! I love the story, the characters, the epic boss fights, the graphics and art, and the MUSIC (so many legendary tracks). That is probably my third favorite behind VII and X.
The pixel remasters have been a ton of fun, too. I've played through 1 - IV and working on V now. The quality of life additions have been very nice!

This was one of the best Storytimes you've ever done! I loved it! Also, I agree that Final Fantasy VIII is a disappointment, and XVI was a big letdown too, at least narratively. But thanks for reading my message! (John here)

I really don’t understand you guys, how you said Mother3 is just a Meme??? Just because you never want to play it or have no interest?? Then you mention the sales, but we are getting a new Endless Ocean, how many copies can that game sell?!?!? Some time I think that working for gaming companies makes you always thinking like corporate and not like fans or people that really enjoy gaming like you did as a kid or as before enter to the gaming job space.

I mean, that's entire point of the podcast, their biggest asset as content creators is that they, better than *anyone* out there, can give us a proper inside Nintendo corporate take on anything. If we wanted common gamers take we'd go our and listen/watch to any other gaming podcast.
And the Mother 3 outcry *is* a meme at this point. Marke value for this game outside Japan is truly minimal. It is very, very likely Nintendo sees no real monetary value on this.

      @alexisxg 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

Talking about the time at Corporate doesn’t mean they need to continue with that mentality. I mean look at Krista they literally laugh at fans not receiving a game because she like to continue laughing at the “meme” and being fan of K&K doesn’t make the need to agree with them in all.

@@alexisxg Hey I like laughing at the meme too, seeing a small part of the internet go into a tizzy every time Mother 3 is mentioned is nothing short of comical 😂
I get you somehow feel personally victimized by these two not thinking this is a rather important issue, but it seriously is not that big of a deal. And hey, I'm not corporate ;)

Regarding if 10 holds up, in my opinion, no. I played 10 like 2 years ago for the first time. The combat is the most rock paper scissors of any rpg I’ve ever played. If there’s not a boss fight it’s very repetitive. Most of the game is hallways. The story just doesn’t hit, for me at least. The romance is the core of the story and to me I just don’t buy how quickly they fall for each other. Tidus is far to willing to help some chick he just laid eyes on, to be believable.
